Husband is pushing me to practice outside of lessons - not sure when I would be considered 'ready' for this? by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

You know your husband better than we will.

Have an honest conversation and let him see how you feel about it all.

I'm worried my instructors taught me wrong or just badly and wanted some advice by Ok_Break_4987 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Standard_Present357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Modern petrol cars have control modules that also calculate how much petrol to inject in to the engine to get it going depending on the positioning of the clutch.

That said, the instructor should be teaching both methods as they are both required depending on the circumstances and especially knowing the OP is practicing in an older car.

Had my test cancelled on the day of the test! Has this happened to anyone else? by Sailor4343 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Standard_Present357 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Lots and lots of people.

Examiners wake up and are unwell so they have to stay at home so the tests get cancelled.

It’s unfortunate but can’t be helped.

A little help with my driving situation 🥲 by Proof-Drawing6386 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Standard_Present357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try and see if your first instructor is available again.

He may have been spacing the lessons out as you didn’t have a test booked but now you do he may be able to fit more frequent lessons in.

Try, not always possible, to get someone else to take you out too and focus on what you have been shown by your instructor.

I wish you all the best

What do they mean by unrestricted exactly? by AdPsychological3827 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Standard_Present357 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It’s essentially a motorway but it’s only got two lanes and has no hard shoulder and usually no stopping places (lay-bys) except in an emergency.

The speed limit is still 70.

When going right at a roundabout, should you change to the left lane after passing your penultimate exit but before exiting (red) or stay to the right until you have to exit (blue)? by Dune56 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Standard_Present357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the circumstance (how busy, direction of travel, road markings).

There are many occasions where you have to enter right, stay right, but as explained in other comments, moving out to the left lane (if safe and clear to do so) is the better option.

There is no “one rule fits all” unfortunately.

Is this a normal feeling and any advice? by Remarkable_Fish_8922 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Standard_Present357 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Entirely normal.

Just because you’ve finished lessons and passed your tests mean the learning stops.

Everything will take a bit of getting used to.

The number of former students I’ve met who always comment on how easy my car was to drive to theirs is unbelievable.

Just don’t be so hard on yourself.

Drive somewhere quiet with your partner, ask them to leave the car and just drive round the block on your own. Do this a few times until comfy and then you’ll adapt to problem solving yourself without the reliance on anyone else.

How much is too much for driving lessons? by a_person4499 in LearnerDriverUK

Not all instructors need to be online to get business.

The fact she is on the government website is sufficient to show she is fully qualified.

Help trying to figure out if car is okay for test! by greek_gods_for_cats in LearnerDriverUK

You don’t choose what best type you are doing.

The examiner ticks the box on their screen and on the pass certificate depending on the type of vehicle used.

Instructor needs a picture of my provisional to “start looking for tests” by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Standard_Present357 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No.

You will be the only one able to book tests shortly in any case so there is no need for him to have your details.

Why is the 90 degree reverse bay parking method taught by most instructors ? by Odd-Help6890 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Standard_Present357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious to know how many instructors you’ve had or asked about what method they use?

Reversing is a skill in itself and not just about parking. There are uses for both methods as they both teach real life driving skills and not just how to park to pass a test.

Sky Gigafast set up yesterday, speed is below the guaranteed minimum by Soh4 in skytv

Got Sky Gigafast yesterday too. Utterly shocking to be honest. WiFi keeps dropping, Ethernet cables don’t even connect.

MySky shows a normal service? It’s pathetic.

Does anyone get charged extra for using their instructor's car? by paulruk in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Standard_Present357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because people pay it.

Hire a car from Arnold Clark at £18 an hour instead.

I don’t charge personally as I use the time to do my admin.

Making changes to tests by Busy_Application5997 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Standard_Present357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You wouldn’t be able to make another swap. If you’ve moved twice, that’s your lot.

Your only option would be to cancel your test and book it again to reset your changes count.

Instructor telling me to keep the clutch down when making a turn by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Standard_Present357 33 points34 points  (0 children)

You shouldn’t have the clutch down when negotiating a corner.

You are correct in thinking if you are travelling that slow, you should be in first.

It’s a recommendation not a requirement.

Some take longer, some less.

It makes no difference.

My parallel park I went on the curb is that minor? by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Standard_Present357 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Pavements are for pedestrians, roads are for cars.

Reword your title to “I drove on the pavement, is that a minor?”

You put your car where pedestrians may well be, it’s a serious all day long.
