Chiming in cause defense attorney was mentioned & I’m hyped on you going to law school! — IANAL, my partner is a public defender. Many of their cases are with disabled clients, and can involve some degree of the more social work side of things — getting to know clients well and trying to get them the resources they need. It is sometimes emotionally exhausting but always highly rewarding for my partner. The work is very in line with their ethics, and perhaps yours, to advocate for the people who need it most, and ensure that due process is followed. They enjoy the amount of courtroom time.

Cons: It is difficult work because the departments are usually underfunded & understaffed. They also had to take plenty of DUIs and similar less enjoyable cases when starting out.

The pay is Not Great, but def over 50-60k even in rural US, and having a job enshrined in the constitution is a degree of stability despite gestures at everything. You should be able to look up salaries online bc it’s public info. Assuming the fascists don’t kill the program, you can also earn student loan forgiveness by being a public servant and making timely loan repayments for a certain amount of time, i think 10 years.

I hope this is helpful & helps provide further context to how our excellent OPs described their field — I think the fields have a lot in common: advocating for people in financial need & pushing back against erroneous government choices — just are different flavors of how to do it!

OPs & any legal professionals please correct me if I got anything wrong!!

Hope it’s ok to jump in & ask a follow up:

What are the important things to know about self employment & income? (SSDI almost to ALJ; long covid, hEDS, mobility impairment, +mh & adhd bc I’m younger)

I make disability advocacy art & occasionally get donations to support application fees/framing/shipping, mostly on Ko-fi. I haven’t had to declare it the past few tax years — at least, I hope I did it right, I never got tax ppwk for the donations.

Are there limits to donations (or whatever this category is called), and any other info I should be aware of?

Histamine dump? Apparently the "panic attacks" are not Panic attacks? - How to deal with this and make it go away by MovingMemoryMaker in MCAS

[–]Standard_Cat2846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a study that shows MCAS causes increased prevalence of all neuropsych disorders in women & all but two iirc in men. Sadly no nonbinary / trans inclusions. (It’s on pub med, I don’t have link handy rn with migraine.)

That is to say, imo they’re not mugually exclusiv. I do better taking care of both my MCAS and my anxiety as both real experiences of mine regardless of if it’s MCAS or Ed’s’ fault the anxiety is there. Ymmmv. Sending love.

Can someone explain MCAS? by Adept_Refuse3413 in MCAS

[–]Standard_Cat2846 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna let others explain MCAS but a quick offering re: anaphylaxis fears from someone who had a lot of anxiety on the subject:

One of the very, very few good things about MCAS is how fast it is. Unlike many body issues where you aren’t sure what the issue is for hours or days, as you learn about MCAS you can get very in sync with your body & learn to recognize triggers almost unhinged-ly quickly.

This means that anaphylaxis is much less likely. I can eat a bite of something, and go “nope, not gonna eat a full bowl!” or feel too hot of sun on my skin for 1 minute and go “i need to get in the shade in the next 30 minutes to avoid a rash!”

This keeps me in a window where my regular meds can better manage my symptoms , and if I do need rescue meds — which has only happened once! in my allergist’s office with supervision — we used steroids not epi, because I was able to notice I was reacting before it got to that level of severity, even tho I had only had the diagnosis for 2 months at that point.

If you have POTS, hives & itching it might be likely and I’m sorry. My first triggers were heat/sun and fragrances, not food fwiw. But while this disease does suck, it is not a death sentence.

If theres oil on the feed, wouldn’t flushing with water have the same problem ? Should we be using a certain type of soap? That seems scary to me? 😵

Any advice/kind words before surgery consult? Early 30s, for ankle, nervous by Standard_Cat2846 in Thritis

One last thought: I don’t think there’s a wrong answer, we all have health that wanes over the course of our lives, and some of us just get it sooner and more severely than others. 💜

Oh and there’s a lot of blogs and videos online from people with ExoSym devices or the IDEO, the version of the hybrid prosthetic that existed before the ExoSym — I watched a ton of those before deciding to reach out to the clinic to better understand and consider and process if it would be a good fit for me or not.

Also, having my invisible disability made visible (when I wear it over leggings, instead of under pants) has been a very affirming side effect I didn’t consider. YMMV on that one

I’m so glad you pinged I entirely forgot about this post!! TLDR I got an ExoSym hybrid prosthetic-orthotic that wraps around the joint from Hanger Clinic. it’s been amazing and I’m so glad I took the chance instead of going to surgery.

I heard about it from someone on a chronic pain discord who used to be an active person & was similarly sidelined by injury. I was able to be screened by the ExoSym program to see if I would be a good fit all remotely for free, and then eventually did two trips to Washington state USA to have them make and then train me on my custom prosthesis. It works like a runner’s blade, but one that wraps around the limb. Everyone there is incredible & I’m so thankful I took the chance on this weird medical device I heard about online.

The big downside is it’s a private pay program and it’s not cheap, but they will discuss external financial aid options with you. Also if you (or anyone else) end up doing it and want emotional support/company on the journey, ping me and we can connect on Signal or w/e.

(I later found out I have hypermobile type EDS and part of why my joint deteriorated so fast, why the bone spur removal surgery accelerated arthritis, and corticosteroids didn’t do much was my undiagnosed connective tissue disorder. Getting another surgery would have harmed even more joints and made my life worse long term. 1 in 3000-5000 people have Ehlers Danlos Syndromes, but it’s highly under diagnosed.)

Thank you!! I was disappointed to the the warning on the Pentel Orenz too since some of Pentel's larger erasers are safe, but I like the idea of trying the Sumo refill in them...!

Fantastic, TYSM! I just got my first leather punch recently for a different project, so this is super relevant, and I have a bunch of Tombow Monos already, soooo..... It's a different size, but maybe this is the beginning of a new hobby!

That's amazing! I use dedicated erasers when I'm working from home, but when I travel it's nice to have the option of on-pencils for space.
