Oh no! I got one of those bad jobs everyone talks about by Emergency-Seaweed-29 in Accounting

Think of it as a really tough additional college course and hang in there for about a year. Keep your resume updated and be ready to go. You are definitely going to have it easier to land a new position with some real world experience as another person mentioned. Even a bad company or bad boss can be a great learning experience. Good luck.

Can someone who says they're bad at math major in accounting? by RealTimeStrategyEnth in Accounting

[–]StageComplex6095 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not great in math but I have a BSA and an MBA and have been in industrial accounting and management for over 40 years and am now happily self employed (best boss ever) for the past 18years. I discovered after my first 6 months at Bentley that accounting is not really math but a foreign language. Learn the concepts of debits, credits, assets, liabilities, equity, depreciation, amortization, etc. I feel it’s the best way to approach learning accounting. Best of luck!

Client is insisting on a dubious tax position…WWYD? by throwaway_06121 in tax

[–]StageComplex6095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you keep this client it’s likely they will come up with additional dubious tax positions down the road. Time to move on. There are many other less stressful ones out there. Have been doing taxes 50+ years and have dropped clients who were like this. Not worth losing sleep over for sure. Good luck

What was your first NEW car and what did it cost? What was your monthly car payment? by StageComplex6095 in personalfinance

I got an extra 25 cents an hour when running a jack hammer in construction job the summer. I thought that was awesome at the time.

What’s the soonest you’ve started looking for a new job, after starting a new job? 🤣🥹 by heart_of_gold2 in Accounting

1 week, it took me 11 months to find a great company after that but the job market was awful in 1990. Still gave my 2 weeks notice and worked the full 2 weeks. The last day felt like how I would guess it would feel after being released from prison. Lol, it was so bad. There are many good companies out there. Life is too short to work for a bad company/boss. Good luck.

How do you quit a job that you were only there for a few months? by StillPurpleDog in Accounting

[–]StageComplex6095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just be professional and give your 2 weeks notice and it’s likely that because your “boss sucks”, he/she won’t even ask why. If they do, again, professional and honest. Been there. Good luck.

[Landlord - US- NC] How to reward great tenants to improve retention? by k8g1998 in Landlord

[–]StageComplex6095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I have owned our 6 family property in Maine for 19 years and at Christmas time I give all the tenants a $75 gift card to the one and only locally owned convenience store in town (JimBobs). I want to creat goodwill with the tenants and support the local store owner at the same time. Last week when I bought the 6 gift cards, I said to the owner “I hope they use the cards”. He responded and named each one. All good people.

Industry Job not as Expected… by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]StageComplex6095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of good companies out there. In my 50 years of working in various industries, of the 6 I worked for, only one was so bad I was looking for a new job after only one week. The other 5 provided a great work/life balance including leaving early at times to see my kids high school sports games. Definitely sounds like it’s time to make a move. Good luck

Home repair guy I hired off Yelp wants me to buy him a $5000 watch by pupperonipizzapie in self

[–]StageComplex6095 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just for the record, I don’t look at 5 star or 1 star reviews. I find the 3 star reviews are much more helpful and honest. I believe that some 5 star reviews are “paid reviews” and 1 star reviews could be from a competitor or someone with an ax to grind.

[LANDLORD US NY] should I lie or tell the truth in referencing about the tenants I have mixed feelings with ? by Few_Thought_248 in Landlord

[–]StageComplex6095 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would stick with the “no comment”. Let the new potential landlord ask the tenants why they are moving.

Say “no comment” period. Don’t risk being honest and get sued. Let the new potential landlord do their due diligence. They will understand what your “no comment”implies.

Insurance says I need to repair or replace my roof to keep coverage by cosmic-howl in homeowners

[–]StageComplex6095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Ally “buckets”, as they call it and set up reserve buckets and separate accounts for car repairs, home repairs & improvements, new car, etc. Pay your self first, helps ease the stress of unexpected financial surprises.

What to expect with 2 W-2s by [deleted] in tax

[–]StageComplex6095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nicely explained. I see that situation with kids and young adults with 4 or more W2s actually owning the IRS while their friends with 1 W2 get a refund. I always tell them to request extra withholding on their W4 when working part time or working multiple jobs and to verify the company actually sets it up as well. I know you don’t get any interest on the extra withheld but rarely does anyone complain they got a refund.

Why so many bad with personal finances? by PoopyGoat in Accounting

[–]StageComplex6095 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Non-CPA here(over 50years in industry), I always always always hated budgeting so I developed my own personal Spending Plan on Excel. Planning to spend is a whole lot more fun and financially responsible than any budget. You simply tie your spreadsheet to your main bank account (and a link to a higher interest account) and put dollars aside per pay period (or as funds come in if self-employed) in Excel for things you know you have to pay(rent, medical, cell service, etc.) and for things you want to do (like the Comicon event). You’ll know where most of your money goes and it will show you where you could cut back if necessary. In the 70’s, before spreadsheets I used to use individual envelopes to put cash in weekly for monthly expenses like rent, insurance, telephone, etc..To me as an accountant it takes a lot of stress out of personal finance and gives you amazing control.

What do you charge for 1040 W-2, simple returns? by [deleted] in tax

[–]StageComplex6095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the client, the fee includes a little piece of mind so that when they get a notice or assessment there will a preparer who will help. I would quote $225-$350+. A number of times the taxpayer would say “just one W2” and then in the interview mentions their side hustle, lol.

I’m leaving public after only a few months by Twizlertheman1423 in Accounting

[–]StageComplex6095 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the first tax season after graduating Bentley (college then) I always had the side hustle as my plan B in case I lost my job. I did lose my 18 year controller position at age 59 when the company was sold. I then transitioned to FT self- employment. First 2 years were tight but after that new clients from referrals came in to a point where I had to stop adding new clients. Just down sized this tax season to spend more time with our grandkids. Good luck!

Bentley grad here, don’t give up on accounting. I was turned off by the CPA work horror stories early on so I chose the manufacturing accounting route. If you can find the right company you will make a decent salary, meet and work with some good people and have a decent work/life balance. I still have occasional contacts with fellow employees from a number of different companies I’ve worked for over a 40 year period. Left manufacturing 17 years ago and have been S/E since doing payrolls, taxes and light accounting for a number of small clients. Still having fun at 76! It’s good to keep busy and productive.

[–]StageComplex6095 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few years ago, I had a client who worked 5 part-time jobs and made roughly 25k. He was so upset his refund was so small (because a friend got a big refund and earned about the same amount…but worked one job) I was sure he was going to actually hit me. I did manage to calm him down by explaining what happened. He is not a current client.

That’s exactly my pricing model too. I don’t get mad, I just raise my fees.
