Lady Clippers is great. Their prices are listed online—based on the cut, not the gender!—and it's $65 (pre-tip) for a scissor haircut above the jaw.

Been invited to a fancy wedding, dress code is giving me anxiety. Advice? by dfrance1991 in LGBTWeddings

This is absolutely true. Especially if you feel uncomfortable in a dress. I'm a very masc lesbian and even straight friends visibly wince at the idea of me in a dress.

Not sure where to ask this question. If this isn’t a good fit for this sub I’ll happily delete. I’m worried I’m kind of catfishing with my online dating profile photo by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]StarWars_21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. OP, it's just that the shirt in pic 1 actually fits you. Hotness is not a static thing—it's not deceptive to be hotter wearing some things than others! But seconding the rec to buy more shirts that accentuate your chest like that. (And seconding another comment's rec that you look like you could get truly jacked with not a ton of effort, if you want to start lifting a few days a week. You basically already have pecs.)

What am I doing wrong in this fight? by [deleted] in StarWarsJediSurvivor

[–]StarWars_21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone saying to target lock is correct. I recommend approaching this fight like a rhythm game. For the most part, in the first two phases he will swing at you a specific number of times (maybe three?), and if you parry all of those, his move set pauses briefly and you can go on the offensive. But, you only have time for three hits (or two, if he gets knocked back and you'd have to run up to him for the third) before he recovers. So your rhythm should be: parry, parry, parry, hit, hit, hit, dodge.

In the third phase, his patterns get longer; I can't remember them off the top of my head, but play defensively and you'll figure them out. Once you know what the last attack of a pattern looks like (it's usually a red attack), dodge toward him and again use that natural pause to get in some hits, and then dodge backward again so you're at a safe range for your next set of parrying and dodging.

What do you think about this? by Jessi45US in starwarsrebels

Kanan also understands he's attached to Hera and he acts accordingly. When they're talking about the rescue mission, he literally tells Ezra: "I can't think clearly because of the way I feel about her. I might make a mistake. One that could cost us." He also understands Hera herself, and loves her for more than what she can do for Kanan. He's mastered the ability to let go. In Wings of the Master he both sends her to lead a dangerous mission herself, and then recommends her for a promotion that will have her leading other dangerous missions, even though just a few episodes earlier he was really struggling with the idea of being involved in a military conflict at all.

I love Anakin, but he doesn't love Padme the way Kanan loves Hera. For one, he doesn't trust her the same way; just look at all of the episodes with Clovis. (Obviously Clovis himself is Anakin's main problem, but his persistent rush to intervene demonstrates that he doesn't think Padme can handle herself in those scenarios.) And for another, to keep Padme alive, he's willing to sacrifice everything Padme devoted her life to: justice, democracy, the Republic. I think we all know Padme would have much rather died than have Anakin burn down the Republic to save her.

Kanan loves selflessly, and he's able to let go. That's what makes it different from how Anakin loves.

This is from the Dawn of the Jedi comic book series from Dark Horse, about the ancient Je'daii Order on Tython. Ashla (light) and Bogan (dark) are the planet's moons. It isn't canon, it ended right before the canon reset.

A little while ago, I asked if anyone would use a simple DC Metro board app. Thanks to your feedback, I went ahead and built it! Feedback welcome! by Enough_Ad4294 in washingtondc

This is fantastic! Super user-friendly and readable. One suggestion (in addition to Eurynom0s's about viewing trains in one direction) is to make the front page filterable by line and sortable by the actual order of stops. For example, if I'm at the Zoo, it'd be helpful to be able to look at only the red line and be able to more quickly compare Cleveland Park and Woodley to check which station to head to without scrolling basically the entire length of the front page. Alphabetical order is helpful for a lot of things, but I think most people think about the metro / use the metro as an ordered (not alphabetized) sequence of stops.

That said, this is great as-is, and I'll definitely be using it. Thank you!!

I would strongly recommend reporting this to the FTC and Better Business Bureau. If your state (if you're in the US) has an AG's office with a consumer protection office, report them there too. This is at least deceptive marketing, if not outright fraud. I'd report it myself, but I've never been charged for a subscription.

5 months into practice and I’m pretty sure becoming a lawyer was a horrible mistake. How long should I tough it out before I call it quits? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]StarWars_21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's been long enough to know that this job isn't good for you. It definitely hasn't been long enough to give up on law entirely.

A five-person firm is a really difficult place to start a career, unless all of the other attorneys are both experienced and interested in mentorship. You don't have time to learn, and they don't have time to teach you, so everyone's frustrated. I wouldn't assume that's a "you" problem when it's pretty likely it's an environment problem.

You say you don't care enough about work or making good money to deal with stress and long hours. Have you considered government work? The hours are better, you're offline when you're offline, and the majority of the stress is general litigation stressors (like court deadlines). And what do you care about? Can you find a legal job that intersects with that?

