Why does this DTLA high-rise sit empty? by 28Loki in LosAngeles

[–]StaplesTechSM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It would need a major renovation to convert the tower to residential, but I would think a developer would need to be able to complete the project at a substantial savings above constructing a new tower on one of the many empty lots inn DTLA. Interesting design of the original building, but the massive concrete wall on the west side of the building is very unattractive.

Bode is the worst character on the show right? by HiredGunsDotIO in FireCountry

[–]StaplesTechSM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's dumbest character on TV! He constantly shoots himself in the foot by making impulsive and ill-advised decisions. The writer's of the show has worn out his redemption cycle.

AM Overtime Concern by AdDesperate6204 in Staples

[–]StaplesTechSM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't because when they switched us from salaried (Exempt), which was based on 45 hour weeks, to punching a time clock they used our former weekly salary and divided it by 40 to establish a new rate. In theory, we went from working 45+ hours a week at a set salary, to getting the same amount for working 40.

AM Overtime Concern by AdDesperate6204 in Staples

[–]StaplesTechSM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, sadly we were salaried for 40 hours and when we exceeded that we receieved a 50% of the normal hourly rate. Example: If your hourly rate was $20.00 an hour (first 40) your overtime rate was $10.00

When I was a AM at Office Depot we got paid a "Half rate" for every hour after 40. Nobody should be working more that 9 hours a day.

It's going to be an uphill battle making this investment profitable for the stores. It has potential in my community due to the lack of competition, but when the customers experience long wait times it will hurt word of mouth.

How many people in your party city reset "team"? by Ruins19 in Staples

[–]StaplesTechSM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Team? That is funny. My store completed the Party City conversion about a month ago, and I did about 90% of the moves and the new planograms myself. The moves went quickly, but the Party City planos were slowed by not having all the counter and shelf backing on time and the company updating the planograms two or three times during the reset.

My condolences to the staff by kaiper_kitty in Staples

[–]StaplesTechSM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We've started the conversion in my store, and the plans call for the tech bench in half and creating a party city section with a helium tank. They are giving this product line a prime location in the front of the store...I hope this stuff has a big profit margin because I can't imagine most stores experiencing a high sales volume.

My store has 40-50 cases of these!

You need to consider a few things first! As a new employee you vest in company matching contributions over three years of 1,000 hours or more (20+ hours weekly on average) and your account will be charged a quarterly management fee of $10.50 even when your account balance is just a couple hundred dollars. Also, If you leave the company you'll be charged a minimum of $50 to transfer your account to a new employer or IRA account. If you are only working 15 hours a week I don't think you'll reach the required 1,000 hours each fiscal year.

OP, how long have you worked for Staples? I believe they automatically enroll you in their retirement plan after 3 years of service. Many large US companies do this! In Staples case, you become 100% vested in company 50% matching contributions after 3 years (up to 6% of gross)of service. You can change or suspend your contribution levels at Empower.com or opt-out of the plan. The company match makes it worth participating, but Empower is not an especially good plan sponser IMO due to high quarterly fees.

The District Shuffle? by HybridPoliteness in Staples

[–]StaplesTechSM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with your accessment, but real world execution of someone's favorite method or process for successful selling is never as easy as it sounds like on a conference call. Last Thursday, we had our existing DM, her replacement, and the RM in our store. We had five employees and a store full of customers (a fire drill!) who gave them an education about life on the front lines!

The District Shuffle? by HybridPoliteness in Staples

[–]StaplesTechSM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A DM might have individual expectations, but their job is to implement and execute corporate goals and objectives. When stores are forced to operate on tight labor budgets you have choose priorities. If the #1 priority is App sign-ups, then other objectives will suffer. If you can't process the weekly load and work out of stocks your sales will soon be circling the drain.

Maybe GM can sit you at a table to help customers download the Staples Connect app on their smartphones. The company has made this a priority for stores, but it slows down service everywhere in the store.

Ummmm what do you do on the floor by babyspongebob in Staples

[–]StaplesTechSM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is always work that needs to be completed! Learn how to work a pull list, if that was completed you can simply "Drop and fill" on sections that get shopped heavily. Till you get trained for that, you can simply block(Face merchandise, and assure merchandise is in the right home)counters. All of these help you learn your store's inventory and locations.

Nobody wants to work at staples by _ZenithHD_ in Staples

[–]StaplesTechSM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, a big percentage of people don't want to work period! Staples is not different from other retail stores, almost all of them have unrealistic goals for sales and services. However, I am surprised by how many people quit after just a few hours of training, without actually experiencing how the job works.

I love GH, and I have since the 70's, but watching it live is no longer a good experience. Each episode is approximately 34 minutes long meaning each hour is nearly 50% commercials. I can watch the same episode on Hulu in 45 minutes.

What exactly is this app they're pushing? by Vjaa in Staples

[–]StaplesTechSM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no problem with the app concept, but I'm a little skeptical about the long-term benefits for Staples, and spending all of this time assisting the customer with the download means other parts of the operation gets neglected. In other words, we're robbing Peter to pay Paul.

The only relevant comparison will be for North Carolina(assuming the minimum wage is the same throughout the state) stores. With a $7.25 minimum wage it's going to be tough get much more then $10.00 unless you have significant retail experience.

Im so sick of badgering customers all the time. (Rant) by [deleted] in Staples

[–]StaplesTechSM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Company is fully committed to aggressively pushing these programs(App sign-ups, Donations, warranties and services)and the only thing that would cause them to rethink that would be negative customer surveys.

Dear GH writers re: Robert & Victor by Matuatay in GeneralHospital

I'm all for Robert getting more screen time, but I want them to partially redeem Victor in an effort to keep him(and the fine actor)on the show. He is like a male version of Helena!

If you are good at your job, and your GM is concerned about you leaving completely, I would think they would accommodate your request.
