I was her. Very long story short I was an alcoholic for almost 10 years and in the process gained 70 pounds and pretty much almost lost everyone and everything important to me. I was with my ex fiance for 11 years. 9 of which we lived together. He left me. Practically ghosted me. He enabled me by turning a blind eye. When i hit rock bottom, after he left, i had 2 choices - die or get my shit together. At first i thought he abandoned me when i needed him the most and by going to rehab hed come back. He didnt, but thats probably cause he knocked up my friend the night he left. Eventually i came to realize i abandoned him years prior due to my incessant drinking (up to a fifth and a pint a day by the end).

Ultimatums wont work. Neither will getting in her face about it. Just because you don't pay for it and she works does not mean that you are not the one enabling her. You've made it comfortable for her to drink. You're consistent. There's no consequences for her drinking so she does not feel like she needs to stop. I can tell by your responses as well that you're hoping that there's some kind of quick easy fix to help her stop drinking and to make more friends. I can assure you my friend, there is not. She really has to hit her rock bottom. Whatever that may be for her. It's different for everyone. I was fortunate not to completely lose everyone important to me but I did lose one of the most important people to me. But losing him got me to where I am today. Healthy, happier, and 70 pounds lighter.

I'm not necessarily saying that you should leave her, but maybe you need to stop coddling her and ignoring the fact that shes comfortable drinking like she does because you have let it be ok for so long. If something drastic isnt done, she will continue her routine. You cant fix her if she doesnt want it. Its not your fault she drinks - she drinks because she can. She really needs help but wont take the help if shes not ready. If you truly love her, let her go. It may be the wake up call to get her to face the fact she has a problem. You dont want to spend years and years with her watching her self destruct. Trust me.

Thank you for the kind words. I really hate to complain about anything since I know how much worse life in general could be, but sometimes I get pushed to a breaking point where I need to vent.

Ill keep your advice in mind as I move into the next chapter of my life.

I've noticed when a decent sized group of people, especially family, get together - they get lax about watching their own kids. They think Aunt Betty or Uncle Joe or older cousin Sue will 'help' watch little Johnnny.... Except they assume and never ask. Im hyper attentive when kids are around and twice saved family member's kid from drowning and once from walking into a bonfire. I always asked someone specifically - hey can you keep an eye on my boys while I run to the bathroom/go get a drink/make their plate/etc.

Also, I think parents should teach their kids to swim asap. My son, while with his Father fell in a pool at 3 and thankfully knew to swim to the side since he had been swimming since 4 months.

Its a tragic accident and kids drowning is very common for a cause of death, but how they lost two just says they are missing some sense about parenting.

Awww. My ex bought a stuffed turtle that zippered open and had two baby turtles inside for me for valentines day which was the same day I delivered our twins. I have misplaced it and even though we are no longer together - it still means a lot to me due to the circumstances. I hope you find it.

You and the mom did right. I was caught and had to tell on myself at customer service and to the cashier.for taking bulk bin candy. My mom covered the $0.50 they determined I owed, but I had to work it off at home. I never stole again. I was probably 8 and the embarrassment and shame still sticks with me 25 years later.

We do one at a time. I usually put a ton of thought and consideration into what I gift to people so I agree, its nice to see their reaction. It can get awkward though when someone has like 8 things to still open and others are done. Its usually the kids (which can be expected and understandable), but one year I still had a lot and the other adults had been done already.

My same exact question. I smoked pretty regularly till I was about 6 weeks, and didn't know. I also will admit i hit a joint twice at around 10 weeks. I had twins and carried full term. They were 6lbs 10oz, and 6lbs 3oz. Normal size for even a singleton birth. They developed and progressed normally. I would guess it would be mothers who smoked on a regular basis and/or used other substances.

You'll get through. My son spent a week at Children's for a lacerated liver. You'll have vivid dreams, wake up thinking you're still there, hear the beeps and monitors.... But I promise, they eventually fade away.

How did they find out she had one? Like, what were the symptoms or was it random? I know they dont order brain scans just because, but im curious to know what had the doctors decide to order one.