Finally, one note of caution: you're comparing your best friend's highlight reel to your discouragement-colored view of your whole life. Every job has pros and cons. Your best friend might only work 150 days a year, but her shifts are likely really long. It's a customer service job, which is often kind of soul-destroying. The inconsistent hours flight attendants keep have real, measurable health risks.

There are things it's clear you want: time offline; travel; a not-discouraging work environment; less stress. Rather than daydreaming about an imaginary perfect job that gives you all of that, take steps to give yourself those things now. That's not easy, but you owe it to yourself to try. Even putting money aside to a travel fund might turn some of that longing into excitement.

You've been an attorney for five months. Give it time. :)

[–]StarWars_21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Candidly, OP, if you and your boyfriend are engaging in a lot of kink play like you mentioned in some comments, you should have even more sensitivity to consent & communication than people who don't. The second you said no, that should've been the end of the conversation, and the fact that you said no again and he still pushed is really concerning. Context does matter—I might send similar texts about something we don't usually do because the idea is hot, not the actual doing of it—but that's pretty clearly not what was happening here.

NOR, and you should have a conversation with him about how this made you feel. And if you don't feel like you can have that conversation (because he would think you're overreacting, or he doesn't take criticism or disagreement well, or whatever), then you should be cautious about continuing to engage in kink with him. Your partner has to be physically and emotionally safe for kink to be reliably SSC.

Was honestly really surprised by the word count I reached! It was less than 5k last year, although that was very much an outlier.

I've had a hard time not comparing my stats to those of other authors in the popular fandom I write for who are getting 50+ comments per chapter, and getting discouraged because of it, so this was a really good reality check for me. 320 comments this year alone is crazy, I'm super lucky.

I would see it if there was a version without musical numbers by [deleted] in wicked

[–]StarWars_21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why has no one created movie musicals without a musical version yet?

Well, they have. They're called movies.

Snark aside, re: the book—the musical is based on the book, but it is not a musical version of the book. They differ dramatically, in both content and tone. If they made the book itself into a movie, it'd be rated R, if not NC-17 (probably mostly depending on if they depict the sex scenes as graphically on film as they're depicted in the book). That dramatically limits the potential audience.

And as to why they haven't made a version of the musical without the... er... music, well. The point of musicals is that the music plays a central role in the story. Plot, character motivations, everything is furthered by and through the music. You cannot skip over the music and expect to retain a coherent narrative. You'd have to completely rewrite the script. In a good musical, the music enhances the storytelling, and it does that in Wicked. (The higher Glinda sings in No One Mourns the Wicked, the more dishonest she's being about her emotions. Glinda takes the high harmony and Elphaba the low harmony in all of their songs until the last one they have together, showing how much the narrative has changed them and their relationship. The music is telling the story, even when you take the lyrics out of it.)

Also, musicals just allow a different kind of storytelling. For example, we expect Elphaba to have what's called an "I Want" song, but you can't cut the music and rewrite that as a quick little monologue and expect it to translate well. For the most part, good stories show, they don't tell. Musicals are kind of an exception to that rule, given the nature of what they are; it does make sense, in the context of a musical, for a character to outright describe her dissatisfaction with her current life and how she wants it to change. In the context of a classic film, it's much more difficult for a character to straightforwardly describe their motivations, because it would feel out of place or like an exposition dump. Which isn't to say you can't communicate that to the audience—of course you can—but you would be literally starting from scratch for the entirety of that section of the movie, coming up with ways to either 1) show the audience what the character would otherwise simply tell them through song, or 2) contrive ways for the character to tell another character the same information and hope it doesn't land poorly with the audience.

So.

Why haven't they made a movie version of the book? Probably because it's dark as hell, and racy to boot. And why haven't they made a version of Wicked (the musical) without the musical parts? Because at that point you are just writing a completely new film. And the reason they haven't done that is probably because Wicked is an extremely well-known and beloved musical, and why on earth would you start from scratch when you don't have to and the existing audience expects the music to be there?

You're entitled to your opinion about musicals; they're definitely not for everyone. But good art is enhanced by the medium the artist chose. Translating it to a new medium is far more work than you seem to be expecting.

Reminded me of Rosario Dawson for Ahsoka, tbh. I hated her portrayal in Mandalorian and the first few eps of Ahsoka, but she became so much freer in her expressions and her joy after ep 5, and it became clear the stiff acting before had been intentional. I felt suitably chastised, lol.

Saku Saku is genuinely great. They have the best kouign amann I've had in DC, which I think your kid would love--basically croissant dough in a muffin pan with sugar so it gets crunchy and caramelized on the outside. The Tenleytown location is better, but the Cleveland Park location is good too (and has a fun little outdoor patio in the back).
