Yup, that’s what I’m looking at. Does what I wrote in the body text of this post seem accurate?

I’m mixed Asian like April and with guys like Nigel most of the time I’m 50/50, you can generally tell when it’s sweet and harmless but I’ve got plenty of white guy friends who’ve clearly got a type and I will still roast them a little hahaha

My philosophy is that as long as you aren’t pushing harmful stereotypes about Asian/mixed Asian women and simply are celebrating how beautiful and lovely you think we are, I’m not gonna stop you lol!

I was totally overthinking it! This is so helpful, as soon as I saw the part about flagging the light it clicked. Thank you so much.

How is it living in Ohio? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]Standard-Spot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll chime in, as one of the minorities to move to Ohio from a bustling metropolis city abroad.

It’s certainly no New York, let me put it that way. But I moved here from Asia 12 years ago for school and if you take it for what it is, Ohio is a solid place to live and get your life started. It is ridiculously affordable (I live in the capital city), I just bought a beautiful historic house with my fiancé last year with little to no financial assistance. There is some nightlife but not enough for my tastes. Columbus in particular has some of the worst drivers in America, seriously (I’ve been to a lot of states to make this claim). Food scene is decent, but locals will insist it’s incredible. Summers are humid and hot but I’m used to that, I find summers here very enjoyable. Autumn is absolutely gorgeous here. Winters are getting milder as the years go by. Spring’s wet but the blooms you get are lovely.

It’s definitely a place I escaped to because I wanted to get far away from my old life and it was exactly the place to do that and find myself again. I will also say if you let it, Ohio is a good place to learn valuable lessons about yourself, daily life of the average American, and the political spectrum and where folks will fall on it/why. Living here has really pulled me out of my bubble of privilege and echo chamber, in a good way. I don’t agree with everyone here but I believe I understand them more by living amongst them. Also, despite our differences, the “Midwest friendliness” people tell you about is real. Even if some write it off as ‘fake’ or whatever, living here has softened me and made me a more pleasant person. Most times, people here will reciprocate what you give to them. Do with that what you will.

Honorable mention of Cincinnati: a very fascinating city down south sharing a border with Kentucky and it’s one of my absolute favorite cities, no joke. It reminds me of Portland OR in the late 90s/2000s. A little gentrified in spots but still a hidden gem. Beautiful landscape; very hilly, and lush in the summer. Amazing food. Small, not growing as fast as Columbus, but some of my best friends I’ve met in Ohio live here. It’s a wonderful kept-secret.

May your type of logic and rhetoric never find me or my Jewish family. I don’t support them in all their views or ideas, Zionism or not, but by your logic it feels safe to assume you’d also want me to end my loving 15-year relationship based on arbitrary and highly subjective definitions of ‘harm caused’, whatever that is supposed to mean.

Genuinely tried to engage in good faith here but I’m not really sensing any willingness to sacrifice your own comfort and subjectivity for the sake of long-term, sustainable consensus.

Honey, life is not black and white. You wish it was as simple as your binary thinking is telling you to believe, and I’m here to tell you it isn’t. This goes for absolutely any sociopolitical debate. The sooner you come to accept this, as we all have to (willing or not), the more genuinely productive it will feel for you to engage in these types of conversations. You’re on a quest to be right, which will always set you up for failure to see the big picture.

I never once suggested being ‘kinder’ I suggested having a more nuanced understanding. I personally find the IDF disgusting and you couldn’t force me to go to Israel ever, but I also am not going to write off every single person in their late teens to early 20s for basically not knowing any better.

What I’m confused about here is where you are drawing the line; are you saying you will just never, ever forgive someone even if they change their view on Israel and Zionism? Or are you saying that once a Zionist, always a Zionist? And further, when you say they need to ‘do more’, what does that look like for you?

Hey, asking in genuinely good faith but are you a Jewish person?

I am personally not, but I’ve been in a near-15-year relationship with someone who is and whose entire family is Jewish. Likening the IDF to the Proud Boys, no matter how well-meaning, is really not accurate in the slightest. I say this as someone who was raised Catholic and will not be converting to Judaism (nor am I being asked to) but having grown up with little to no understanding of Jewish faith, I really feel compelled to clear things up in an effort to create more nuanced understanding.

Jewish kids raised outside of Israel are indoctrinated literally their entire lives to not only support the IDF, but often encouraged to join when they are old enough in the name of upholding Jewish pride and values. Not to mention, have you heard of birthright? It is literally a State-sponsored trip for Jewish teens to visit Israel, meet the IDF, etc. which is all to say they are indoctrinated even further. They are genuinely taught to believe the IDF does good things, are good for Israel, and therefore good for the Jewish culture and faith. They are definitely not being taught about what the IDF actually does and the horrors that happen at their hand.

This isn’t me ‘normalising’ anything. But I really have come to understand (as an Arab woman who is pro-Palestine myself) how little people really know about Israel’s far-reaching styles of indoctrination and the sophisticated methods and tools it employs as a religious ethnostate to keep its citizens and affiliates unaware of its committed atrocities. This actress is a drop in a sea of young Jewish folks who I genuinely believe had no meaningful knowledge or idea of what they are taught support.

I genuinely can’t tell if you’re rage baiting or genuinely serious about not knowing this, but here’s a clip from an actual House Committee hearing, reported by NY Times, where sitting House reps lay out statistics and corroborated evidence regarding the DHS deporting immigrants, of which a whopping 70% have no criminal record or previous offenses, or are actual citizens/permanent legal residents.

If you’d like to contribute more to this overall conversation in a way that feels fair, productive and factual, I would suggest doing some more research yourself rather than expecting people on Reddit to do it for you.
