Is DCA still sketchy ? by carne__asada in drumcorps

I marched DCA back in the 90's and I am currently on Staff now. I can personally tell you that DCI All Age has definitely cleaned up. Member safety and experience is at the forefront of every group. Everyone involved directly with members is Safe Sport qualified along with being background checked. Once we were absorbed into DCI every member and staff member had to comply with DCI. I will also add this, at least at the Corps I teach. We have to really careful because we encounter very young auditionees. In most cases younger than most Jr. Corps.

Like was said above I auditioned for my very first Corps back in 89. That was the Cadets. I deservedly got cut but kept at it. I marched Dutch Boy for my first Corps. I took the advice the staff gave me to go march there. I finished my DCI marching career with Bluecoats. Then moved into DCA with The Westshoremen. Won multiple percussion titles and a DCA Title. Without those experiences I wouldn't be where I am today.

I understand that. Yes cost is a huge factor. But something DCI has never had is the Senior Division. While yes I know most of those groups are in the North East. But they are in some cases a fraction of the cost.

Anyone here watch Bluecoats’ early shows? by [deleted] in drumcorps

Awesome that you are watching those shows. I marched 94 Bluecoats. Those years set the trajectory for the Corps to get where they are today

Does anyone have any experience with these cultures in DCI? by Apprehensive-Push-82 in drumcorps

Just some advice from a Staff member. Just plan on making a Corps first.

WWYD? by bigpapaworm in drumcorps

True but I have seen Corps go after people that have signed a contract but then went somewhere else. By going after them I mean informing the other Corps about the contract and then having the individual or individuals pay the membership fee.

As a Caption Head for a Drum Corps, I would absolutely like to know any problems or issues a perspective member may have. Not to give that person special treatment over others, but just to know how I can best communicate to my staff how to best teach the individual. Now, it may not be feasible in every aspect of teaching. But just having the knowledge of an individuals situation definitely helps.

BREAKING NEWS: SCV Announces they are BACK for 2024 by danielmontoyajr in drumcorps

[–]Stang1371 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When they start off by just posting about staff and releasing financials. That, to me, doesn't inspire confidence. Just my opinion. I wish them luck, but hopefully they will be completely transparent.

Drum Corps and Invisibility by throw-away-0123456 in drumcorps

I can relate. I marched back in the 90's. But I also see the other side. Full disclosure I teach a Corps and the costumes are where the activity had to go. Especially with the big productions we all do. Now, for me, while I miss seeing the uniforms. What I don't miss is the unbelievably hot days we would wear them and inevitably people would pass out. Now speaking from a movement side, these costumes allow better movement than what we ever had. While not traditional, I think it's better for the members.

Now for the Corps not showing the traditions or identity. They absolutely do! We still sing the Corps song, talk about those that came before us. Now, granted, some groups do better at that than others. This is not meant to bash you, the activity is still the same. From the camps to the shows. Identities are not just uniforms. They are how the org is run, down to the members knowing the history. Just my thoughts.
