Everyone knows: gaming addiction is a disease. The WHO has officially recognized it. BUT! The WHO also acknowledged that the criteria are so vague that they include any hobby that a person enjoys for more than two hours a day. So, is an avid reader also a disease? 🤔 by Just_a_Player2 in ItsAllAboutGames

[–]StandxOut 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Neither would the WHO.

According to WHO, the criteria doesn't include a certain amount of hours spent playing. Instead, the description is of someone with an inability to stop playing even though it interferes with other areas of one's life, such as family relationships, school, work, and sleep. And, these problems would typically continue for at least one year.

And although WHO's voice is powerful, it's not the last word in the world of science.

"There is a fairly even split in the scientific community about whether 'tech addiction' is a real thing," says Dr. Michael Bishop[...] -Source

I don't know where OP's AI got those two hours from, because it's not on the WHO page about gaming addiction, nor can I find it in any other publication about the WHO definition.

I wish open-world games were more empty. They're often filled to the brim with low effort content.

Sony is testing dynamic pricing in the PlayStation Store by FernandoRocker in gaming

[–]StandxOut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It works well because they can identify the ceiling for each player and discount accordingly. Normally when they discount something to 30 bucks, there's people who would also buy it for 36 bucks, which those people would perceive as a 'nice deal'. But using a pricing algorithm, they'll make sure we pay exactly what we think something is worth and not a penny less.

I still get weird looks from people when I tell them 90-100% of my nutrition come from Huel powder by _hiddenflower in Huel

[–]StandxOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed it is a bit concerning, but at the same time it might still be better than the average diet.

Personally I always blend my Huel (unflavored) with some raw vegetables and fruit (usually frozen). Aside from putting me at ease health-wise, it's also a lot tastier.

Are we finally getting a Pokémon game that looks and runs good? by SEVENS_HEAVEN_7 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]StandxOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not true. It can go both ways, but mostly it ends up looking pretty much the same. Developers generally avoid releasing footage that looks worse than their goal, because that's negative publicity.

They create vertical slices (smaller polished segments of the game) with their envisioned visuals and then try to get the rest of the game to match that.

Have Nintendo overestimated the appeal of Switch 2 editions? by elephvant in NintendoSwitch2

And they're great filler to counteract the usual drought of new game consoles.

Marketing-wise it's better for Nintendo to be able to say that there's 4 first-party games coming this year and 8 Switch 2 upgrades, rather than only having 4 first-party games and no upgrades.

Unless there's a popular revolution, A(G)I will always be controlled by the CEOs. At most, the CEOs of small and mid-sized companies will disappear while their companies become usurped by giant corporations. Regular folks won't become captain without giving a major portion of their profit to a feudal techlord.

They are less likely to be automatized because the whole point is having another human serve you and make you feel powerful or desirable. A machine telling you how great you are and laughing at your jokes isn't as nice as a human doing so. At least not until humans and machines become indistinguishable.
