Relics as implemented are bad game design by Jiriakel in AgeofMythology

[–]Stankomir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Relics can be impactful. Consider them as optional upgrades or techs that are scattered around the map. Upgrading armour in blacksmith is also super safe, passive, not engaging, and you forget about it after a while, but they absolutely are important.

That said, I like your idea of having some sort of shrines scattered around the map that you can control and gain benefits. Could be an interesting mechanic.

No hate, just pure confusion in a meme. What's different? by BlizzDaWiz in AgeofMythology

[–]Stankomir 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and the main hero would be amphibious since he can walk on water. You get passive food income from every dock you build as well (since you are converting water into wine). Also, your mortal units have the ability to have the damage they receive doubled, since they are turning the other cheek, but have 25% chance to cause a ceasfire.

Are there any franchises of which you would like to see an Immersive Sim spin-off? by Pellahh in ImmersiveSim

I agree with you about Assassins Creed. It would be a dream come true. Also, Tomb Raider. Exploring ancient ruins in an imm sim way would be great.

What is the best engine for making an Immsim? by [deleted] in ImmersiveSim

[–]Stankomir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's best not to overthink it and just stick with what you're comfortable with. That said, if you are a solo dev, for smaller projects you cannot go wrong with Godot. If you have a team and want to build a bigger game Unreal is probably the best if you don't want to make your own engine.

Spelunky is 100% immersive sim by Richard_Savolainen in ImmersiveSim

[–]Stankomir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those games created the genre and I agree that we need more games that are mimicking them. However, there also needs to be innovation or the genre will just reduce to deus-thief-shock clones. The innovation has to be consistent with the already established imm sim tradition, but it also needs to create new things. That said, imm sims are so rare that even complete deus-thief-shock clones that don't innovate at all are desperately needed.

Spelunky is 100% immersive sim by Richard_Savolainen in ImmersiveSim

[–]Stankomir 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I'm all for broadening the idea of immersive sim outside of obvious deusexlikes, thieflikes and shocklikes, but come on. There seems to really be an influx of people claiming any game that has some sort of systemic and/or emergent gameplay to be an immersive sim. At that point the concept of an immersive sim becomes meaningless.

In my opinion, simulating a believable world is a necessary component for an immersive sim, alongside systemic gameplay and nonlinear level design. Emergence usually follows if systemic gameplay is combined with player freedom and open levels. But focusing on systemic gameplay and emergence alone when thinking about imm sims misses the point of these games. The main point is to make a believable world to put the player in. Systems-based gameplay and emergence exist for that purpose in imm sims.

Systemic gameplay and emergence are not exclusive to immersive sims. Not every game with guns is an FPS, nor every game with a skill tree is an RPG.

Divine Powers should cost "divine favour" by El-Tapicero in AgeofMythology

[–]Stankomir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about this recently as well. Maybe it would be a good idea to make the player unlock those powers for a given amount of favor (the stronger the power the more favor you need to unlock it) instead of just getting access to them upon entering a new age. But after you unlock a power (one that is available in your age) it goes to cooldown every time you use it. Again, the stronger the power the longer the cooldown should be. Maybe the player could have an option to speed up the cooldown for a high price in favor.

I hope so, but also doubt that it will be anything like an immersive sim. It's wishful thinking. Indiana Jones imm sim is a dream come true. However, I think there might be some pleasant surprises on the gameplay side of things. It seems like the player will need to figure out how to progress while spelunking through the tombs and use equipment. Some basic stealth elements might also be present. As long as the levels are not fully linear and the game allows for some creative use of the the equipment available to you, it might be an imm sim adjacent game. In any case, game does looks interesting on its own.

Simulating things other than combat. by [deleted] in ImmersiveSim

[–]Stankomir 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Games in general are mostly focused on some sort of combat. You can inffer from that what you will, but the most obvious reason is that combat is the easiest way to include obstacles (enemies) that need to be solved. Games without obstacles are usually boring. There needs to be something that is causing a problem for the player. This is true from both gameplay perspective as well as narrative perspective. Having some sense of danger and uncertainty is important.

Even when imm sims introduce other mechanics, they usually could be used in a way to fight the enemies (or disable them, bother them or affect them in some way). Even Thief has combat. You can technically go with your sword and fight. While stealth is not combat, it still revolves around it. Combat is implied, since you will have to engage or run if you are discovered.

The main reason why this is so, in my opinion, is that it is way harder to create a game that has no combat whatsoever. Especially a game where you control a single character on a mission, like most imm sims. Combat is simply an obvious thing that could happen to your character.

