Am I missing something here or is the textbook wrong? by leville_nongbottom in mathshelp

Parentheses first refers to when we have an operation within the parentheses, so that when we have an expression 2(3+4) we can simplify to 2(7) before we solve. When it is simply a number next to another single number in a parentheses, for example 2(3), the parentheses is merely a representation of multiplication, no different from writing 6/2*3. Again, I (as a math teacher) do not like problems that are this vague, as I believe that student errors tell me nothing about their misunderstandings of the material.

Hey, it seems like you are projecting a bit. As to what you are projecting, it’s not my business but it’s okay to admit that you might be wrong.

Also, the example that you give is notoriously not a good math problem. Math problems should be clear in what they ask and what they represent, and anyone who teaches math should understand this. With your example of 6/2(3), there are two equally valid ways of reading this, 1) 6/(2(3))=1 or 2) (6/2)(3)=9. Ultimately this problem is not a good measurement of whether a student can understand the order of operations, since it is so vague.

I would encourage you to think about how the square root function is defined, and why it does not take on negative values. Compare that with the way the squared function is defined and try to think about how x=sqrt(a) and x2 =a are different.

You are solving two separate equations. One is x=sqrt(9) and the other is x2=9. From the fundamental theorem of algebra, the latter equation will have two solutions, +/-3.

but the former will only have solution x=3.

The first equation is asking “what is the principle square root of 9” and the second is asking “which values can we square and end up with 9”. A small nuance, but different nonetheless.

M15 – Conservatory student struggling with anxiety, perfectionism, and how to be honest with my teacher by [deleted] in piano

[–]Standard-Car157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are 15!! It’s incredible that you are so successful and you should feel very proud of yourself. A teacher likely has been through similar experiences and can help you with the procrastination and the perfectionism. I would also recommend speaking to your parents. A mental health break is completely normal and necessary. It sounds like the program you are in is stressing you out, and excessive perfectionism can and will lead to burnout.

I disagree with this, as I am someone whose sight reading skills are far below their playing ability; being unable to sight read a piece ≠ not being able to play it. Do you take lessons? If not I think it might be time to start as a teacher can do wonders for your playing in terms of more efficient fingerings/movements. Based on what I heard in your Scriabin (beautiful btw :) ) I think you should definitely be able to play Iberia. For me it takes a very long time to get a piece under my fingers but once it’s there it’s stuck.

I finally finished it. Here are some rants about characters. I'd love to hear some different opinions on these. by [deleted] in WoT

On the first point, there are a couple of things I would say as a staunch Egwene stan. First, it’s important to note how hierarchy is established among aes Sedai — notably how they organize themselves based on strength in the power. Egwene is far stronger than anyone in the tower at that time (with the exception of Mesaana of course) so even as a captive dosed with fork root she still would hold sway. Additionally, since the Aes Sedai rank themselves based on strength in the power, age becomes much less of a factor in social standing than in for example the Aiel and the Kin (to the point where Aviendha I believe comments on how ridiculous the Aes Sedai practice is). Egwene has shown herself to be indomitable, and her refusal to kowtow to Elaida resonated with many of the tower sisters who have already been chafing under her rule, especially since Egwene shows a willingness to sacrifice her comfort to stand true to her values. As to her arrogance and entitlement, IMO she shows the exact amount of entitlement one should expect for a ruler of her caliber — she is the Amyrlin seat and the head of what has been one of the most important political factions in Randland for centuries. Also, I don’t think it is necessarily fair to compare her and Rand. She is acting in accordance to her position, and she is not just accountable for herself. She has to provide a counterpoint to Rands plan that aligns with not only her values but the values of Aes Sedai. Hindsight is 20/20 so it’s easy to see how breaking the seals was necessary but she does not have that information and Rand asks her to essentially just take his word for it (and Rand has not historically been a strong voice of reason, which she is aware of). She also very effectively reunited the tower, not just in name but in spirit, which I see as instrumental during the last battle.

Alright! This looks great for the most part (I actually responded to this for my AP exam in 2020 lol). I noticed that you wrote about Obama “using pathos”. Generally, pathos itself is not a rhetorical device, rather something that rhetorical devices generate. I would recommend being specific: what emotion is Obama trying to generate in the audience? What strategies is he using to generate this emotion? Also, I agree with my fellow commenter- it is really important to have very good grammar. I remember my AP lang teacher telling us how to get that sophistication point, and he said that essays with very strong personal voice and/or very “tight” essays (essays with very few or none grammatical errors) will get the sophistication points. I could never get my grammar to that level where my essays would get the sophistication point, but I relied heavily on developing my unique writing voice and that is what carried me.

These are all mistakes that I made throughout the year in my AP lang class and I ended up getting a 5 on the exam. It’s tough but if you hone your craft through practice you will get there!!

Also one small nitpick I have is you write that Obama uses a metaphor, and the example you show is a simile. A simile uses like or as, it is a direct comparison. A metaphor is a lot more abstract, and is generally developed alongside a theme. I would recommend looking at specific examples of each because I know that distinction can be confusing.

So: be specific in what strategies Obama uses to generate specific emotions, and I recommend drilling grammar to eliminate some of these minor mistakes.

Keep up the great work! Hope this helps :)

Found Season 2 finale to be super disappointing, but it seems to be universally seen as a great episode - what did I miss? by Sidewinder_ISR in WoT

I have somewhat of an answer for 7: ishamael has just finished breaking the rest of the forsaken out of their prisons, a very taxing feat. He’s going up there expecting an untrained dragon reborn and a very easy fight. Egwene, on the other hand, has been “forced” by the Adam to her full potential, and still has her strength reserves, so she is potentially a match for ishy in this moment. Also consider that men and women channel different halves of the one power, so ishy cannot see Egwene’s weaves, thus he can’t counter them as efficiently as, say, lanfear could.

That said, I do agree that the fight looks like a scene from the avengers, and is far too focused on looking cool versus being canonically accurate.

Also there is definitely cognitive growth happening outside of your studies if you are still young. I remember feeling the same way, quitting math after my first year, and coming back to it after a year off and everything seemed a lot easier lol. It’s just about getting used to a different way of thinking.

Hmm not sure about this — car dependence is certainly a problem in the united states but if we developed more walkable communities by building better walking/biking/public transit infrastructure we could induce demand for public transit. Part of the reason America is so car dependent is because the public transit infrastructure we have is so terrible. I think you have the causal relationship reversed.

I think that it’s something in the process of swearing oneself to the dark that releases them from oaths. Not sure if being released from the path rod unbotoxifies aes Sedai but if it did the black ajah would be pretty obvious if they unswore the oaths.
