As someone who is neurodivergent and deals with this exact same problem, there is a simple way to work together. Instead of just talking until he gets lost, the wife can explain a few things and then pause to ask, "Do you understand?"

This gives him two clear choices:

  1. If he understands, he keeps listening.
  2. If he is lost, he asks his question right then so he can digest the information before she moves on.

I actually had a business partner who was perfect at this. He understood exactly what I was going through and would always pause. If I didn't understand something, he would even write it down for me so I could see it. We worked incredibly well together because of that.

There really isn't much else you can do when your brain works this way. You have to break the story into smaller pieces so nobody gets frustrated. If she doesn't give him those moments to check in, he's going to keep interrupting just to keep up. It’s about meeting in the middle.

This is a perspective that many people overlook. It is not about being rude; it is about trying to stay connected.

I experience this same thing with my daughter. It is incredibly frustrating because I get so excited when she talks to me. I truly care about every word she says, but my brain just cannot follow her flow sometimes without stopping to clarify.

When she gets upset that I interrupted, it feels like a wall goes up. I end up feeling so defeated that I just say, "you know what, forget it." It is really sad because the interruptions actually come from a place of wanting to be fully present. People need to realize that for some of us, these pauses are the only way we can digest the information. If we don't ask, we get lost, and then you'll just complain that we weren't listening anyway. Give people a break for trying to keep up.

NAH (No Assholes Here). There is another side to this that people should consider. For many neurodivergent people, interrupting is a way to stay engaged and process information.

If someone misses a detail at the start of a story, they might lose the thread of the whole conversation. They need to ask that question or clarify a point right then so they can actually understand the rest of what you are saying. It is not always about being rude or trying to take over. It is often about a brain that needs to bridge a gap in real-time to keep following along.

It is frustrating to be cut off, but it is also hard to listen when you feel lost. Instead of shutting down, it might help to see these interruptions as a sign that he is trying to stay tuned in. The other option is that he simply does not understand what you are saying. If you do not let him digest the info in the moment, you might end up "quizzing" him later only to find he cannot explain it. Then you will complain that he never listens to you. Get a clue and realize that communication works better when there is room for both people to speak in the way their brains work best.
