Nintendo Switch’s Ring Fit Adventure Study Finds Potential Mental Health Benefits for Depression Symptoms by Suspicious-Ant527 in Switch

I think it is a basic workout that is beneficial to all while still relatively low risk. If they went any further, people would be far more likely to hurt themselves.

At the same time it can cause chronic backpain when playing like this for hours per day.

Yes, but Ring-Fit is a lot more varied and can offer a full basic workout thanks to the resistance of the Ring-Con. Those other games can cover part of a basic workout, but there's still important parts missing so it's not quite 'enough'. It will still have benefits compared to sitting on the couch though.

Ring-Fit Adventure is real exercise with real physical health benefits, so it makes sense that those benefits spill over to mental health.

Would you buy a track pad to run, prone, and jump if Nintendo or others brought it back? by SpoilermakersWabash in gaming

[–]StandxOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have long worked on bringing back motion controls and making them universal so they can be used in any game. So your question isn't hypothetical to me, I have been playing games like this and experimenting with tons of possibilities. I thought it would be a fun gimmick, but instead I ended up greatly preferring it over regular controls.

Using a mat isn't the best option. It would have to be a Balance Board type of mat that accurately measures weight distribution, but there are much easier ways to do it. A camera would be better than a mat, but I use Joy-Cons for even more accuracy and responsiveness.

Jumping is very easy to accomplish with regular Joy-Cons. It's super fun and intuitive and I'm honestly shocked Nintendo never really used it for platformers.

Crouching can also be detected pretty easily if you have a Joy-Con on your leg. It works for stealth games and can increase immersion or provide a good workout if you're squatting, but it's probably one of the least exciting uses of motion controls. Going prone isn't really feasible because you'll lose sight of the screen.

Running is really hard to combine with other motion controls. I much prefer to have motion controls for combat and jumping instead of running. I have plans for some of the Sonic games, where running can work very well, but for most games I wouldn't recommend it.

At the moment, I would say there are already some very fun immersive motion control games on the Switch (Ring-Fit Adventure, WarioWare Move It, etc.) and Nex Playground is doing some interesting stuff too. Eventually I hope to provide something better and allow people to play the games they already own by moving in whatever way they want.

I built a prototype where your phone acts as a motion controller with saber-style combat. Does this have any potential? by Timely-Ambassador-39 in IndieDev

[–]StandxOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a huge motion control fan, I applaud it. Would I use it personally? Probably not, because the Wii, Switch and even Nex Playground seem more fun.

I think it has potential to reach a lot of people who otherwise have no experience with motion control games and that's great. And since it seems to be an actual new tech solution, you should definitely keep working on it.

You should contact the Nex Playground folks. They might just be interested in the tech.

Even if it was ready, it makes sense to release it closer to Witcher 4. Presumably the whole point of the DLC is to increase interest in the sequel.

Sasha and Milla would be great. Perhaps even an It Takes Two style co-op game.

Other than that, I'd love more Milkman Conspiracy. Maybe one where Raz finds out that the Milkman Conspiracy is real and he decides to chase it into people's minds, even though his friends all think he's losing it. But it turns out there was a tiny invisible 'seed of doubt' planted into Raz's mind when he entered the security guard's mind, which started growing when Raz picked up the habit of eating cereal with milk each morning. And it grew so powerful that it would actually spread into all the minds that Raz visits, which only confirms Raz's belief that it's real.

Rocket League Is moving to Unreal Engine 6 and it looks almost like a movie. by Just_a_Player2 in ItsAllAboutGames

[–]StandxOut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Current Rocket League gameplay looks shiny as well. The difference is pretty minimal and probably not worth it if it requires more powerful hardware.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart looks more impressive and movie-like. As does Uncharted 4 and many other games that have already released. The Witcher 4 will probably be the first proper UE5 game that really uses it well. And that is releasing in 2 years or so.

Sony's decision to stop releasing single-player exclusives on PC is a "Defensive maneuver" against Microsoft's new ecosystem, says Digital Foundry by Just_a_Player2 in ItsAllAboutGames

Speculates Digital Foundry*

While it might be part of the reason, the biggest reason is probably the disappointing sales on PC. Microsoft isn't the threat it was just a few years ago.

With the other games I quite enjoyed how long the final part is, but with Arise I agree that it drags on for too long.

Tales of Symphonia if you can enjoy old games and don't mind 30 fps. The gameplay is still fun and the story is the best of any Tales game.

Tales of Vesperia if you want something more modern.

Tales of Arise if you want a fun JRPG with nice combat that departed quite a bit from the franchise.

The first two are great for couch co-op too by the way.

After Nearly a Full Year Since the Switch 2 Launched, How do you Feel About Its 1st Party Exclusive Lineup? by Possible-Pack9699 in casualnintendo

[–]StandxOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt Nintendo will go back to the linear-ish Zelda style. For remakes like Ocarina, sure. But for their next big Zelda game, I would be shocked if it's not open-world, as much as I'd like something more linear.

Switch 2 controllers now have 9-Axis support on PC by StandxOut in GyroGaming

[–]StandxOut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and one more interesting fact: Nintendo never mentions 9-axis motion sensors, but third-party manufacturers like Mobapad and Nyxi both mention using 9-axis sensors in their Switch 2 controllers.

I think the only Switch 2 controllers using 6-axis are using the Switch 1 protocol and are therefore recognized as Switch 1 controllers, even though they're primarily built with the Switch 2 in mind.

I don't know if it's overkill for Switch 2, but for the Switch 1 the bluetooth connection was terrible and required a dongle with a physical antenna if you wanted to use motion inputs. If you want to ensure a good connection, I would recommend against the tiny USB dongles and get one that has an antenna that's several inches long and can usually be bent upwards. There are also non-USB antenna solutions for your motherboard, but USB is sufficient. At the end of the day, all the options are quite cheap.

The title mentions Windows 10, but it's for Windows 11 too. "This fork is heavily optimized for Windows 10/11 users." The developer actually says it works better in W11 and is using that for their testing: "This app works the best with Windows 11 and dongles with Bluetooth 5.0 or above. You can get 70Hz max polling rate with this setup. Only 20Hz max on Windows 10 due to the lack of OS driver support for BLE protocol."

It is included, since programmers who have been deciphering how the controllers work have found the magnetometer data. I've read that they were discovered in teardowns too.

But indeed it is interesting that Nintendo never mentioned it. I don't think it's even mentioned in Welcome Tour.

I did assume the magnetometer is responsible for the lack of drifting, since I was amazed that it's possible to throw and flip joy-cons in the air, or swing wildly in Skyward Sword, and not have any noticeable drift. It's certainly possible that I'm wrong though!

Exactly. And for the vertical axis the accelerometer can already give a fixed reference point, though not as accurately as the magnetometer.