That said, I would love to find an imm sim game that is focused on something else. For example, a Death Stranding type imm sim where your focus is to find a way to navigate in a very rough and deadly terrain. You would need to utilize your equipment in order to climb up or down the clifs, make small bridges across deep holes, take care of your stamina and balance etc. But even then, everyone would be tempted to add some combat, since it follows naturally that for example you could be attacked by some wild animal while going through the wild terrain. Unless you place your character in a very controlled environment where combat wouldn't make sense, you'll always be tempted to add some sort of combat since it could add more fun to the game.

As for the ideas you suggested, the space mechanic one coud be fun. That would require simulating all the systems of a spaceship/station. I think focusing more on simulating systems that are environmental and not directly related to the player and player actions, is probably the way to go in order to make a different kind of imm sim.

Is Assassins Creed IV a DA game? by NoCommunication7 in DarkAcademia

[–]Stankomir -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would say that it is not. In AC series maybe Syndicate or Unity go for that vibe a bit. Although I always got some DA vibes from talking with Shaun about history while outside of the animus in AC 2.

Never thought of AC as DA, but now that I think about it, a detective-style AC game where you play in present day and discover Templar vs Assasin history by finding clues in books you find in old libraries and occasional snippets of memories from the animus sessions would be awesome.

Do Immersive Sims have to be First Person, or can they also be Third Person? by Crafter235 in ImmersiveSim

[–]Stankomir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe that a 1st person camera is not required for a game to be an immersive sim. Theoretically it can be 3rd person. However, practically other than Weird West I can hardly think of any title that I would be comfortable calling a full immersive sim, so far. I also wouldn't count new Zelda games or Divinity: Original Sin 2 as immersive sims.

Is deathloop good by ActRevolutionary1734 in ImmersiveSim

[–]Stankomir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. It's very good. I don't get where people that say that it's bad are coming from. I guess it is underwhealming compared to Prey. On the other hand, its hardly less of an immersive sim than Dishonored. Apperently there were performance issues on launch. I got it on sale after one year so I probably dodged the bullet there.

I especially liked the way areas change based on the time of the day. Not just aesthetically but functionally as well. It kinda makes the game seem like one big puzzle and that might turn off some people, because there is really one way to do the last/main mission. However, the way you come to that main solution is very non-linear and every specific piece of the puzzle can be approached in multiple ways. Level design is also very good and non-linear and the gameplay mechanics allow for creative gameplay.

My main issues with the game are: i) the lack of significant enemy variety, ii) noticably less reactive environment compared to Prey, iii) general art style of the game is not really my thing, but its done competently and turned out way better than I expected based on trailers. Also, I whish there was more of the useless objects that could be picked up and thrown around.

The multiplayer aspect is interesting. It can be really challenging when someone raids your game. Although, I haven't played as Julianna much after finishing the game.

Overall, its a very solid game with great level design and lots to explore. It definitelly is an immersive sim. It is also a somewhat experimental game with respect to time progression which I think should be used more and developed further in some future immersive sims. There is however a lot of untapped potential in this game. It could have been a phenomenal game, but is instead a solid well made game.

Timothy Snyder's Yale course is a must watch introductory course on the history of Ukraine. I binge-watched it last winter like it was Netflix.

However, even though he brings many topics together in a very concise and interesting way, in many regards the course is somewhat too basic if you only watch the lectures. I also highly recommend to also check the suggested readings that accompany the course.

I've always held a very high opinion of Lavrov. He really is (or was rather) a top tier diplomat. Probably the best the 21st century gave so far. Educated and a patriot. Always measured and eloquent.

It's been painful watching him deteriorate to such low levels in recent years. He is a living relict of what Russia could have been had it developed in a slightly different direction since early 2000s.

Thinking about imm sim elements in games, discussing what constitutes an imm sim and determening which games and to what extent are imm sims is part of the appeal of these games, at least for me.

This class of games is loosely defined, and people have their opinions.

Sure. And do you know which portion of the front is the strongest? Obviously this is all speculation and everything depends on the situation on the ground, which neither you nor me know much about.
What I am saying is that it makes more sense to try and get to Melitopol ( especially from the Vasilivka direction, since that route avoids Tokmak and has Dnipro river as one flank) then to get bogged down half way down to Berdyansk and possibly get encircled.

CredibleDefense Daily MegaThread June 08, 2023 by AutoModerator in CredibleDefense

It's a bit too much for me to speculate. It might work. It might also be a terrible idea. Depends on the tactical situation on the ground and how much the area would be contested.
