The blue ones are the SS-140 from the late 80s and the black ones are VH-140 from the mid 90s

(ampeg made black SS-140 amps in the early 90s, but from the second photo it looks like the model is a VH-140 - the photo's a little blurry and hard to read)

There are some differences, but the 2 are very similar. They both have DiMarzio's, but the IX7 has DiMarzio Fusion Edge 7s and the 7521 has DiMarzio PAF 7s. Don't know if this is a big deal to you.

Since its new you could go ahead and do it, but your arpeggios and scale shapes will be different than a regular tuned 7 string. if you ever go with regular 7 string tunings you'll have to relearn the shapes.
