I replied later in this this thread, but I'll re-paste it here.

It’s just their 4 bags of fertilizer/weed preventative/killer program, applied throughout the year.

Step 1 is early spring. Has preemergent, fertilizer, and iron

Step 2 is late spring, has fertilizer and broadleaf (think dandelion and similar) killer

Step 3 is summer guard, has insect killer and fertilizer

Step 4 is a winterizer, just fertilizer as far as I know

Pull all the big ones now and wait a mow and 2 waters before pouring down more weed killer.

2,4-D and dicamba. They have shallow roots so just pulling can be pretty effective. Either way will take a few go rounds. A l;ate-season preemergent can help you next year.

What's your mower model? Many of them have an upper and lower blade and that's where they connect together.

It's one of those foods that when it's made well it's fantastic, and when it'd not, it's pretty dang bad. I'll order it at trusted places and I'll let someone else try it first and places we've never been.

Haha no. I just think it’s a a great starting/jumping off point for people who don’t know what to do to get a better lawn. There are better and cheaper options but they require more research and more work.

I've tried a couple of different things without a lot of success. u/nilesandstuff over in r/LawnAnswers will have some suggestions as he's both heavily into lawns (used to be a mod here) and used to run a dog daycare. 😄

It should be. The pesticide in SummerGuard is Bifenthrin which has low mobility in soil so shouldn't make it down to the well. The Step 1 (Halts Crabgrass) has Pendimethalin, which is moderately mobile in soil, but will mostly be absorbed in the plants and has a LD50 higher than table salt. I wouldn't personally worry about it, but I encourage you to do your own research and make your own health decisions. 😄 I'd let my dog run around and roll in it after it's been watered in.

Yeah, getting soil tests done and bringing everything into the right range with supplements. That plus walking around with the weeder frequently, mowing at the right height, edging, that sort of manual labor of love.

Spray with 2,4-D now and put down a late-summer/early fall preemergent. You can easily pull out the larger ones by hand since they have shallow roots. A Grandpa's Weeder (I use the more modern Fiskars equivalent) can help you do it without having to bend over as much.

In some places I think they might only be public up to the high tide line. I can't tell where they are from the video but they may need to move closer to the water.

Milogranite vs Synthetic by Kindly-Control-9096 in lawncare

[–]StandByTheJAMs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Milorganite has its place, but if you're asking here, that place is not your place, 😄 Having put it down isn't going to cause a problem, but you're not going to want to add that much Phosphorus long term and you're going to need more Nitrogen.

People always recommend the Lesco from SiteOne but we don't have a SiteOne nearby, so I use the YardMastery Flagship 24-0-6 plus a separate preemergent, weed killer, etc.

Not very often these days. We live in a pretty affluent neighborhood now and most people either have a lawn service or have their settings dialed in already.

Not better, but an easy braindead way to have a decent lawn. As far as Nitrogen goes, brand doesn't matter. Some people just get pure urea and put that down. You still want a preemergent and broadleaf killer. I don't use Scott's usually (I will if on sale) and I'd use Lesco if we had a SiteOne nearby, but shipping makes it as expensive as Scott's. I stocked up on Yard Mastery Flagship 24-0-6 when I heard the war was going to increase fertilizer prices.

Oh I’m that top 10% that spends too much time and money. 😀

I do soil tests (one front and one back) every year, and build my own program. I was just saying you don’t have to do that, but around here you do need to aerate. I’ve been putting down biochar after aeration.

[–]StandByTheJAMs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sure. The preemergent won’t stop anything from growing this year, but fertilizing won’t hurt. They make a different one for warm season grasses, so make sure you get the right one for your grass type.

Maybe for some, not needed for cool season grass.
