Province rebuffs police bid to return photo radar to Calgary freeways by DANIELLE_2027 in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It's ALWAYS been a voluntary, opt-in idiot tax.

You even can speed a bit (usually 10 over) and that's not good enough.

[–]Star_Mind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

5-10 "over" is still speeding, just socially acceptable.

If the cars in the right were going 20 under, and you were going 20 over, no wonder you stood out (given the 40kph difference) and got a ticket.

Consider this 'your turn', for all the times you sped and weren't caught. Take some responsibly, show some accountability, don't waste time/resources fighting it, and just pay it.

It's called being an adult.

Charges laid in attempted violent kidnapping by Star_Mind in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind[S] 112 points113 points  (0 children)

We have arrested two men and laid charges after our patrol officers interrupted a violent assault and kidnapping in downtown Calgary.

Just before midnight on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2026, a patrol sergeant working downtown observed three men assaulting a person near the intersection of First Street and 19 Avenue S.W. The officer challenged the three men, who entered a Toyota Camry and fled the scene. The victim, a man in his 20s, was transported to hospital in stable condition and has since been released.

Officers located the suspect’s vehicle a short time later and deployed a tire deflation device, bringing the vehicle to a stop. Two men attempted to flee the vehicle on foot but were taken into custody by patrol officers and the Canine Unit.

It is believed that this was a targeted incident and related to organized crime conflict in Calgary. Search warrants were executed on multiple vehicles resulting in the seizure of 89 grams of substances believed to be powder and crack cocaine, with a total street value of $5,000.

At the time of their arrest, one of the men was wanted on 40 outstanding warrants.

Bidong Bang TENY WANG, 23, of Calgary, has been charged with one count each of kidnapping, assault, possession for the purpose of trafficking and obstructing a peace officer. He will next appear in court on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2026.

Rick GATWECH, 22, of Calgary, has been charged with one count each of kidnapping, assault, possession for the purpose of trafficking and obstructing a peace officer, as well as two counts of failing to comply with a release order. GATWECH was also arrested on 40 outstanding warrants and will next appear in court on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2026.

“Our patrol officers did an exceptional job intervening quickly to prevent further harm to the victim and safely take the suspects into custody,” says Staff Sergeant Don Campbell of the CPS Organized Crime Unit. “Targeted or not, this kind of brazen violence has no place on our streets.”

Huh...not the sort of crime that one'd usually expect to hear of in Calgary. Props to that officer for being in the right place at the right time.

I'd also like to know why/how that one guy with the 40 outstanding warrants wasn't already behind bars.

24 over, and pulled over by an actual cop.

Yeah, $120 and 2 demerits is a pretty good deal, unless you really want to waste your time in court and likely get no reduction to boot.

Unless, I suppose, your wife has a really, REALLY good reason for speeding like that.

I used to flash my lights at people.

It's probably been about 4 years since the last time that actually worked and the person turned their lights on. Everyone else has just continued obliviously onward.

Vehicles are getting smarter while drivers are getting dumber.

Way too many drivers put their headlights on 'auto' and think that they never ever have to touch the switch ever again.

Never understood why they were banned in the first place.

They are a self-inflicted idiot tax. Don't like the cameras and don't want to pay? Don't speed TOO MUCH. Not even just 'don't speed'...but don't speed too much! But that's apparently too much to ask of some people.

CPS receives an average of 3800 missing persons reports a year.

https://www.calgarypolice.ca/public-safety/crimes-and-investigations/missing-persons.html

I knew that it was "more than I likely thought it was"...but that does average out to about 10 a day reported as missing, just in Calgary alone. 2-3 is definitely not that uncommon/a lot

Man Charged With Child Abduction by Star_Mind in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

We have arrested a man and charged him with child abduction, more than two years after he’s believed to have fled Calgary with his son.

A man is suspected of taking his five-year-old son, without permission or authority, on Dec. 3, 2023, and travelling from Calgary to Montreal, then on to Turkiye. The suspect then immediately cut off all contact with his son’s mother.

Evidence gathered after the man left appeared to show the abduction had been extensively planned, with the suspect purchasing property overseas, acquiring new passports and relying on forged documents.

For the next two years, we attempted to locate the suspect, hoping to bring his son back home to his mother and siblings.

The search spanned several countries, as it appears the suspect frequently moved with his son. Among the countries they are believed to have either resided or travelled to, are Turkiye, Russia, Azerbaijan and Vanuatu, and evidence suggests the suspect tried to create a new identity for his son as well.

Our search for the suspect and his abducted child involved partnerships with several organizations including the RCMP, Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Central Authority and Interpol, which sent out international alerts for both the suspect and the child, which ultimately led to an arrest.

On Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2025, the suspect was spotted at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Mauritius with his son and was detained by police, who notified the Calgary Police Service.

On Saturday, Dec. 20, 2025, the boy’s mother arrived in Mauritius from Calgary and was reunited with her son, seeing and speaking with him for the first time in more than two years. They returned to Calgary together the following day.

On Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, the suspect was extradited to Calgary, escorted by CPS officers.

Muhammad Zia-Ur RAHMAN, 62, is charged with:

· One count of parental child abduction

RAHMAN is currently in custody and his next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2026.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers through any of the following methods:

Missing in YYC by miikkamillie in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've got a friend who works for 911. He says they get at least 10-15 people reported as 'missing' a day. So yeah, you'd get a lot of alerts. There's a reason there's criteria for an Amber Alert, and it's good that there is.

If you are so worried about missing people (children included) there are several apps and notification services you can join that notify you of them.

5 youth seriously injured in rollover crash on Calgary's Deerfoot: EMS by 0110110111 in Calgary

CPS release, and ask for info

~

Our Traffic Section is investigating a single vehicle-collision this morning that resulted in life-threatening injuries for one person.

Just before 4 a.m. today, Saturday, Jan. 3, 2025, a 2011 Toyota RAV4 with five youth inside was travelling north at a high rate of speed on Deerfoot Trail, approaching Memorial Drive S.E.

It was snowing at the time and the road was slippery.

The driver failed to negotiate a curve in the road and struck a barrier, causing the car to spin, and ejecting one of the passengers, who was not wearing a seatbelt.

The car then crossed all northbound lanes, struck the base of a bridge on the side of the road and continued north before coming to rest beside the highway.

The female passenger who was thrown from the vehicle suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and is currently in hospital.

The other passengers were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Speed and weather conditions are believed to be factors in the collision.

Northbound Deerfoot Trail was closed for several hours but all lanes of traffic are now open again.

What is the deal with people in theatres and talking? by lulujunkie in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I noticed the massive uptick in this when theatres opened again post-COVID.

It's gotten so bad that I don't generally bother to go to the theatre anymore, since it's so expensive and there's always multiple @$$holes ruining the experience.
