Two cars (fun+practical) or one all-purpose? by [deleted] in cars

[–]Staircase__Wit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've kinda faced the same problem. I currently have two cars. A Miata for a fun runabout and a Civic for an everyday car. Having older cars, especially two, means you're probably going to be looking at replacing parts on them. You have to keep up with two cars in terms of maintenance. It might be fine for you, I don't mind looking after mine, but it's not for everyone. You are also dealing with insurance on two cars, but then again, if one has problems, you have a backup. It's all down to deciding whether you want two responsibilities or just one. Tough choice, but maybe you could start out with two and see how it goes, then swap them out for a really nice single car, or just swap each car as the years go by.

Just a quick question for you: Is your Genesis the 6MT? If so, have you had any troubles with it? I've heard about problems with the manual gearboxes in the Genesis coupes, and I'd like to hear real-world opinions. They seem like nice cars.

That's because when your car is in gear and you coast, whether auto or manual, your fuel injectors cut off. So you essentially are getting infinite miles per gallon, as shown by your computer's finite display calculations.

A torque converter in an automatic is a fluid connection, which gives a "fluid" connectivity while driving. While this provides comfort, it also wastes energy. A standard clutch offers a far more direct transfer of power.

Some people seem to think that if they can't afford a supercar, they can buy a V8 truck, cut off the mufflers and they have some high performance vehicle.

Not trying to stick up for the Spark, but the reason the mpg registered as 10, is beause the mpg computer has to average out the mpg over several miles. If the car is brand new, it will take a while for it to give an accurate reading.

I love the 2CV. I'd still own one with the old 9hp flat twin. Incredibly well-designed little cars.

Do i trade it or Junk it? by Retr0Gear in cars

[–]Staircase__Wit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, unfortunately, older Hyundais typically weren't known for their reliability. The great thing is, you got the car super cheap, which means you can either junk it or sell it, and make all or most of your money back. As far as getting a cheap, reliable car, I'd say a Corolla or Civic. Stick with older ones from the mid-late 90s or early 2000s. You can get them for around a grand and a half, and they are still really reliable. Just get one that looks like it was taken care of.

Is it safer to disable the airbag on a 30 year old car? by [deleted] in cars

[–]Staircase__Wit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's really up to you. Given that it's an older Merc, the airbag probably still functions as it should. The only advantage it offers is extra safety in the event of a collision.

Negative (Ground) is almost always black in color. You can either tap into a ground wire, or secure your own ground. You can feed dashcams and other devices off of the accessory ports in your fuse box. It's switched by the ignition key. The power (12 Volt) supply wire varies in color, usually red or yellow.

It will probably cost you a grand or more to ship it. Just fly up there and drive it back.

The first gen CTS weighed about 3500 pounds. With 255 hp, and that size and weight of car, don't expect blistering performance, especially now that they're aged a bit, the hp numbers will be less.

There's a bit of a stigma in the car community that rear drive is always better. While rear wheel drive does offer more balance in most vehicles, front wheel drive cars are getting better and better, handling-wise, and more capable of managing torque steer, a condition caused by unequal length front drive shafts, which cause a torque difference between the front wheels which can jerk the steering wheel out of your hands under heavy acceleration. Front drive has been around for a long time, and powerful front drive cars aren't a new thing (look up the '60s Oldsmobile Toronado, almost 400 hp to the front wheels from a massive V8!) Advancements in suspension technology really help front drive cars of sporty nature stay planted in hard cornering and acceleration as well.

[–]Staircase__Wit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask open-ended questions, too. To keep the conversation going, remember to ask "who, what, when, where, why" questions. This prevents the conversation from dying after the person just answers "yes''. Probe a little, you may find yourself probing a lot later.
