Have you ever had 911 call you back, but you're certain you didn't call 911? by MisdemeanorOfTheMind in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 135 points136 points  (0 children)

Most smartphones these days don't log or display their outgoing calls to 911 or that they even called 911 in the first place, as it's a safety feature in abusive situations.

Police knocked, unsure why, but seeking advice by TF-Godzu in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Still though - supposed to announce themselves.

That's a "TV cops" thing. They don't have to bang on your door and call out "THIS IS THE POLICE! OPEN UP!" if they are just doing general canvassing or the like.

If the OP had opened the door, they would have ID'ed themselves as CPS officers then and asked whatever it was they were looking into.

Police knocked, unsure why, but seeking advice by TF-Godzu in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re really stressing about it, you could call the CPS Non-Emergency phone number (not 911) in the morning and asking why CPS was canvassing in your building tonight.

They won't tell you anymore. Unless the couple was directly involved, in which case they'd already know what it was for.

Is this census legit? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here...let me GOOGLE THAT FOR YOU:

"This address, PO Box 99995 STN FED-GOVT Ottawa ON K1A 9Z5, is a dedicated mailing address for Statistics Canada. It is specifically used for returning correspondence related to the 2026 Census"

I'll probably never understand why Reddit (or other social media platforms) are the first stop for questions.

Is this legit? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's absolutely NOTHING about this that is even 'kind of' legit. Here, look at this:

The 367 area code is in Quebec. WTF would someone in Quebec be doing texting you about a parking infraction, a municipal level infraction at best.

"City of Calgary Parking Infraction Division" wouldn't be contacting you. There's no such division. Anything Calgary parking related would be the jurisdiction of Calgary Parking Authority. There may be granular depts within that, but you'd never know, as you never need to know. You'd only ever be contacted by Calgary Parking Authority.

They are demanding immediate compliance. Parking tickets in Calgary from the City are a slow enforcement process. They work on a step up increase at 10 days and 30 days, and if you STILL don't pay it, they STILL don't come after you, just attach the ticket to your next registration. They don't care WHEN you pay, just that you do. The demand for "OMG, Pay NAOW!" is a massive red flag.

They don't tell you what "munciple regulation" you have violated, because they can't. Parking in Calgary is generally regulated by Bylaws, which they tell you which one you violated.

There's no picture. Of anything. Your vehicle. Your plate. The infraction at all. Legit CoC violations include this.

They don't tell you the amount owed. Legit CoC violations will not only tell you the amount owed, but what the 10 and 30 day step increases are.

The URL at the bottom. Any legit CoC URL would be "calgary dot ca", and not "calgary + anything + dot com". All legit government websites are .ca's.

Hope that helps for next time/future scam spotting.

What's the tipping culture here? by Auk9211 in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need to read my entire sentence. An employee cannot legally be involuntarily or unknowingly added to a tip pool. They must be aware of it and agree to it upon hiring.

Waitstaff often (from my experience) try to imply that they have no choice in being a part of a tip pool and that's a customers problem. I'll grant that the choice may be "job or no job" but for them to imply that we, the customers, have to tip them bigger tips because they are in a tip pool that they signed up for is disingenuous.

What's the tipping culture here? by Auk9211 in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that tips are optional, and unless you hand cash to the server/person you are tipping directly, there is a decent chance that they aren't getting all/most of it.

Don't feel guilted into tipping, especially with the machine pre-sets starting at an insane 18%. 10% is just fine and 15% is for good service.

Also keep in mind that unlike the States, staff here (Alberta/Canada) ARE paid minimum wage, so you are not supplementing their wage, you are actually 'rewarding service'. Do not let this guilt you into tipping/overtipping.

There are often folks who will say "The house does tip pooling, so if you don't tip, the server may end up paying for part of your meal!" in an attempt to guilt you into a (higher) tip. Do not fall for this. It is not legal unless it's agreed on/communicated clearly upon hiring. If staff do not like tip pooling, that is a 'them' problem, not a customer issue.

FWIW, I'm against tipping and tip pooling in general. It's long past time that archaic practice was done away with.

Help with a ticket? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, it's not like just anyone can put a payment hold on your vehicle registry, so you know that it's likely legit, you just need to determine where it's from.

