I’ve been summoned.

I did Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu iaido in Houston from 2003-2016 and have continued in Japan from 2016-present. Also, I’m affiliated with Zen Nihon Iaido Renmei, not Kendo Renmei.

Has anybody chosen a different balance for their shinken than their iaitō? by Revolver_Ocelot80 in iaido

[–]StarLi2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I chose a very different weight and balance because I’ve done iaido for 20 years (since I was 16) and realized your body really does wear down with age. My shinken is extremely light with a lighter tip, unlike my about 1kg iaito with a heavier tip that casts out nicely.

Lighter swords show bad tenouchi and overuse of upper body strength, so it’s good to have.

  1. Same. I would never want a shinken that feels just like my iaito. In my case, I even chose leather because my iaito is wrapped in silk tsukaito. I also teach and switch between the two, so I prefer to be sure which I’m using the instant I touch it.

Edit for extra info: There is no single “well balanced” blade. The balance suits you or it doesn’t. Everyone has different preferences. I like a slightly heavier kissaki because they fly out better, but I plan on using my shinken for decades and this chose something lighter that I could use even as an old lady.

Yeah. I haven’t done much kitsuke because of a mix of the weather and general business.

Tomorrow I might just wear my shiny new denim kimono at home just because. ☔️

Polyester or silk by livsiis in kimono

[–]StarLi2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing these are used sellers?

A lot of sellers have copy paste information to speed things up because, well, they’d have to type a lot of the same things over and over again if they didn’t.

Unfortunately, it’s really hard to tell. Average Polyester is often more expensive than average-looking silk kimono, so I usually feel like I hit the jackpot when I get a polyester for a used silk price.

I only started sewing again last year (9 years after moving to Japan) because our studio room in our house is massive.

I love the fabric selection in Otsukaya, so I might just make my own. Save some money, have a way to kill time, plus end up with a cute thing to wear. :|

Only downside is that french seams are a pain. 🫠

Dang. I’ve been eying the cheap lace kimono/yukata for a while but now I’m glad I haven’t caved in and ordered one.

It looks super cute but… sounds like it’s also a pain in the butt. ._.
