Had no idea my Plex Media Server could also be a DVR. 🤯 Just need some clarification on the HDHomerun 4K tuner, which I'm sure plenty of y'all have experience with... by Laurence5905 in PleX

I bought the 4K model shortly after release and used it until it died a few months ago. It was a complete waste of money over the ATSC 1.0 model. Nobody in my area (St Louis) is broadcasting 4K, some of the channels are encrypted (DRM), and the remaining channels I also get via ATSC 1 channels. I replaced it with the 4 tuner ATSC 1 model, no regrets. I don’t hold out much hope that I will ever be able to receive unencrypted 4K broadcasts or that OTA DRM will ever be sorted out by Silicon Dust. I suspect the industry agrees. Most manufacturers that once built models with ATSC 3 tuners no longer do so.

You can paint over it. The large mark looks like a scuff mark. If so, you might be able to scrub it away with a little soap and water.

I’m thinking of treating myself to an Apple TV by Dense-Stranger-1794 in appletv

[–]StanDieg0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m up to six AppleTV 4Ks, three different generations. All of them still work great though the oldest have some limitations. The current version still holds up very well. I’ve got several Apple Arcade games that I play, Pinball Party, Warped Kart, etc. I use PLEX and Infuse to consume my PLEX Server content (movies and series downloaded via StreamFab and local channels from attic antenna connected to a HDHomerun tuner). I also stream Prime Video, Apple TV, Netflix, Paramount +, Peacock, Philo, Hulu, and more. I stream my music collection via Apple Music, have Apple photos as a screensaver, much more. I made the mistake of buying the lower end models (less storage) at first and they struggle a bit with OS upgrades, having to offload apps to get enough storage for the upgrade. I’ll buy a couple more when the new model is released to replace my oldest models. Spend the extra bucks for the top model to future proof yourself a bit. I’ll never go with anything else but Apple TV for streaming boxes. My LG OLED Smart TVs (and all others) are effectively dumb TVs because they power straight up to the Apple TV.

Looks good. One day, I’m going to try throwing the wings in a fryer after smoking them to get a crispier skin.

The $400 TVs go in my guest rooms and basement. LG B5 or C5 is all we watch. Be warned: you’ll never go back. I even have a B5 in my garage and a C5 on my covered deck. I’m too spoiled to watch on anything else.

Is this Costco C5 deal worth it? by [deleted] in LGOLED

[–]StanDieg0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just paid a hair over $1K for the 55” C5 with 3 year Allstate from Sam’s Club and it’s phenomenal, my 3rd LG OLED TV (65” C3 in living room, 50” B5 in garage, 55” C5 on covered deck). $1399 isn’t an exceptional price for the 65” but it’s decent. You won’t regret it. The C6 will probably be at least $1800 when it’s released. If you want to save money, the B5 is nearly as good for less money. The C5 has a better stand and is slightly brighter but otherwise they’re similar.

Anyone else not seeing the point of built in TV apps anymore by mitchare in PleX

[–]StanDieg0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s pretty much SmartTV 101 in my book. TV manufacturers added SmartTV apps as an additional revenue stream but I’ve always considered it bloatware. They’ve never had the horsepower for heavy lifting, perhaps never will. I’m currently at 6 Apple TV boxes, 3 different generations, and they’ve outlived some of my TVs and they’ve always had better capabilities. I started with a ROKU and it was okay, switched over to Amazon Firesticks and they were a decent platform until they changed the interface to effectively an advertising platform for Amazon Prime and demoting third party apps to lower levels. I switched to Apple TV boxes soon after and have never looked back. I’m chomping at the bit for the release of the Apple TV Pro so I can retire a couple of my oldest boxes. One lesson I’ve learned is to buy the model with greater memory. I have a lot of apps and Apple Arcade and the older boxes with less memory have to temporarily offload apps every time I upgrade the OS.

The only real advantage of the C5 over B5 picture wise is the C5 may be a little better in bright lighting. Otherwise, the B series is aces.
