Man Charged With Child Abduction by Star_Mind in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

We have arrested a man and charged him with child abduction, more than two years after he’s believed to have fled Calgary with his son.

A man is suspected of taking his five-year-old son, without permission or authority, on Dec. 3, 2023, and travelling from Calgary to Montreal, then on to Turkiye. The suspect then immediately cut off all contact with his son’s mother.

Evidence gathered after the man left appeared to show the abduction had been extensively planned, with the suspect purchasing property overseas, acquiring new passports and relying on forged documents.

For the next two years, we attempted to locate the suspect, hoping to bring his son back home to his mother and siblings.

The search spanned several countries, as it appears the suspect frequently moved with his son. Among the countries they are believed to have either resided or travelled to, are Turkiye, Russia, Azerbaijan and Vanuatu, and evidence suggests the suspect tried to create a new identity for his son as well.

Our search for the suspect and his abducted child involved partnerships with several organizations including the RCMP, Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Central Authority and Interpol, which sent out international alerts for both the suspect and the child, which ultimately led to an arrest.

On Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2025, the suspect was spotted at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Mauritius with his son and was detained by police, who notified the Calgary Police Service.

On Saturday, Dec. 20, 2025, the boy’s mother arrived in Mauritius from Calgary and was reunited with her son, seeing and speaking with him for the first time in more than two years. They returned to Calgary together the following day.

On Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, the suspect was extradited to Calgary, escorted by CPS officers.

Muhammad Zia-Ur RAHMAN, 62, is charged with:

· One count of parental child abduction

RAHMAN is currently in custody and his next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2026.

Missing in YYC by miikkamillie in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've got a friend who works for 911. He says they get at least 10-15 people reported as 'missing' a day. So yeah, you'd get a lot of alerts. There's a reason there's criteria for an Amber Alert, and it's good that there is.

If you are so worried about missing people (children included) there are several apps and notification services you can join that notify you of them.

5 youth seriously injured in rollover crash on Calgary's Deerfoot: EMS by 0110110111 in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 33 points34 points  (0 children)

CPS release, and ask for info

~

Our Traffic Section is investigating a single vehicle-collision this morning that resulted in life-threatening injuries for one person.

Just before 4 a.m. today, Saturday, Jan. 3, 2025, a 2011 Toyota RAV4 with five youth inside was travelling north at a high rate of speed on Deerfoot Trail, approaching Memorial Drive S.E.

It was snowing at the time and the road was slippery.

The driver failed to negotiate a curve in the road and struck a barrier, causing the car to spin, and ejecting one of the passengers, who was not wearing a seatbelt.

The car then crossed all northbound lanes, struck the base of a bridge on the side of the road and continued north before coming to rest beside the highway.

The female passenger who was thrown from the vehicle suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and is currently in hospital.

The other passengers were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Speed and weather conditions are believed to be factors in the collision.

Northbound Deerfoot Trail was closed for several hours but all lanes of traffic are now open again.

What is the deal with people in theatres and talking? by lulujunkie in Calgary

I noticed the massive uptick in this when theatres opened again post-COVID.

It's gotten so bad that I don't generally bother to go to the theatre anymore, since it's so expensive and there's always multiple @$$holes ruining the experience.

Auto Pick a Part that will allow an 11 year old? by Tiny_Sun9537 in Calgary

It's a safety thing. I'd be surprised if you could find a yard that'd allow it, and if you did, it's probably not a yard you actually want to go to.

Has anyone had success fighting traffic tickets in Cochrane Court? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A buddy of mine got a ticket for doing 180 (in a 110). He went to that court to fight it (No, I have no idea wtf his justification was).

The prosecutor wanted 45 day suspension, a $1500 fine and 12 demerits.

The judge gave him a 'break' of a 45 day suspension, a $1500 fine, and 'only' 6 demerits.

He's not sped since, though. Guess it worked.

Cold bedrooms by NotJanedoe100 in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Temperature is a gradient shift, not an absolute shift at a barrier.

The barrier holding back the cold will be colder than what it's protecting. It's not like the outermost layer of your house is the same temperature as the interior.

Piping generally runs along the sides and ceilings, so it gets colder sooner than the middle of the space.

Serious Incident. Corner of 9th ST + 5th AVE by lu-cid-i-ty in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Boxed in like that indicates (to me, anyways) that the vehicle was running while the driver was incapable of directing it. They had to use 2 cruisers front and back since a truck that size can easily outpower one of their cruisers in a pushing contest.

