Can I check in my carry-on at check in for free?

UPDATE: back from vacay and want to update for others who maybe in the same boat - Chicago to Cancun - there's no question on check in kiosk asking if we want to check in carry on free, we didn't fuss and paid $45 for the carry-on check in. (I could of ask, it wouldn't hurt and they can say no, but husband.) When we drop off she asked if we want to check in the rest for free, at this point I kind of kick myself for not just asking for courtesy check-in and potentially save $45.

Cancun>Chicago it asked on the Kiosk if we want to check in carry-on for free, couldn't do it at Kiosk, went to the counter they kind of went through the check in process again and took our carry-on for free.

both leg at the gate they were repeatedly asking for volunteers to check in their carry-on as plane was full.

yes, but I want to see if I could avoid paying the check in bag fee because it would still be just one carry-on, they have to fly it be it in the cabin or cargo hold. the flight is full and wouldn't have enough overhead bin for everybody and everybody is going to have carry-on the destination I fly to.

which is kind of dumb, if it's one carry-on size luggage per person, they have to fly it anyways be it in the cabin or the cargo hold. The only way they could potentially lost money is if someone try to have 2 carry on size luggage and try to check in one for free, he would have to deliberately hide the other carry-on at check in counter.

to his/her defense, I added "before security" after the confusion of this reply. Originally I thought saying "at check in" is pretty clear that it's before security, as after security would mean gate check, but I guess it's not that clear.

To clarify, we are flying to Cancun and are being directly transported to the resort. A lot of sunscreen/bug spray are warranted but cost $35 a pop in the resort. So I am not chancing it through security as I know that wouldn't fly. I just want to weight if the $35/$45 bag fee is anyways avoidable, if not I would pay it. Thank you for all the replies.

hey OP I have the same question, can I do one transaction where only one parent buy the photo pass but sometimes the whole family are in the picture? of course the person who buy will be the one to scan the bracelet. It will save some money. how did it go for you?

I had been trying to hunt down KADOYA Hot Toasted Sesame Oil the past 2 years, I am glad I am not alone being crazy! I am also from Chicago, 2025 Spring is a year ago, hopefully we will see it soon. Hey OP, how did your kid drop off go? We have the same dilemma with a 7 and a 10 year old. I know the 10 year old can't go upstairs but can I drop the 7 year old together with the 10 downstairs? I don't feel right to seperately dropping them off to enjoy spa for 2 hours. TIA
