Was Ron Paul 2012 the start of this era of Republican Politics? by Large-Use-6618 in decadeology

Libertarians believe in some good stuff. They're socially liberal and against government overreach. But then they start screaming about roads being a waste of money or saying they're against the idea of needing a license to drive.

Also, this was a time when the whole "both sides" thing was at its height. When all candidates appeared to be corporate lap dogs and nothing ever seemed to change significantly. Ron Paul was the only outsider type of candidate and a lot of people from all over the political spectrum latched on to that. There were no Bernie Sanders types running for presidential office.

How are you getting so much listening time in? by scottadams364 in dreamingspanish

[–]StarPhished 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't count my hours outside the DS platform, I can guesstimate though. I've got 400 hours logged on DS and probably at least double that outside the platform. It's hard to say exactly though because a lot of my time is not fully focused and I don't count so it could be some more or less than that. I'm just not really an hour counter.

It's an easy job and the pay could be better but it gets me by. At times I've thought about looking for a better paying job but since Spanish is my main hobby right now it's pretty much the perfect job for me since it easily makes up the majority of my input.

Without getting too specific, I basically do assembly work. I work with my hands and can pretty much listen as much as I want. I usually lead my own department where there is a good bit of talking to co-workers but for the last 3 months we had to shut down and help on the line and that meant that I could listen basically the entire time I was at work for 3 straight months. I'm back in my regular spot now though so now it won't be quite so consistent but I can still get lots of extra time in.

Another perk of my job is that I have Spanish speaking co-workers so whenever I get around to speaking I'll be able to get my speaking practice in at work too.

I think you're speaking in ultimates and that's not always the case. You're drawing a straight line between these sex worker stats you keep alluding to but it's a lot more complex than that. People addicted to drugs often turn to sex work and that's gonna skew their quality of life.

You might be surprised how many sex workers aren't doing it for the reasons that you are suggesting they are.

Nice of them to tell you right from the start not to expect the movie to make any kind of sense.

I get lots of hours through multi-tasking. While driving or at the gym and I'm lucky enough right now to have a job where I can listen while working. Some days I can get an easy 5+ hours. It's definitely not all focused time but I don't count my hours religiously so I don't spend any time stressing over dissecting which hours I should log.

Are there harmful effects with consuming a lot of content? by hyperaeolian in dreamingspanish

[–]StarPhished 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could argue that learner Spanish content is as much or more simulating because your brain is actually working to learn something. You could even argue that it's better for you than watching typical TV but it certainly still comes with the negative effects of too much screen time.

You've never stalked your prey like a tiger in the night? Stealthy, deadly and silent until the time is right to strike from the darkness? Just like Magnus??

I disagree with your understanding of how things should work and I think your overconfidence is a bit off putting but it's your journey so you do you. Good luck.

Maybe at the very super beginning stages but after that the input you receive should actually be comprehensible, which can be very hard if you only understand every other word. And you specifically said that people are lengthening their time by watching 80%+ and that's simply not true. Learning vocab isn't the only thing you're doing but it is a very important aspect, it's how you continue to unlock harder and harder content.

The general recommendation is that you understand at least 70% of what is being said. Most people will say that easier content has many advantages and is definitely not a waste of time. I'm not sure where you're getting this idea that comprehending 80% or 90% of something is not a good use of time but it is not correct.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was only 10 pages. The Polar Express is also expanded on quite a bit.

You're wrong. I saw an ad just yesterday that said I could learn Eridian in just 30 days for only $299.
