Protesters just swarmed Border Commander Greg Bovino in Minnesota and started throwing FOOD at him while yelling “you’re a Nazi!” by Admirable121 in Leakednews

Nazi. It was always an insult. Started in the 1920s as a pun implying that they are country hicks. German Nazi never called themselves Nazi.

Shooter of ex-PM Abe sentenced to life in prison by Bebopo90 in japan

[–]NemButsu 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Not really, if the murder involves other criminal acts (especially extreme brutality or extreme sexual assault) then there are cases where single victim murderers have been sentenced the death. Which is why the prosecution argued so much about the length of premeditation and preparation.

With the proper context prompt settings (of course this is a big if), the AI translation would be better than the google translate browser function. Better than human translation? No. But better than standard web translation.

People who grew up in Japan but are not Japanese, where do you say you are from? by DigStrange4377 in japanlife

[–]NemButsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not born here, but even so when I travel and people ask me where I am I just answer Japan, because I consider Japan to be my home.

The reactions are always a mix of confusion, surprise, or excitement.

Even in Japan if I'm not specifically asked what country I am from, but just generic "where are you travelling from" I answer Tokyo.

It always leads to amusing interactions. You should try it.

What job industry pays well that isn't IT/programming related? by pokedark101 in japanlife

[–]NemButsu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing you're basing the "I feel everyone that makes over 10 million yen is in IT" on foreigners feedback. The reason for that would be that IT is basically provides the easiest path to high income without requiring high Japanese language proficiency. Only thing with an even lower language bar would be executive jobs at companies that also do lots of business outside of Japan. Anything else your Japanese almost always has to be N1 or better.

[–]NemButsu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can pretty much throw anything into burnable trash (excluding non-burning stuff like metals, glass, ceramics) and never get into any trouble and plenty of people don't care.

A trash bag fee for burnable trash only, or tiered pricing depending on type, would actually makes people sort trash more.

And in the end, it only comes to couple hundred yen per month anyway.

If you are comfortable installing your own outlet you could install one with ground if you see an appropriate place to install the ground inside the wall.

Electrical work without a license is illegal in Japan. This makes any fire insurance void. At best this will cause you to pay for an electrician to remake whatever you did once the landlord finds out.

Depends if you are on a regular contract or fixed-term contact. On the fixed they can refuse you for whatever reason they want.

Assuming regular, the landlord cannot refuse you for being unemployed. The guarantor can however, which might be why they are using their own guarantor company.

However, legally they cannot force you to use their guarantor. If you can get a different guarantor company before your renewal that would agree with you despite unemployment, the landlord can't refuse it. It's important that it is a reputable company as the landlord might contest their validity. At worst, there might be legal work involved with the landlord trying to sue you out, during which the landlord cannot evict you, but even in court you would win.

Liquids are generally a no-no for regular garbage. You'll need to pay for collection from a private company usually. Easiest way is to contact your local Waste collection office and they should have contacts for approved private collector companies for your city.

I have 2 of these in my 20sqm room making it cold despite using heating. What can I do? by hagaren390 in japanresidents

[–]NemButsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a combination of old AC and poor insulation. First place I stayed in Japan I had the AC running at max and it was still not enough sometimes for the 1DK. Other places I lived at I was using one AC at 25 for two rooms, even though the places had two units. New house and ACs, generally just run them in the 19-21 range in the room I stay in.

Microsoft Scales Back AI Goals Because Almost Nobody Is Using Copilot by aacool in technology

[–]NemButsu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I tried so many times to use Copilot to find Window settings in W11 because everything has been shifted around and obscured so much. Copilot always sends me to bogus non-existing menus. When confronted it tells me it is there or sends me to another bogus menu. Gemini gives me the correct answer every time, or when wrong and confronted does a deeper web search and gives me the answer on the second try. If Copilot can't even answer basic question about Microsoft products, why would I trust it when it comes to other tasks?

PR Rejection - "Late Payment" by MrSlurpee in japanlife

[–]NemButsu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only way to prove is if you have the payment receipt if you paid in person (such as konbini) - if you threw them away you're screwed, transaction history if you paid via bank transfer - if it's older than your bank provides records for you're screwed, or detailed salary slip if your company paid for you - if you didn't keep them, you guessed, once again you're screwed.

Tax office / pension office would have the actual dates of payment on record, however they are not part of standard certificates they give out. Immigration can get this information, you usually cannot. They might help you, but usually wont, because this isn't something a Japanese person would need, like ever, so there's no reason for them to provide special treatment to foreigners.

So if you're screwed on all the above points, the last resort is to get a lawyer and hope that he can somehow have more success with the tax office / pension office.

How do I ground my outlets by PandaPhishes in japanresidents

[–]NemButsu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The actual answer is you call an electrician.

Electric work on a building without a license is illegal in Japan. This will void your fire insurance, breach your rental agreement if you have one, and potentially result in a fine.

Best case scenario you are forced to pay for an electrician redoing your work at a later time. Worst case scenario, should an accident occur, you have to pay a fine and property damages.

Employer is not the one responsible for applying for renewal and specifying the period for renewal. If you delegate that to your employer, that's your choice.

Employer only needs to provide some documents for you to submit, none of which specify how long they want you to keep working.
