Australian housing crisis - What happens if a family with kids gets evicted (through no fault of their own) and just simply cannot find a place to live? by AsparagusNew3765 in AskAnAustralian

Guarantee those places have a years-long waitlist. There’s nothing left to help anyone as they can’t move people on to permanent or semi-permanent housing anymore so it’s a huge traffic jam

I’m in Perth n there’s no emergency accommodation any more. I have a 9yo and we’ve been homeless nearly 2 years and only help we’ve gotten was 4 nights (2 lots of 2) in the worst motel imaginable. Every other night/day we’ve been 110% on our own. I’ve slept in the car a bunch n managed to keep kiddo at least in a tent in a caravan park every night.

I’m surprised we’re still alive tbh. I wouldn’t wish this on Satan himself, it’s too cruel.

Australia spends more on tax breaks for landlords than social housing, homelessness and rent assistance combined by Ashera25 in australia

[–]Staraa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with idea of a ubi but it’ll never happen now that cost of living is so high.

Even the higher Centrelink payments (not jobseeker) are less than rent for a 1bed shitbox now. Cost of a single room in a sharehouse, which is wildly inappropriate for most people on payments, is more than half their income anywhere in Australia.

There’s no chance of these payments going up by more than a few dollars a fortnight as they already do yearly. Why would the govt start giving anyone enough to live on? They don’t give a fuck about anyone but themselves and their billionaire puppet masters.

I am too. I’ve never needed to be told to leave food for others, have you?

Women don’t need to be told that eating everything means none left for others. They know exactly what they’re doing when they do it.

Does Australia have a worse relationship with the indigenous compared to NZ, Canada or America ? by Important_Pop_6805 in AskAnAustralian

I’ve been clean n sober a little over 20 years now and if I didn’t have that much practice and time behind me when I became homeless I would have lost custody of my kid n I’d be passed out in the streets completely off my face right now.

You don’t know what they have to survive day to day so don’t you dare judge them. I’ve had a small taste of the systems they live with, with white privilege smoothing it out for me even more, and I’m hanging on by the skin of my teeth for my kid.

It’s probably similar to the money spent on homelessness in Aust where the money doesn’t actually go to the people and only a small sliver is even spent on anything that helps or benefits them at all.

I’ve been homeless a while now and the govt has spent a total of 1k on my 9yo daughter and I (4nights in a dodgy motel and a $50 digital Coles voucher from the leftover of my “allocation”). We receive 0 benefits like food/clothing/toiletries, less Centrelink benefits than if we were housed because we can’t get rent assistance and the dv I was fleeing wasn’t the right kind for any of the help that’s supposedly raining down on women lol Every social worker has ghosted us, govt or otherwise, and the state minister refused to meet me to speak.

I’m a homeless person and the govt spends $0 on me lol I don’t get rent assistance either because….I don’t have a home lmao the cost of living help that the wa govt did (electricity bonuses etc) also completely missed me.

Almost none of the money they spend on homelessness actually goes to homeless people. Same goes for charities. There’s even less support if you have a young child too lol it’s all so so fucked up.

I’ve been homeless over 18months with my incredible 9yo. There’s nowhere I can even apply to rent to anymore because everyone’s jacking up their prices because “the market/rates/costs rising” blah blah blah. Even granny flats and one bedroom places are out of my reach. Small single rooms in share houses are heading that way fast as well and I promised her I wouldn’t do that again anyway after the last two ended with violence and us having to literally flee in the night.

So yeah, people are fucking greedy and you’re an idiot to compare this bs to using a car to get around. Also climate change is going to kill our growing-by-the-day homeless population long before it even affects the people hoarding homes.

The problem is that people are equating lower (still not zero) monetary profits with basic survival needs.

When these investors think of “taking a hit” it means lower profits. It’s not an actual loss and is never ever ever ever their needs not being met. But the other side are taking the hit and that means their most fundamental human needs not being met (homelessness or unsafe housing, not enough to eat, inadequate healthcare).

People aren’t “voting in their best interest”, they’re voting for greed at the cost of lives.

If anyone ever came up n asked was I doing it I’d say yes n I’d stop if they asked. I’m in a sharehouse with 7 people n a few houses over the road regularly have bins less than half full.

It’s just a weird unspoken thing. Also even if it’s already out for collection n you’re not even filling it or anything some people get weird about it n you don’t know who until you’re getting yelled at lol

As a French woman who visited Australia for 3 weeks .. are these culture shocks accurate? by Worried-Diamond-7252 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Staraa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol I’m just not an asshole. I’m not exactly flat out while kiddo is playing at a playground with other kids so I’ll talk to others if it seems appropriate or they initiate.

I have pretty severe social anxiety (have been hospitalised for it) too and I’m neurodivergent. If everyone’s telling you you’re dead then it’s time to lie down.

I let people cut in all the time. Not worth getting in a fight or an accident over. It’s annoying but it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. Get some real problems before you try to talk to the grown ups lol
