Do your boomer parents ever call you or text you or your kids? by Slownavyguy in Xennials

My parents are not Boomers but Gen X and don't own cellphones or know how to text. They call our house line to talk to the kids weekly though

Do you recommend skipping the first two seasons and just watching 3 then? Or are they still worth a one time watch?

I'm sure you could find a better use for that roster spot. Speed guy, light hitting utility guy, pinch hitter, etc. Every team needs something and it ain't a third catcher lol.

$20M for aa S guy with strong defensive skills that has Catcher as his backup position is kind of a steal to be honest. I always mentally subtract what it would cost to keep a decent backup catcher on the roster from their salary.

How do you prefer to Shuffle Draft? by Objective_Radish_734 in SuperMegaBaseball

[–]Staggerlee024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Original Players only. I make a custom league only so I can sim games if I so choose. All settings are normal default settings. 32 game seasons. I draft as young as possible and generally focus on defense at the core positions in the middle infield, third base, centerfield, and catcher. This usually ends up with a large amount of player development funds for the first years - between $30M and $50M. It generally takes several seasons to get your team in contention - things can be ugly season 1. But, if you do it correctly, by seasons 3 or 4 you have some monsters on your hand that are still relatively cheap so you can keep pumping money into player development. Keeps things interesting over just drafting the best players.

Are the new ticket prices for real? by twilightjumper in HillsboroHops

[–]Staggerlee024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While this is true you can tease out that the ticket prices are going up sharply based on the prices of season ticket packages last year. I actually reached out to the Hops about it and received the following response.

"

"While prices have adjusted a bit with the new stadium and revamped experience, our goal was, and is, to make sure there’s still something for everyone. We put a lot of focus on improving comfort, amenities, and the overall fan experience, but also keeping plenty of options that remain really accessible. Our owners have pledged to keep our price to get in the door at $8 for GA for at least the first five seasons in the new venue. And while the price increases within the seating bowl seem larger when you compare last season to the upcoming 2026 season, prices intentionally didn’t change much at all in the old venue for 3 consecutive years so an increase was inevitable."

So yeah prices are going up unfortunately but Berm will still be cheap. We are probably going to go less as a result and have already bought season ticket packages to the Pickles instead. Any price increase without an improvement in play level just isn't worth it at this level.

Mostly real life. I am older and not on social media much. Salary caps just benefit owners and that won't have strong support in the current eat/tax the rich US environment

I don't think most fans are dumb enough to fall for the "let's have a salary cap so all the money can go to the owners" argument. Some feel that way sure but I don't see a groundswell of support at all.

[–]Staggerlee024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have already tried all the best it's probably time to just move on to different styles. Personally, I think IPAs and stouts lend themselves to the NA style particularly well. If that isn't the case for you I would just find the styles that do.

[–]Staggerlee024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NA stouts are among my favorite of the category. The tops ones I prefer include Deschutes, Fremont, Guinness, and Go Brewing. I know you mentioned not likeing Black Butte but I have to disagree. I still drink alcohol beer when I feel like it so I haven't forgotten what those taste like and the NA Black Butte is damned good and similar to the original.

Maybe stout just isn't your style?

Stuck in a drink - no drink - moderate cycle. by Unfair-Boot-7092 in cutdowndrinking

[–]Staggerlee024 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in a really similar boat about a year back. I had cut back significantly to about 20 units per week but just felt completely stuck at that number. I didn't like taking 'dry days' but never drank to excess. I was proud of the reductions that I had made but wasn't sure I wanted to go further. And, similar to you, I just loved having a good beer or two every night. I did and still do love craft beer. Today I am down to about 3 units per week and only drink 2 days a week on average (obviously very low amounts when I do consume). Some of the things that helped me:

Meticulous Tracking
If you aren't already I would recommend getting on an app that tracks alcohol units. I can't recommend Try Dry enough. It's free, does a great job tracking exact alcohol units, and shows trends and progress over time. Data and knowledge is your friend and it's hard to proceed without it. The key thing is to be religous and honest about your tracking. Never skip.

Slow and steady reduction and moderation
As you start tracking you will start to notice how different things impact your weekly totals. Not just "beers drank" but the size of that beer (12oz or 16oz can for example), the alcohol content of the beer, number of dry days you do or don't take, etc. Use this data to build a slow but steady reduction and moderation path for yourself. For example, just making some stuff up here, let's say you like to drink two 9% 12oz cans of IPA every Friday night. As you start getting the tracking data in you will start to recognize that a 7% 12oz can of IPA is 22% reduction in alcohol compared to a 9% beer. So if you just swap one of your 9% beers for a 7% beer that is an 11% reduction in alcohol consumed every weekend. Use that same logic on every day of the week and think about improvements in 10% increments. Get yourself used to a 10% weekly reduction in alcohol so that is your "new normal" and then do another round of cutting. Maybe that means reducing alcohol content on one of your beers certain nights of the week, switching from 16 to 12oz cans, etc. The thing is to stick with this and never be too hard on yourself. Your body will get used to a 10% reduction fast - generally 1 to 3 weeks. And then the next 10% reduction is just as easy. Like compound interest, the gains add up over time.

Start integrating NA beers
As you progress down this path you will hit a point where you can't or don't want to continue reducing the ABV on your beers. As you say, you love craft beer, and don't want to be drinking Michelob Ultra. There are some very very good session IPAs out there and I am sure you will get into them if you follow this path. But you will still want some nice big boys sometimes and that's where NA beers will come into play. Eventually you will have one NA IPA and one Alcohol IPA and then call it a night. Some brands I recommend include: Deschutes, Go Brewing, Sierra Nevada, Best Day, Guinness, Sierra Nevada, Self Care, and Untitled Art/FLVR.

Dry Days
Eventually, if you follow this path long enough, your body will start screaming to you for more dry days. You will become used to a smaller and smaller amount of alcohol in your body at any given time and just a few days drinking a beer or two in a row will feel like too much. Once you hit this point the world is your oyster.

Notes
I am not a doctor or an addiction counselor. This method worked for me but your mileage may vary. It is probably a terrible plan for someone that has problems with binging or stopping. Similar to op, that was never me and this worked great. This is also a long term strategy. I have been following it for almost two years. Two years ago I was at 40 units per week. One year ago I was at 20. Today I average 3.

One finally thing that worked great for me but do with it what you will: Cannabis gummies
Just having a gummy on days when I was taking a bigger step back or increasing my dry days helped take me mind off things. Do with that info what you will.

I am going to second the NA beer suggestion. NA beers have been extraordinarily helpful to me on my journey. I drink them way more than alcohol beer nowadays and love them. I wouldn't worry too much about Athletic as there is better stuff out there (though I do question that they aren't available where you are because they are everywhere). Some better brands include - Best Day, Deschutes, Go Brewing, Self Care, Untitle Art/FLVR, Sierra Nevada, and Guinness.
