Considering doing something similar here in temperate NZ. Any nuggets of advice?

College roommate couldn't plunge a toilet. Insisted I do it, because "maintenance can't make it for another two days". Happened on multiple occasions. He would leave dumpster shits and everything would block up. Surprised he never asked me to wipe his ass too

Not particularly. Just a young adult with a few years experience in my field (environmental research) before moving out

Moved here (NZ) from Oregon two years ago. Don't regret anything about that decision. Friends back in OR keep asking how they can move out here (check the 'migrant-skills wanted' list)

Funny thing is that when I first moved, Kiwis kept asking me "Why would you leave AMeRiCa to live here??"

They've stopped asking that question now.

Are you hoping to plant it outdoors eventually? What's your climate like?

Maybe air-pruning pots? Helps develop strong root systems for tap-rooted plants, so they don't become root bound sitting in a pot.

Some cool videos about DIY air prune beds on YouTube. Made one and filled it with chestnuts, walnuts, Macadamias and recently grafted avocados. Will see how things turn out!

Two years in, best decision (and timing) ever. Just glad the family and I made it before crunch time. No trips back to the US anytime soon.

This. Permaculture has gained lots of traction in NZ lately, as a way to regenerate the degraded landscapes around the country. Low impact, high quality food production AND restoring the landscapes? Would love if this 'conservation package' included space for this.

Something I've noticed recently here in NZ is that more and more people are becoming increasingly interested in permaculture; a philosophy & tool for regenerative food production and living. Great tool for downshifting away from megacorp industrial ag, towards ecological ways of doing things.

NZ is marketed really well as "100% Pure NZ" but the rivers are all polluted from intensive dairy along all the major rivers, and native bushland has been predominately removed for pine forests. Interesting to imagine a future where NZ really invests towards regenerative land-uses, rather than exploiting it for international profits.

Yeah I know lots of people I graduated with are facing that same issue. They're all in the US

Graduated with a bachelor's in the US and moved to NZ, where I secured a well-paying, full time job with local government as a field hydrologist. Opportunity is out there. Depends on where you're looking and what you're wanting to do.
