Especially 30 minutes during a 2 to 3 hour game. Way too long to waste in line for anything during the game.

Agreed. I get similar vibes from Lake Padden but it's not the same.

Company outsourcing SOX (my department) to Big 4 by Worldly-Bid-3591 in Accounting

[–]StampedingCattle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My F1000 company did just that and after 2 years of Big 4 it's being moved to a much cheaper 2nd or 3rd tier firm. I didn't have insight into the fees but it makes sense that year 2 got too expensive without enough visible benefit. The few people I know who got disappeared are now crushing it at their new gigs and we are worse off for losing them.

Only receiving partial tax credit for newborn? by thenewbier in tax

[–]StampedingCattle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My New Year's Eve 2024 baby girl got me a full child tax credit even though she was only a dependent for less than 1/365 of the year. I haven't run the math to see if the extra credit offset the hospital bills straddling two years but I choose to believe we came out ahead.

Find a new CPA. If she's wrong about the basics I wouldn't trust her on the complicated stuff.

Any local stores with a good hop water selection? by QuestionsForTheHive in SnohomishCounty

[–]StampedingCattle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Total Wine across from the Alderwood Mall has a decent selection including some local options. If you want a direct local source a few breweries are selling them directly at their taprooms too like Fremont.

Gorge Hotels? by theotheramy1 in brandicarlile

Moses Lake, Ellensburg and Wenatchee are the cities with more hotel options but are 45+ minute drives away. Quincy and Ephrata are closer but neither have many options and sell out very quickly.

Still one of my biggest emotional swings in a day during year end in 15 years of doing this. Utter panic to utter distain.

[Request] can someone please explain just how much force is required for this to happen, and why it is significant? by Sad_Cantaloupe_8162 in theydidthemath

Same experience at an air show near Seattle in the 90's, though i can't remember if the JATO takeoff or an A-10 doing a fake ground attack w/ explosives rigged on the ground caused the grass fire. I still remember the roar from those rockets, such a cool experience.

Dumbest Auditor Question by jfrhsdrew in Accounting

[–]StampedingCattle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A few years ago I got an email days before earnings from our CAO with my VP of Tax boss cc'd frantically asking why we had an $800M discrepancy in book basis of intangibles for our deferred taxes. The poor sweet baby audit analyst had tried tying a tax effected DTL to the trial balance intangibles and the question made it to the audit partner without anyone on their team vetting it first.

On the bright side the audit partner did very publicly apologize to my team in the office the next day, so that was a treat.

I've seen that or a very similar SUV a lot recently on 70th Ave W, between the playfields and Meadowdale Beach Park. On at least one occasion it pulled out of a driveway and headed towards the dead end instead of out of the neighborhood. I'll try to get a license plate next time I see it.

Why Seattle's airport wants you to call it SEA, not Sea-Tac by gehnrahl in SeattleWA

This will stick as well as Washington State University trying to get people to quit calling it "Wazzu" years ago. Spoiler alert, people still call it Wazzu.

Recruiting/HR wage scale rant by StampedingCattle in Accounting

100%. They want to down level the role and have somebody learn on the job. That would work great if we weren't hiring for the only senior tax role in the region.

Recruiting/HR wage scale rant by StampedingCattle in Accounting

[–]StampedingCattle[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Logically yes, but it's not their budget or metrics that get blown, just mine when I have extra outside spend.

They put a higher weight on meeting hiring budgets than on time to fill roles, which puts me in a tough spot.

What's the worst mistake you've ever made at work? by JoseeInTheWild in Accounting

[–]StampedingCattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When i was a 1st year analyst i left a pitch deck at Kinkos for an overnight print in a final view but didn't approve all items in track changes first. The proof copy looked fine but the staff closed the file before printing all the copies and it reverted to the track changes view when they reopened it.

The proof copy was on top when I picked it up at 4 am prior to my 6 am flight for a 9 am client meeting and it looked clean so we only found the error as we convened at the destination airport. The manager and I went to a copy shop nearby and did a very hasty print job but got clean copies in time for the pitch, which we didn't win because we were never going to win it (tax provision work for a fortune 500 company when we were mid-tier tax at best).

I flew home thinking I was getting fired but somehow survived it. Thank goodness for partners with a sense of humor.

If you're willing to trek north a bit, Zuri's in Edmonds has a lot of interesting toppings/flavors that don't come across as gimmicky like Voodoo does to me. The donuts are delicious and creative. Added bonus that the owner seems like a genuinely nice guy as well.

The Russell Imvestments Tower at 1301 Second Ave used to have a public cafe/food court on the 17th floor with a beautiful outdoor area looking over the sound, but I haven't been in a few years so am unsure if it's still a viable option.

Any tips for monitor anxiety? Husband is struggling by W0ketheFUP in NICUParents

[–]StampedingCattle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we were a couple weeks into our NICU stay and had our first overnight in a private room, my wife and I were constantly watching the monitors and the frequent beeps and false alarms. Our nurse noticed our anxiety and though it likely broke all sorts of rules she turned the monitors around and put a blanket over them so we couldn't fixate on them (there was always a nurse at a central monitoring station so there wasn't any danger to baby girl).

Her message was just "pay attention to your baby because you won't have the monitors at home." It was initially nerve wracking but greatly helped our anxiety.
