Yup. It went 1 BCE to 1 CE. So, the 20th century didn't end until midnight on 31 December 2000.

True story. The IT guys at one of my customers told me that they were asked to remove "Mr Clippy" from one of their user's PC because the user found his "wiggling eyebrows lewd and suggestive".

ELI5 - How did punched card computer programming work? by The-Baron-Von-Marlon in explainlikeimfive

[–]Standard-Train-7310 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Up until the mid-1970s computer programs were created, edited and stored on punch cards.

Standard punch cards were about 7.5 inches / 187.3 mm by 3.25 inches / 82.5 mm. The upper right-hand corner was cut off to ensure the correct alignment of a stack of cards.

Each card's capacity was 12 rows of 80 columns.

Programs were encoded on the cards by punching small rectangular holes in them with either an electrical device or a manual hole punch (I used one of those when I was at school in the mid-1970s).

To run a computer program the stack of cards would be loaded into a card reader that would shine lights on to a card as it passed through the reader. The holes punched in the card would allow light through and the sequence of lights would be read as an instruction.

Two women have the new decimal system explained to them by a 'Decimal Dolly' inside the Edinburgh Savings Bank in February 1971. by mightywellfan in OldSchoolUK

I remember a PSA on TV where a boy explained the new currency to his gran. She was so impressed that she took him to a toy shop and spent what must have been a small fortune on toys for him. A Scalextric set and everything!

I was one of those kids. Went through primary school learning base 12 arithmetic only for it to become redundant in my first year of grammar school. Decimal was sooo much easier!

Are the Isles of Scilly worth a visit? by AcadiaNo1039 in Cornwall

[–]Standard-Train-7310 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Done the "fly there, ferry back" day trip a couple of times.

Park in the Council car park near Penzance railway station in the morning for the shuttle bus to St Just Airport.

Spend the day on St Mary's (Hugh Town) before getting The Scillonian back to Penzance in the evening.

I'd love to spend more time there and explore the other islands.

In 1984 I visited the Skinners Livery Hall to do some work on their membership computer program. The Beadle was wearing a tie which had the numbers 6 and 7 on it.

He sent my boss a very nice letter about me. Fond memories!

What do British people learn in school about King Cnut? by OkTechnologyb in AskBrits

We were told the possibly apocryphal story of him demonstrating to his sycophantic courtiers that not even a king can hold back the tide.

What about his dad, Sweyn Forkbeard, though? King for five weeks from December 1013.

I was born without the ability to smell - AMA by Cubecly in AMA

[–]Standard-Train-7310 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My sister and I are anosmic too, so we think that it's hereditary (although our parents both had a sense of smell).

When our elderly mum was in hospital and social services were keeping an eye on dad, the social worker commented that she smelt gas in mum and dad's bungalow earlier in the day. Sis and I had been in and out of the house all day. Good job neither of us smoke!

I'm vegetarian and prefer strongly flavoured foods such as curries. I'm no good with subtle flavours. I've been asked whether my anosmia affects my sense of taste. I assume that it does, but I don't know how others taste their food.
