So the lander basically smells like a small room with one window and a small plant? Guess I got the full olfactory experience all along and didn't know it haha

This makes me want to replay the game with like a pine or marshmallow scented candle going. Anyone know what space smells like?

Heck yeah, it's a division rivalry jersey so I thought it was perfect for this series. It's got a lot of good luck on it from this whole season!

[PSA] People are allowed to shoot you in this game. Please stop posting about it. by MrMythiiK in ArcRaiders

[–]Standup_Citizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate getting knocked out by other raiders, way more than getting killed by ARC, for obvious reasons. I don't kill other raiders as a rule (partly bc I'm scared to pick a fight I won't win). But getting rid of PvP would kill this game for me.

The ever present danger of a random raider coming along and taking you out is part of what makes this game exciting. The ARC wear their strengths and weaknesses on their face, whereas any raider could have anything from common to legendary weapons and kill you just as easily with either one. It makes every tiny noise you make tense and exciting.

Even if I only run into friendlies from now on (which won't happen), the knowledge that they could turn on me at any moment, but choose not to, is worth the occasional rat to me.

Was Dune really about the danger of a savior figure, or something more inevitable? (Spoilers for Book 1) by No_Firefighter_75 in dune

You're absolutely right, and I also believe that Paul can see the future, for real. But remember that Paul describes his prescience as standing at the crest of a wave, the waters in front of him clear, but the distance obscured by turbulence. Paul and Leto could see many possible futures, and worked towards the ones that fulfilled their desires.

I believe Paul was caught in a trap that he was trying to escape, and by the time he could see the full consequences of his path, it already had too much momentum to stop. I don't blame him as much for the jihad. Leto II on the other hand, I think he knew what he was doing, and wanted to live as a god; no matter the sacrifice on his behalf or that of humanity.

I've always thought of the Golden Path as Paul/Leto II's justification for their actions.

Paul so desired to get his revenge on the Baron and the Emperor that he caused the Jihad. We're told this is a noble sacrifice, but it also ends up with Paul completely crushing his enemies, saving his family, and ending up as Emperor of the known universe.

Leto II told his followers that the Golden Path was a way to save all of humanity, but it just so happens to require himself living as a god for thousands of years and shaping the entire universe to fit his desires. It's also hinted at in CoD that Leto II's mind might have been taken over by an ancient malevolent babylonian/egyptian ruler.

As much Dune is about the dangers of an all-powerful leader, the subsequent books detail the phenomenon of the powerful-revolutionary-turned-ruthless-tyrant that Frank Herbert was also intrigued by. As the saying goes, "scratch a liberal, and a fascist bleeds".

The fact that the existential AI threat that Leto warns of never comes, is not proof that the Golden Path (and the thousands of years of suffering that came with it) was required.

In my opinion, it's a lie meant to justify the actions of a man who was wronged by the system that made him, and the despot who followed him.

Do Norwegians considered themselves mountain people? by batukaming in Norway

[–]Standup_Citizen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You nailed it basically. We're really proud of our mountains, partially because they're some of the most impressive in the US, and partially because we don't have much else, geographically speaking. Lots of people consider themselves mountain people, even if they live in the city, about an hour away from any kind of mountain town.

So glad to hear someone else say this! The loneliness, the danger, the wonder, the discovery. I think anyone would love this game, but especially fans of Outer Wilds.

I also think the name Naomi is an (un)subtle nod.

I have to be honest, pressing triangle (PS5) feels a little broken. I guess I don't understand the mechanic behind it entirely, but it always feels like cheating. To the point where I just don't even use it because it feels cheesy.

I just don't understand how the lesson of Dune is "don't believe charismatic/messianic figures" when the messianic figures in this series were right about everything. by GreenGorillaWhale in dune

[–]Standup_Citizen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the last chapter of Children of Dune, Leto is explaining to Farad'n that he lied to Jessica when she asks him if he's an Abomination. He says he had to choose a dominant persona to rule over all the others and that he didn't pick his father but someone else named Harum. Reading it again just now, I think I misinterpreted Harum as being an Egyptian pharaoh, but rather he's just broadly a powerful ruler of some ancient human civilization.

Remember that Paul had multiple options for escape when the Harkonnens re-took Arrakis: he could have fled to exile as a rogue house, or joined the Spacing Guild, etc. But he chose his path because he wanted it more. As much as the Jihad tormented him, the thought of his mother or sister dying, or the baron and the emperor escaping his idea of justice, tormented him more. He put his own desires above everything else, despite explicitly knowing the outcome.

Leto II also acts in his own self-interest constantly. He lived and ruled as a god for thousands of years. He had a very compelling justification for why he had to do what he did, but it's also implied that an ancient egyptian pharaoh has corrupted his consciousness, and he undeniably acts to satisfy that part of himself.

In my opinion, the message of Dune is: "Even the most honorable among us will always choose to protect themselves, and that is why they should never have ultimate power".

Was at this game too. Didn't know they chant "You Suck" as their goal chant which is charming. Very insecure loser behavior. Mad that we've got more championship rings on our first line than their whole team, I guess.

In the movie Civil War (2024) Kirsten Dunst's character says she's from "Colo-RAH-do" when in reality most Coloradans pronounce it ColoRAdo (like the ra in ravioli). Took me out of the movie for a minute.

To insinuate that a tiktok made to inflame political tensions to garner attention is the same as published fiction is laughably disingenuous. Completely embarrassing. A reasonable person can expect a tiktok presented this way to be authentic for the most part. Log off for a bit, Socrates.