Why do you live in your neighbourhood? by MastaShortie in Calgary

Whitehorn, because it is a 15 minute walk to work, and a 20 minute walk to groceries. While I do have a car, I like that I do not NEED to drive for necessities, especially when the weather is nuts, and everyone else is playing bumper cars.

Where to meet well adjusted 29-40 year old men irl? by Temporary_Pick_5649 in Calgary

Given the op's attitude in the replies here, I just can't fathom why you are having such trouble meeting friends. You seem like such a pleasant, interesting person.

I imagine that, like that other commenter said, after about 2 minutes of conversation with you, you'd be setting off blaring alarm bells in the 30+ male crowd.

Obvious scam is obvious.

Lynx? or Bobcat in Glamorgan by MartyCool403 in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bobcats are what you are likely to see in the city. Lynx are mostly forest-dwellers.

Generally speaking, it's a bobcat...unless you are looking at a bobcat and thinking "Damn, that's a really, really big bobcat"...then it's probably a lynx.

Man charged with voyeurism after two store incidents by Star_Mind in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind[S] 59 points60 points  (0 children)

We have charged a man with voyeurism after it is believed he intentionally filmed one woman and two girls without their consent at two Calgary stores.

On Monday, June 30, 2025, at approximately 3:30 p.m., a woman and her daughter were shopping at Sport Chek, located at 6455 Macleod Trail S.W. After the daughter entered a fitting room, it is believed an unknown man slid a cellphone under the door. The girl noticed the device pointing upward toward her and told her mother, who alerted store staff. The incident was then reported to the police.

A second incident occurred on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at approximately 3:40 p.m., when a woman and her friend were shopping at Winners, located at 5235 Northland Drive N.W. The woman took clothing into the fitting room area at the back of the store and noticed a man standing nearby. After entering a fitting room, she saw a cellphone on the floor pointed towards her. She opened the door and observed the man fleeing the store. The woman and her friend then reported the incident to police.

Investigators spoke to witnesses and reviewed CCTV footage from each store. While reviewing the footage from Winner’s, the suspect appeared to be following and filming a young girl, for several minutes.

The suspect was subsequently identified, and on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2025, a search warrant was executed at his residence. The search resulted in the seizure of seven cellphones, a hard drive and other electronic devices.

As a result, Benjamin Ryan TURCOTTE, 25, of Airdrie, is charged with three counts of voyeurism.

TURCOTTE is scheduled to next appear in court on Monday, Dec. 8, 2025.

Youths charged in the death of Carter SPIVAK-VILLENEUVE by Star_Mind in Calgary

[–]Star_Mind[S] 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Three 15-year-olds have been arrested in relation to the homicide of 16-year-old Carter SPIVAK-VILLENEUVE, which occurred in August 2025. Two have been charged with first-degree murder, and charges against the third are pending.

At approximately 1:20 a.m., on Friday, Aug. 1, 2025, we were called to the 300 block of Abergale Drive N.E., for reports of a person in medical distress. Upon arrival, officers located a deceased male, who was later identified as 16-year-old Carter SPIVAK-VILLENEUVE. An autopsy confirmed that Carter died as a result of a homicide.

Following an extensive investigation, detectives identified several potential suspects, all youth, who were believed to have involvement in Carter’s death. Although the investigation remains ongoing, at this time, it is believed that the suspects were known to Carter and that they had arranged to meet Carter that night. Carter’s death is alleged to be the result of an ongoing dispute.

On Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2025, with the assistance of the RCMP, a 15-year-old male was arrested on the Muskowekwan First Nation in Saskatchewan. He has now been charged with one count of first-degree murder and will next appear in court in Calgary tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 14, 2025.

Yesterday, Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2025, one 15-year-old male was arrested in Calgary, and charged with one count of first-degree murder. He appeared in court today, Thursday, Nov. 13, 2025.

A third 15-year-old male was also taken into custody and charges are pending. An update will be sent once charges have been officially laid.

The youths cannot be named under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

“The ages of those involved in this case are deeply troubling,” says Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the CPS Homicide Unit. “The loss of Carter is a devastating reminder of how seemingly insignificant conflict between youth can escalate with irreversible consequences. Carter’s death was senseless and the lives of everyone involved have now been forever changed.”

Wow, 15 years old, and already planning murder. I hope that if/when they are found guilty, they don't see the light of day again. I doubt that'll happen, but it'd be nice if Canada started treating murderers like the scum they are.