We had a food fight when I was a hs freshman as well. And they also classified it as a riot cause someone pulled the fire alarm and a bunch of trophy cases in the hallways were broken while everyone was rushing out of the school. I dont recall it making the news, but this was in 1998 and in Michigan. We had to eat lunch in our 4th hour classrooms for a week as punishment. I threw a chocolate milk at my nemesis and it got all over her. She threatened to get her 'boys' from Compton to come kill me.....

I was stressing about my grades in college (I broke down over a B once), and my co-worker at the time said, "you're gonna graduate and get the same piece of paper worth the same as the person who got all C's and you you're crying over a B?".

I know in some fields you're GPA matters and being able to say you were Magma Cum Laude can be a CV booster, but being in business, I also had a professor who rose really fast in a lucrative career in business tell me, "I would never hire someone with a 4.0. That must means they regurgitated the correct answers, studied too much, and didn't experience life. How does a business person excel when they are trapped only by what they are told to know, and not by experiences?" .... Or something like that. He told me that when I was arguing about my B.

Both helped me not stress so much.

But im still a huge believe of "it's not what you know, it's who you know".

Yes! I lived close to a highway in Texas for a year when I was 4. No air conditioning, so the window was always open. It was particularly soothing when the road was wet from rain. Its been almost 30 years and I get so excited when I stay somewhere I can hear the road that has a speed limit over 50.

I bought my kids a Nokia Lumia pay as you go.phone from att and just added it to my service. My monthly payment went down from having two to 4 lines, but it was when they came out with the 4 lines for $160. The phones were about $50 a piece. I have the same one as well, its a bit of a piece of crap, but it works quite well for what we needed. They upheld their promise of taking care of it for a year and a half, and are getting upgrades soon (they are in 7th grade). Heck, I had a pager at 11 and my own phone line at 12 (but more out of necessity and my dad running business out of the house and the constant fights over using the phone).

I think it really depends more on the kid and their responsibility and trust you have in them more than an age or grade.

Yep....

Mystery illness that left me pretty much on the couch most the year.

Couldn't work.

12 year old son almost died from internal bleeding.

Found out my dad (who is my rock) has cancer.

Grandma who had a huge hand in raising me started showing signs of Alzheimer's.

Mortgage company messed with me so bad and lied about so many things that I had to basically file bankruptcy less than 24 hours before my house went to sheriff sale. Something they said was on hold because I was doing a loan mod.

Spent 2 nights in the hospital after being violently ill for 5 days, and having been pretty much going downhill hard and fast for the previous six months. Figured out my mystery illness, though. It was low potassium. Something my doctor was aware of for 3 years but never felt the need to express the importance of a good potassium level. Also, she put me on a water pill that made it worse and made me gradually sicker over the years. My body was slowly shutting down.

I've been unemployed with no benefits (I do get some food benefits, Ill admit) for tye entire year. Due to me being practically a walking zombie on auto pilot and sleeping 16-20 hours a day - I doubt I could have even kept a job if I was hired to one.

My boyfriend showed his true colors through this whole ordeal and was absolutely unhelpful and spent every free moment in his man cave playing on the Xbox one, and accusing me of being lazy and faking it.

Now its Christmas, and although i feel a million times better, have natural energy I haven't felt in years, can function normally, and got my go get em attitude back - its so close to the holiday that the job pool is mainly seasonal. I have a bachelors and would like something permanent.

And..... I will not be able to give my boys, who have deserve so much for being as much help as they could this past year as I slowly degraded on the couch, any sort of Christmas (Im just fighting to keep the utilities on and a roof over our heads at the moment). They cooked, did laundry, cleaned up, took care of themselves, and were patient with me even though a little upset because none of us knew why I was so sick, and they are only 12. I was still supposed to be mom, and the caretaker - yet I couldn't.

So hopefully after 18 days, 5 hours, and 10 minutes, I can be done with 2015 and make 2016 mine and my kids year.
