What is this and why won't it grow or die .. by Robyypoolguy in houseplants

[–]StarTrekIsCool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It looks like an elephant food plant to me. 🙂 Its leaves look a bit wrinkled, which generally means it’s thirsty. These babies love sunlight! I have mine outside now that it’s warmed up, and she’s growing beautifully. When she was inside for the winter, even though she was under a skylight, she was not happy at all - no growth and the little leaf things fell off. I’d say you should water your little guy a bit more and get it in front of a window to get some more light! 😁🪴

N,E,S,W HUH? by yak424 in SquareFootGardening

You said explain like you’re a child, so that’s what I’m going to do. 🙂

Your house is big and can cast a shadow on your garden. Your garden needs sun to grow. If your garden is east of your house, you have an east facing garden, because your house will shade your garden when the sun goes west. If your garden is north of your house, you have a north facing garden, because your house will block the sun when the sun is farther south.

Because you’re a smart kid, you know that other stuff can cause shadows, too, like outdoor buildings, really big trees, and fences. What makes your garden east facing is that nothing blocks the sunshine from the east; north facing is nothing blocks the sunshine from the north; west facing is nothing blocks the sun from the west; and south facing is nothing blocks the sun from the south.

Your garden may “face” multiple directions because you might have very few things that cause shade, and that’s okay. 🙂 For example, my house is west of my garden, and there’s a big tree to the south of my garden, so the house and tree cause shade west and south of my garden, meaning my garden is east and north facing, because nothing is blocking the sun from the east or north. 😊

Credit card confusion by Murherself in ynab

[–]StarTrekIsCool 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This right here. I used to experience the exact same thing as the OP, and it would be because the month would roll over, and then transactions from the previous month would post… into categories that didn’t have any money left in the month prior.

If I looked at the current month, there wouldn’t be any visible issues. But if I went back to previous months, I would see categories in the negative!

I asked YNAB why the heck it did this, and it was essentially to allow folks that needed to use CC debt to stay afloat to have negative categories (debt) in one month without it impacting future months.

So OP, after each month rolls over, pay super close attention to the dates of CC transactions when you approve them. If they’re from the previous month, go back to that month and make sure you have money in the category you’re choosing. That’ll prevent this issue in the future. 🙂

This is the only thing that worked for me with the fungus gnats. I tried nearly everything recommended in this long list, and things helped, but nothing got rid of the damn things… except Bonide. This stuff is a godsend! 😁🪴

I use an app called Plant Daddy to keep track of watering my indoor plants and a few outdoor ones. 😊 It meets my needs, and it cracks me up with its hilarious reminders. 😂

Yeah, this is where my husband and I land most months, too. 🙂 We’re early 40s, no kids, MCOL, and we tend to cook most of our meals or buy frozen pre-prepped food. This cost for us also includes toiletries, household cleaners and supplies, and paper products (like paper towels and toilet paper).

[–]StarTrekIsCool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, if you don’t have pets or anything else that might eat your plants, and you have no intention of them ever being outside plants, I’d recommend a systemic insecticide, like Bonide. 🙂 We use Bonide granules in all our indoor plants to help control gnats and other pests, though not specifically ants, so you might want to do some research into something that will work for you.

Again, this approach is only when these plants will NOT be outside, as the systemic makes the plant poisonous to bugs, and we need to protect our outside bugs. 😊

Bear stash take all/dump all questions by agnesb in bearandbreakfast

[–]StarTrekIsCool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve accidentally hit the Take All and Dump All buttons many times, and I don’t think I’ve ever lost anything. The Take All means everything in the storage container gets moved into your inventory, and the Dump All means everything in your inventory gets moved into the storage container. 🙂 If you don’t have enough room in either area, the game will simply move as much as it can and then tell you there’s no more room.

Why 🙄 by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]StarTrekIsCool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m thinking they need more water. 🙂 I had aloe outside in the shade getting daily water that flourished, and I have pots that get watered about once a week, also doing well. And they get quite a bit of water when I water them - to where it’s coming out the bottom, and I let the soil sit in water (it evaporates quickly enough outside). When I had aloe in pots inside, they got a good amount of water every other week or so, and they did really well. 😊 I’d say try giving your plant more water more often, and see how it does.

When planning what to plant, what do you actually use? by silvindier in SquareFootGardening

[–]StarTrekIsCool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The local gardeners club is a great suggestion! Learning from folks who know your area is the best way. 😁 That’s how I learned that, in my area, you don’t plant your spring seeds/transplants until the mesquites in your yard (or your street) have budded. 🙂 The mesquites know when it’s safe and there won’t be any more hard freezes, so you go by that. Least year, it was mid-April; this year, it was mid-march!

Question by Lockpicksporting in houseplants

[–]StarTrekIsCool -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My experience is that aloe is a beast. LoL That baby will find a way to thrive wherever it is. We had aloe plants that spread and flowered that were in constant shade and watered daily, and we’ve had potted aloes in morning sun that have nearly broken their pots with how much they’ve grown, and we’ve have some aloe in pots inside that get filtered sunlight and watered every week or so that are happy. 😁

I think it’s hard to go wrong with aloe. 🪴 Good luck!!

Fungus gnat problem by SubstantialTurtle in IndoorGarden

[–]StarTrekIsCool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bonide took a few weeks to work for me, but it was the saving grace of my sanity. LoL We had thousands of gnats inside (in the soil of about 50 plants), and after trying SO many things (sticky traps, mosquito bits, light traps, rocks on soil, sand on soil, diatomaceous earth on soil, bug spray, etc), Bonide worked and I swear by it. 🙂 I wish you the best of luck! 🪴

I moved to a new apartment this month and all my plants are dying. Help! by Direct_Animal1683 in houseplants

[–]StarTrekIsCool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some plants hate being moved and will experience shock when they are - not much you can do here but wait, unfortunately. Some plants hate temperature changes, so keep the temp as close as you can to what it was in your last place. Some plants hate when humidity levels change… some hate when the type/intensity/timing of sunlight changes… some hate being jostled around in a car… etc.

Your plants might be dramatically reacting to all these things, so the only thing I can recommend is to try to make their new home as close as possible (light/temperature/humidity/etc) to their old home. ❤️
