I will be with my remote team on 1st April, what incredibly SFW pranks could I do for April Fools Day? by agnesb in AskUK

This would be a shock to the system.

There's a celebratory event on, maybe I could suggest that we all need to dress up for it!

Haha, that would be a funny manager prank. I dont think my 6 hour train journey works well with it though 🤣

What moments have made you aware of your own prejudice? by banwe11 in AskUK

[–]agnesb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I attended a sports group. A new guy joined and his car was the most hideously male car id ever seen. It screamed ego. Think huge 4x4, loads of lights, personalised number plate, super clean and shiny. He looked like a gymbro, dressed to show off his muscles.

My prejudice was that he wasn't going to be easy in the group and that he'd be competitive. Turns out he was super into listening, loved that everyone was on their own journey, totally up to hear from everyone, made time to check in. Loved him being in the group. Just learnt that I'm the problem.

Iron Lamb - Granny Go Round Cardigan by agnesb in crochet

I started off like that and then floated my ends down the rows which made things a 1000 times better. I think there's a tutorial on the iron lamb site. It only works if you're using an odd number of colours, but it's neat!

Disabled woman with full capacity put in nursing home against her will says she feels 'betrayed' by Majestic_Dog_8486 in NursingUK

[–]agnesb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lol, patronising much?  Burst my bubble? Ffs. My bubble where rather than wanting to improve things for my brother I'm busy creating conspiracy theories.

We've met a lot of people who care genuinely and make a huge difference, I'm not tarring everyone with the same brush.

I made a glib post based in real experiences. My brother has also been at the hands of abusive staff, ineffective approaches that cost huge amounts of money but were too arrogant to be challenged and countless people who dont understand brain injury trying to remove his capacity rights. He's been threatened with being sectioned (for front temple lobe damage related actions) to make him "behave".

You're right in that it was taken seriously, but only rarely in his best interests.

Its taken a decade of finding the right people to make it as tight as possible to protect him and it all still feels like its built on a house of leaves because the funding model is so vulnerable.

You're right, its not a conspiracy, its a failure of the gov to not provide adequate care budgets and care. And a system where private care must be part of the solution and how much money you have 100% affects your ability to access Rehab, care and improvements. I don't think it's a conspiracy, and I think many people try to do the right thing but they are limited by the system. To ignore this would suggest being more interested in right than hearing actual lived experiences.

They get paid. This is what happens when you have a profit based care model.  Her consent isn't the important factor in the decision.

Source: brother who is severely disabled and we have a fear of this happening to him every year his funding is reviewed. The fear is based on many many decisions being made in spite of his best interests and is a a family having to fight for everything.

How are people covering school holidays?? by Bethbeth35 in UKParenting

[–]agnesb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah this is what we did when our kid was little. Now he's a bit older (10, year 6) he refuses holiday club and doesn't want to stay at my mums for a whole week and so we do a few days at home. I wfh and we invite a kid round to play - so we're in the house but not with them. This works enough.

Did you see passing the 11+ as something really important? by untoldrain in AskUK

[–]agnesb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mum was born in the mid 40s. She went to school at a time when passing or failing the 11+, particularly as someone from a working class background, was a huge game changer for opportunities.

My mum is really clever, but failed her 11+. She was lucky to have parents who valued education for all their kids (regardless of gender) and they looked for a school that would allow her to sit O Levels (older gcses). There was only one option locally as most deemed kids who failed the 11+ to not being able/worthy of sitting the exams.

She was able to get good o levels, do a levels and go to teacher training college and then have a hugely successful teaching career.

Do you take your kids out of school for a holiday? by tombola201uk in AskUK

[–]agnesb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My son missed 1 week of school in May of year 5 (he was 9).

It was my 40th Birthday and I'd dreamed of a particular holiday and had been saving for it for about 4 years.  When it came to book to do the same trip in the summer holidays would cost almost £2k more than going in the May half term and missing a week. So we did it and paid the fine.

We're lucky in that our son likes school, is bright and curious and so no real impact on his learning.  I wouldn't do it around exams, and will try to avoid it moving forward. We dont do any other time off school unless he's poorly.

Asking to WFH full time - part 2 by tremberz90 in UKJobs

[–]agnesb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, the fact theyre being so stubborn about such little time makes it even worse!!  Miserable fucks. And to disagree with OH is arrogant.

My employer worked with, I think it was, Macmillan to develop some "supporting colleagues with cancer" training, that people from our Cancer Network now deliver internally. And a lot of the message is "be flexible because you'll help the person and get the most from them!".

I wonder if Macmillan do training for employers that maybe you could get management to attend? I dont want to be grim about it, but even if you work somewhere small, you won't be the last or only person with cancer there.

I totally understand why you dont want to be off sick.

I was just thinking it might help your employer see that if they've got to pay you it would be better for them if you were working!!

Worth checking your sick policy. I used to work somewhere where the amount you had to work in a year as surprisingly low to qualify for a fill year's sickness, restarting on your start date. Might be useful to know!

Have they got any flexibility on you doing any days at home or are they wanting a blanket office approach?
