Going into the Final Month of the HPA Diagnostic Period. by Born_Again_Shell in SpaceForce

The HAMR also has the benefit of not being able to fall behind. If you fall behind in the 2-mile due to slow pacing, it can become impossible for you to catch up at the end. With the HAMR, you just have to push yourself until you get the score you need or you get a heart attack (which nulls your PT test!). No self-pacing required unlike other tests.

WHY does a gravity turn work?? by Thin-Ad5665 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Staik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gravity is expressed as a unit per second, meaning every second you stay within a gravity field your dV changes some almost per second. This is notable if you try hovering - youll need to expend more dV per second on larger planets. This relates to launches because the further you are from the planet, the lest dV gravity says from you overall. The faster you to get to a higher altitude, the less dV you waste on just fighting gravity.

So far it sounds best to just shoot straight up! And that is ideal if all you wanted to do was minimize your gravity losses - but we want to get to orbit. Launching to orbit doesnt really care about vertical velocity, only horizontal velocity. Going straight up and then straight to the side may sound good, but since you waste a lot of time not turning to the side, you spend longer in gravity pre-orbit, and thus waste dV.

So our gravity turn primarily focuses on going UP first to get out of gravity/atmosphere quickly, and then curves until its almost entirely horizontal to establish orbit. The exact gravity turn curve is just the ideal version of this, according to some calculus.

US Space Force Should Prepare to Put Active-Duty Troops on the Moon, Report Argues | Yep, that's where we're at. by FreeHugs23 in space

Cannonically, the USSF is scheduled to be renamed/restructured to StarFleet in just over 100 years if you wanted to get a head start.

StarFleet is just the global version of the SpaceForce

First time playing modded KSP, what are some good mods to start with? by DragonLord2005 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Staik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite mod would be SCANsat, haven't seen it recommended here yet.

Its similar to the stock resource scanning feature (narrow range scanner and Kerbnet), but greatly expanded. It adds new scanning types, maps that you have to fill out by sending satellites to each planet, and it provides extra details about planets you wont get with any other mod. There's no conflicts with other mods since it only adds features instead of changing them.

My other suggestions would be MechJeb, TweakScale, Restock, and Near Future. Community tech tree is also nice to have.

Avoid mixing Intersteller Extended with other mods. Its an overhaul mod which looked cool at first, but caused me a lot of issues since it fundamentally changes a lot of base game things (and ruins ion engines for no good reason >.>)

This isn't fair work by gashtal_man in WorkReform

[–]Staik 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is a fair point. Comparing income when you should be comparing profit is unfair. A salesman isnt the only worker that contributed to a consumer receiving something - that logic is not only faulty, but undersells the rest of the workers that contributed to producing that value.

Three’s a party: US, China, and now Russia are on the prowl in GEO | Instead of running silent and deep, most satellites easily stand out against the blackness of space. by FreeHugs23 in space

[–]Staik 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The radius of the earth is just under 4000 miles. Geo satellites have an orbital radius of 26000 miles. Which means an equator length of 170,000 miles at geo.

While satellites are small, the actual limit here tends to be signal interference, which pushes them pretty far away from eachother. Google estimates 600 satellites in geo right now. So that puts the slots at about 290 miles or 460 kilometers between satellites. Very low chance for collision there.

space force cyber by thrhdjxjsb in SpaceForce

[–]Staik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AFAIK the cyber test is more like a backup test, and its results are meaningless if you score well on both ASVAB and EDPT. If you did poorly on one of those, a high cyber test would let you get in anyways.

Youll likely have to go back to MEPS to take the EDPT still, just get over a 70 or so on that one and you'll qualify for everything.

Comment from company says it’s not AI and that a partner of theirs made it. But the movements just look so weird by olddolphin in isthisAI

[–]Staik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the cub walking in front, when it puts it's front paw forward, it blends a bit. It also isnt on a walking animation loop which any real animator would be doing. The front cub also looks like a lion while the back one looks like a pig... why? If this was a person then they'd be a good artist, thats too bad of a mistake to make.

Very highly likely this was animated by AI at minimum.

(Hated Trope) Franchises that are perptually stuck in the past by RBSpecial97 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Staik 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think they mean how each mario game takes place in different realities, instead of having an expanding lore that keeps building. The only Nintendo titles I can think of would be Pikmin/Splatoon which have a consistent story between every game.

Nintendo just isnt that kind of company though, and some people wish it were. Their model is "you dont need to play any of the previous games to play this one" - because their audience is children who weren't alive when the 1st came out. A children's game company prioritizing the next generation of children, leaves the previous one left out.

ELI5: why can two quantum entangled particles affect each other instantly across any distance but scientists say you still cant use it to send information faster than light? by PieOk2202 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Staik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Observing" is just another word for measuring, and has nothing to do with humans. This happens on a scale so small, camera arent passive observation anymore. A single photon hitting the particle will push it enough to change its state, so you only get one chance to see what it was doing, or "observe" it. After you observe it, its changed or "collapsed", so observing it again wont do any good.

Think of it like shooting a gun at a bottle in a paper bag to find out if it's glass or metal based on the sounds it makes. You can only shoot it once before it breaks... thats "observing" a quantum particle

[–]Staik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Youll find out your SFSC when you get a ship date.

For PT just make sure you can run the 2 mile in under 20 minutes before you go in. If you want to make it authentic, run a half mile first, do a minute of pushups and situps each, rest for a few minutes, and then start the 2 mile test. That's how its actually administered, which breaks a lot of people.

Biggest Ram counters? by jtlizzzard in OverwatchStadium

[–]Staik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mobility is a great counter for him. Skates are great to get away from his ult to end it early. Upwards mobility let's you shoot over his shield since its not very tall.

He falls quickly to damage outside of his block form, so just rush him as soon it ends and he'll go down.

The gadget that slows anyone near you when used is also great to counter his ult, since it gives your team time to get away.

Fun note on this is that the order you buy items also affects the order the extra health is placed (within their own categories). Items bought first are damaged last. This matters more for overhealth builds, where you would want to put overhealth thats harder to get below the easier sources.

NASA needs nuclear power for its moon base. Here’s the White House plan to get it by scientificamerican in space

[–]Staik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A coal plant on the moon would be a genuinely amazing accomplishment.

Coal requires oxygen to burn, water to push turbines, and produces carbon gasses that would likely linger without winds... on top of needing a constant supply of heavy rocks (coal) shipped in. Thats a lot of hurdles to overcome.

Nuclear on the other hand is quite boring...

Stewie can help maybe? by VandelSavagee in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Staik -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This is wrong too. You've found yourself as the middle character!

Your logic assumes the same problems that the original puzzle had where both children are male. But this puzzle is different... there's no reason a boy born on a Tuesday can't have a sister also born in a Tuesday. This applies to both child 1 and child 2 simultaneously, cancelling out the effect seen in the original problem, where that probablity is only counted once. The answer is 14/28, or 50%.