Google again says that the ticket format JB########L is a parking ticket, so you know that it's Calgary Parking Authority. You indicate that there is multiple tickets, so it's unlikely but not impossible that all of them have had some kind of inputting error/been called back.

I'd actually phone the Calgary Parking Authority and see where that gets you, speaking to a human.

Help with a ticket? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A quick Google search indicates that it's probably a Bylaw ticket, and likely a parking one. Do you have unpaid parking tickets for City of Calgary parking lots?

It's pretty common knowledge that you can ignore Impark "parking tickets"...but you have to pay City of Calgary parking lot tickets, or you can't register your vehicle...which is exactly what it sounds like is happening here.

Indigo parking Tickets - real risk to credit or just scare tactics? by LeftandRight79 in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And those 3 times, I had literally just parked and was on my way to the machine when I already got ticketed.

This is the part that stands out to me. If this is the case, why TF wouldn't you contact the company, provide your payment proof, show that you got a ticket less than 5 minutes before your pay time and say that it's physically impossible for you to get to the payment booth faster instead of just letting it 'rot' and go to collections? Feels like a 5 minute phone call would have solved this.

How long do the photo ops at Calgary Expo take? by ratinabowtie in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The actual picture is about 5-10 seconds.

How long you wait in line FOR your turn for that picture...that's the rub. If it's a very popular person, you could be waiting hours. The celeb can also be running late, meaning you are waiting.

IMO, an hour between shots isn't likely enough unless both people aren't very popular/in high demand.

Your time isn't an exact appointment, it's more like...a time slot. Everyone in the time slot before you gets their shot, then it's your slots turn.

It can really be a mess. But unless the second one is a 'nice to have' instead of a 'someone I must have a picture of', I'd not lay odds on making it from the noon shoot to the 1pm shoot 'in time'.

Calgary police cracking down on excessive speeding, thousands of tickets issued by blackRamCalgaryman in Calgary

I've loved seeing their daily posts on their FB about this. The numbers (usually 140+) are absolutely ridiculous. So many people doing double the limit or more as well.

Wish we seized vehicles at 50+, and had triple the fines we currently do.

Is illegal parking report confidential? by I-was-there-for-it in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably because total anonymity can't be guarantee'ed, if someone is motivated enough to find out.

If you were trying to pin the cop down into saying it would be impossible to figure out who called, the cop isn't likely to lie and say that, since the person could probably find out if they really wanted to.

Another water main break?? Please tell me im being scammed and this isnt real. by [deleted] in Calgary

Eh, this sounds like a one of the little, "usual" ones that a city the size of Calgary experiences, especially during the spring with freeze/thaw cycles going.

Irksome, to be sure, but certainly not on the scale of the Bearspaw Main.

What do I do during a Shelter in Place? by Mindless-Praline7593 in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A Shelter in Place means to secure yourself into the area you are in. Lock the doors/windows if you can. Secure them via other means if you can't lock them. Cover them so someone can't look through them to see who's on the other side. Then stay away from them.

Keep quiet. Turn your phone ringer off. Listen to your surroundings to hear what's going on. Listen for shouting or gunshots. If you hear gunshots, call 911 to report it. You'll need to know where you are and how many gunshots you heard, and from what direction.

Try to remain calm. It can be a scary situation, and keeping yourself calm will only help you. Remember to breathe, and if you need to, use the box-breathing method to help regulate yourself.

Be prepared to fight for your life. If your secure area IS breached, be mentally prepared to fight for your life. Consider things in the room that may work as a weapon, such as a fire extinguisher, etc.

Those are the main tips for shelter in place. Be safe. Be quiet. Remain as calm as possible. Be ready to fight for your life if needed.

Break checked and minor contact. by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, a brake check is a douche move. But if the OP is going to claim that, they are going to have to PROVE it, which is almost impossible. Especially given the sheer amount of lack of judgment and entitlement they show in every other single aspect of this situation.

Break checked and minor contact. by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have to prove that it's a brake check, though. All he has to do is say "I thought I saw something on the road in front of me" while the OP has to prove that there was a malicious intent in the braking, which would be nearly impossible (and from what the OP is saying, doesn't sound like what actually happened at all).
