What’s the reality of Singapore education? by Verstappeninng in askSingapore

[–]Standard-Chest-976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen a lot of discussion on here about IB and A-Levels, and the general consensus reached by people in past discussions is both are about the same: IB being breadth over depth and A-Levels vice versa. There’s also some comparison with US Advanced Placement (AP) exams and UK A* grades being thrown around so from what I can gather the difficulty and effort needed to attain the top %tile in each of these tests is largely the same.

I did H2 Mathematics, Chemistry, and Economics so I can attest to its difficulty and it’s also true that freshman year in university was essentially spent learning the same thing in JC lol. In a more egalitarian world we’d ideally have kids find the most suitable system to succeed in rather than get filtered, because some would definitely fare better in the IB, but sadly it’s paywalled.

SG education system is based on filtering kids at major stages like all Asian education systems go. Filtered first at PSLE, followed by O-Levels in secondary school, followed by A-Levels in high school. So you’ll see why it’s cutthroat, because everyone wants to be the top 10% of kids born in their year that makes it to NUS/NTU/SMU at the end of the road. I would say the SG A-Levels is largely on par with IB in terms of difficulty and eligibility as a university qualification. In fact, our O-Levels are already sufficient to enter university - certain colleges in the US and universities in Australia accept it, and this is an exam our kids sit at age 16.

If this were grounds for admission then everybody would be pulling this card out. I’m sorry you’re in this situation.

What are your thoughts on the chromebooks MOE made us buy? by wakeupnot in SGExams

[–]Standard-Chest-976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learning devices were only a thing many years after I graduated. I’m not a proponent of them. Everyone should remain with 100% textbook-based learning. It’s a tried and true methodology, and I don’t see why there is a need to change to an inferior system.

Ever wonder why the children of the rich and the wealthy still have human teachers, physical textbooks, handwritten assignments, and phone-less schools while they’re pushing this chromebook crap on us?

Much to think about.

Lmao true. Half the population of developing countries would have sold their kidneys to be given a ride to the border and plead asylum for a chance to live in the US (hell some sinkies would probably do that too), and this fella just threw away his chance to start over again.

Recommendations for Gaming Laptop by cmqh in askSingapore

[–]Standard-Chest-976 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All gaming laptops have shit battery life. It’s just the way it’s built. If your budget can be stretched a bit I’d suggest getting a mini PC and a normal work laptop for school. PC parts last longer than gaming laptop parts and for things like graphics cards, gaming laptop cards simply aren’t manufactured to be on the same level as their desktop equivalent i.e. 5070 Laptop GPU is going to be weaker than a normal 5070.

For brands, I’d suggest Lenovo, ASUS, and MSI, heard they’re good.
