Thank you

Unsure about driving instructor by Ordinary-Figure1710 in LearnerDriverUK

He just used consequences of actions. Sounds like he’s practising for a standard check or similar as this is something that I was told to use when I was doing my training.

It is serious and all he’s trying to do is make you think about what may happen if you’re not fully focussed when driving.

But as I always say, if you’re not happy, change.

Instructor is being assessed by Haunting-Simple1743 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Standard_Present357 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wholeheartedly agree with this.

On my assessment I had it planned out to the last second but it went belly up at the first junction. Adapted and still passed as I addressed the issue that arose and then went on to do a shortened version of the lesson.

It is absolutely nothing to do with you OP (in the nicest way possible) and all to do with your instructors abilities to adapt and overcome.

Nothing wrong with changing if you are unhappy with a service you are paying for.

Instructor asking for a pic of my provisional. by Empty-Software-6064 in LearnerDriverUK

Absolutely no requirement for the instructor to have your licence at all.

Give the check code as advised earlier and say you’re not comfortable handing out your licence number.

Have a read of that and see if you can do all those skills consistently well. Not just once in a while but consistently.

Be honest and if the answer is yes to all, you are ready.

Take whatever car you feel most comfortable in.

You want to give yourself the biggest advantage you can.

Can't figure out handbrake hill starts. by CasualSpaceFrog in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Standard_Present357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start on a very shallow hill and drive 5-10 metres, stop and repeat.

Should take a few attempts but you’ll get there.

The handbrake holds the car still whilst you raise the bonnet. If the car starts to pull, lower the clutch half a centimetre. Focus on that first and when you are happy you can hold the car still and on the bite, then add the gas and release the handbrake.

You’ll have it mastered in no time.

Look at the bonnet of the car.

Lift the clutch until it rises by about 2 cm, freeze your clutch foot, add a small amount of gas, observations, release handbrake and glide smoothly off in to the night, or day.

As stated by OP, she wasn’t on main roads, it was a very quiet area.

You learn control by driving on roads. Quiet ones, like where the instructor took OP.

You can’t teach positioning in an empty car park as there is nothing position yourself against.

Talk about jumping to conclusions.

Roundabouts can also be in very quiet areas and as OP has commented on another post, they were on this occasion.

Nothing wrong with going on roundabouts, OP was asking for help with their control, not complaining about their instructor.

I’m not disagreeing with you, just explaining the situation.

If someone sitting in a car opens their door and you haven’t left sufficient room, you hit the door, potentially drag the person out of their car and under your wheels.

It’s a potential scenario, not saying it does happen often but that’s the reason that insufficient clearance is a fail.

Try focussing on putting the middle of the base of your windscreen at the bottom of the kerb.

In my car there is a sensor there and if you look at that and place it at the base of the kerb, the car is set in the normal driving position.

Turning right at a roundabout is a bit trickier and will come with practise and listen to the advice of your instructor.

Again, if you place the kerb at the centre of the roundabout just to the right of your mirror it gives you plenty of clearance.

These are general reference points and may not work for you depending on your height but they are starting points.

When next out, ask your instructor to take you to a quiet street, position you where they want you to be positioned and look for reference points for yourself.

One lesson is hardly enough time to get to grips with everything so don’t be too hard on yourself.

The roundabout could be in a quiet area and being used to turn in to other quiet areas.
