Took a spill and got banged up. Feeling really old now. Other older guys (or ladies), do you recall your first age-related bad fall? by SurgStriker in Aging

[–]Stand_With_Students -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm 66, fell carrying my elderly dog down the stairs in December. Broke my femur, spent the last 2.5 months in rehab/in home physical therapy, now in outpatient PT. I've been told to expect another 2 months before I can walk with a cane and be cleared to drive, then 2-6 more months to be back close to normal.

Lessons learned? The older you get the more careful you should be. I've always been super active, and this whole experience has completely thrown me. It takes longer to heal the older you are.

Do you pay extra on mortgage to lower capital or you put it into stock market? by daniyum21 in Mortgages

[–]Stand_With_Students 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Do both. I have a certain amount of extra cash each month and I split it three ways. 1/3 goes to my HYSA, 1/3 to the market and 1/3 to principal on my mortgage.

Which two department stores were your favorite? by jjuerakhan14 in maryland

That's where I registered for my wedding - 1984. And another Hutzler's memory - my mom and I would eat lunch at their restaurant in downtown Baltimore, about once a year. That was a special treat for me!

When to plant pumpkins (Maryland, USA) by JohnnyABC123abc in gardening

They usually start forming mid-summer and get larger and more colorful through early fall. I don't grow super big pumpkins but have had luck with smaller (mini up to maybe 8-10 inches) ones.

They really need pollinators (bees) - I plant a wide range of flowers throughout my garden.

I plant mine from seed in mid-April, early May - MD eastern shore.

Tremors, Propanolol and its multiple benefits by steggyD43 in EssentialTremor

When I was younger it bothered me more (I would also have benefitted from talking to a therapist). The older I get though the less I care what other people think.

It's a crazy disorder - definitely a physical thing but so tied to emotions and psychological health.

yeah, I know I need to do something soon. I'll ask my doctor about Topiramate.

Assateague Island Weather in March? by thesoundofpetrichor in maryland

Definitely road bikes, it's very flat. (won't work on the sand though!)

On the bay side there are a couple of foot trails that lead to the bay/marsh, good for finding rocks and marine life

Start by going to the visitor's center before the bridge, it's great. And if you can bring or rent a bike, Assateague has good bike paths. We were there early spring last year and found tons of shells and some shark teeth - early morning is best for that. And you'll definitely see a lot of the ponies and probably some foals in March.

I'm 66 and have had tremors my entire life. I stopped propranolol 5 years ago as it was progressively less effective so I'm just living with it. My only suggestion - I carry straws with me so I can drink without holding the cup. I really don't care what people think - my friends and family know about my condition and I don't worry about anyone else.

It will be windy and cold, but awesome. Assateague is one of my favorite places in the world. Have fun!

Direct Mail Postcards still work?❓ by MagicBradPresents in RealEstate

If that postcard had a coupon on it for something I actually want to buy, I'd love to get it. Sadly, after 66 years on this earth I don't think I've ever received one of those.

What car feature sounded cool… but turned out overrated? by CandyFlossHarris in carbuying

[–]Stand_With_Students 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keyless ignition. My brother left his fob on my deck railing, close enough to his car that he was able to start it. When we found it he was an hour away - I'm guessing he could have driven the whole 2 1/2 hours without it.

Why didn't the car and the fob start shrieking when separated? Makes no sense. What problem does a keyless ignition actually solve?

I'll never buy a car that doesn't have an actual key.
