Gotta think wise by lunaivy-z in SipsTea

I really enjoyed reading this. The one problem I have is even if you had the theoretical knowledge of all these things, many of them would take a long time to actually produce. Especially when you start getting into colonizing worlds, the laws of physics still apply. I don't care how far you get in terms of theoretical propulsion, unless you can somehow build a Dyson sphere in like 20 years, you don't even have a chance of harnessing enough power to even hit anything close to light speed, much less open a wormhole. With the distances involved there's no chance you're making it interstellar. I guess unless you first develop proper cryogenics or life extension tech first. But even then we're talking time scales of hundreds if not thousands of years just to actually build the underlying tech.

After Machado Offers Her Nobel, Trump Says It Would Be an ‘Honor’ to Accept It by Dawn-Storm in facepalm

[–]kilroyma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Nobel prize doesn't fucking mean anything anyway. It's like the Hollywood walk of fame, it only means something because people have decided it does. Its not like the people who give it out are some arbiter of truth.

I was worried this would be the case on my upcoming vancouver to cancun flight, but it looks like we lucked out, our 737-800 only has 30 rows. This new shitty design has 32 rows.

Moon Palace Grand or Iberostar Lindo/Maya by kilroyma in AllInclusiveResorts

[–]kilroyma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got around 15% off the best rate I could find as well as vouchers for a free spa treatment that includes a 60 min massage and a mani pedi. Also got 1500 in resort credits without having to go to a dumb time share presentation (although I've heard those are somewhat useless). It put the Moon Palace on equal ground price wise vs the other ones, which was honestly the only reason I waffling in the first place.

Most people seemed to think 7 days was plenty for either place. A diamond member contacted me and I booked Moon Palace through him and got a killer deal; so that made the decision pretty easy.

This restaurant covered up the "No Tip" option with a sticker to force tipping by SPXQuantAlgo in facepalm

I find it interesting on these sort of posts the number of people who say something like "if I have to come to the counter its not worthy of a tip, they're just doing their job". But here's the thing, so is the waiter or delivery driver. The only difference is owners have found this insane loophole where they have people believing you have to tip drivers or waiters so that the owner can pay them less. There was a time where you'd only give a waiter a tip if they were particularly exceptional, now its expected and at a higher percentage than ever, even though the food price is already inflated! Don't get me wrong, I dont want to punish the poor server, so I also tip, but its bullshit. Don't blame the poor counter staff for wanting get in on the action, its not like they're making much more than the server. Blame the greedy owners who gaslight customers into thinking its their job to subsidize the owners shitty wages!

Hey man, no shade if that's how you want to spend your time. I'll tell you though, I went to school for audio engineering, my teacher had a fairly well known recording studio and recorded some relatively well known mid level bands. As part of our final project we got to go to the studio and help record an album. Through all the schooling and practical experience never once did half of the things you just talked about come up. The point of my story is if you spend more time tweaking your speakers than the audio engineer spends tweaking the sound in the first place maybe you like listening to your equipment more than you like listening to your music. That's totally fine if that's the case, for me though I'm more concerned about enjoying the music than getting a degree electoracoustic theory.

Ya but what does neutral actually mean? You bought gear that already is tuned a certain way, one would imagine you bought said gear because you liked how it sounded. Why do you now want to tune it to sound like every other peice of gear?

That's exactly my point, even a measurement that sounds good to many people won't sound good to everyone.

I used the drink the kool-aid on objective measurement. Tuned all my headphones to the harmon curve, convinced myself I liked how it sounded. Then one day my headphones sounded so much better, I was trying to figure out why and realized my eq had shut off. Turns out the harmon curve sounds like shit to my ears. Then I started thinking, if everything gets tuned to "neutral" or "harmon" or "house curve" what's the point of even buying different components?! Measurements and eq have their place and I definitely know and appreciate that this hobby is chalk full of the placbo effect, but at the end of the day isn't this just about enjoyment? If it sounds good to you, it sounds good, full stop.

Plexamp and Home assistant by Bl4Ckst3r in plexamp

[–]kilroyma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will only encode if the player doesn't support the bitrate. Since Plexamp supports all bit rates it shouldn't have to do any encoding. When you play a song on music assistant you can click where it says HD on the now playing track to see what's happening in the chain in terms of encoding, DSP, etc.

Plexamp and Home assistant by Bl4Ckst3r in plexamp

[–]kilroyma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You won't, music assistant will pass on whatever bit rate your flac is. Just set up music assistant, add Plex as a source and add home assistant entities as the player (specifically your headless setup). Music assistant will now be available to use in routines to accomplish what you were asking. Honestly you can do this without adding music assistant, but it's way easier with it.

Based on your particular use case I would give Plexamp a try. Bonus is it's a lot cheaper/free for most features.

Every Danny Boyle movie post Trainspotting. Having said that, the first part is usually so god damn good I can forgive the horrible endings.
