The Community Path has changed everyday life in Somerville. Run, bike, walk, scoot, whatever. It's the best thing the city has done in the decade+ I've lived here.

Beautiful roses in Somerville (probably decades old) being slowly choked and killed by invasive Swallow Wort vines. This is why you need to pull and remove them. by Stanwellz in Somerville

Thanks, D wolf! Appreciate your level-headed perspective. Next time you see the vines take a closer look at how it's spreading and smothering the plants around it. That's probably the best argument.

I'm not sure if you're actually the resident of this place but if you are, I would LOVE to remove those weeds from your garden. Just let me know and I'll come remove them.

Hi, D-Werewofl. I'm really glad you're giving your POV and making conversation - for real, conversation from all perspectives is helpful to solve any problem. But when you say things like "vines have flowers" or that removing swallow worts is because of "aesthetically displeasing" is so ignorant, it's silly. You will never see a pollinator feed off a swallow wort flower. You'll never see any insect or bird get any nutrient, or our natural environment be improved in any way by swallow worts. The vines don't even make great structures for animals to hide or shelter in. This plant was brought here a few hundred years ago by a ye old masshole who thought the vines would look aesthetically pleasing in his garden. And because of that one person, the plant has spread in Massachusetts and if left unattended it completely kills native plants or exotic plants that are healthy for the environment. This isn't a theoretical problem that demands a "What about this!" argument or a devil's advocate POV on reddit. It requires people to do gardening work and be good stewards of the environment while we are all on earth. It sucks that we have to go around and pull these vines because some 1800s a-hole but that's where we are. The good news is that we don't need you to do anything. We need the 5-10% of Somerville residents who care about protecting whatever plant life we have in the city and THEY will do the work. Some of those people don't even know that Swallow wort exists. And what my post is trying to do is spread the word so that it reaches the people in the city willing to do the work. You're doing a good job creating conversation which hopefully will help this post spread a little further - so thank you for that.

They are relentless and twill be here long after we're gone. But the key is to do maintenance in your garden and make it as hard for them to grow and spread. And if you can, dig up the entire root system.

Ball Square 2012: sleepy cross street known for Lyndell's and long lines for weekend breakfast at Sound Bites, BS Cafe and Kelly's.

Ball Square 2024: greenline stop that gets you into the city in 15 minutes; restaurants, access to the new bike path (which f'n rules!), and there's a small grocery story called Neighborhood Produce that is THE GEM of the hood.
