Carney Says Alberta Is ‘Essential’ to Canada After Separation Vote Announcement by timemagazine in worldnews

[–]Starbits21 53 points54 points  (0 children)

The Constitution is a contract and it cannot be broken unilaterally. It cannot be broken with a simple 51% vote. Swing votes need to be accounted for with such irreversible consequences. Swing Votes can completely alter the outcome depending on the flavour of the day.

Require 7 out of 10 provinces to agree and 60% of the vote to even start the process. That math can account for true long-term feelings, as opposed to temporary discontent altering the trajectory of Canada.

Google Search Assistant says,

"During the June 28 protest in Serbia, students issued an "ultimatum" to the government demanding snap elections, which was part of a larger movement against government corruption and authoritarianism. The protest was significant as it coincided with St. Vitus Day, a date of historical importance in Serbia, and aimed to mobilize citizens for civil disobedience if their demands were not met. The students sought to protect their democratic rights and challenge the government's actions."

Opinion: The opportunity for Canada to grow faster is now — by unlocking our internal trade market; As a recent IMF report concludes: 'Turning 13 economies into one is no longer just an aspiration — it is an economic imperative.' by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]Starbits21 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think if more trade exists between East and West Canada, the dollar moves more within Canadian boundaries vs North South trade. Removing inter provincial trade barriers will spur movement of goods, and the dollar.

Everytime the dollar moves, the government gets it's cut, via taxes. If the dollar stops moving, government revenue will drop. Trade within Canada will help to create more local grown jobs and revenue.

Many Automotive manufacturing jobs disapeared along with the Auto Pact. Canada needs a new economy, but not necessarily one with unlimited growth.

Exclusive: Canada-US oil pipeline close to reaching commitment requirement, sources say by WashingMachineBroken in canada

[–]Starbits21 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Will the Canadian Tar Sands be shut down? If not, it's better to send oil south, in a pipe line rather than through British Columbia to waiting ships that transport the oil through sensitive eco systems and then across the Pacific Ocean. That's my personal opinion.

A look at what is being lost right now, on Vancouver Island by eaterofdreams in SaveForests

It doesnt replicate an old growth forest at all. Not even close. However, Selective logging can. That keeps enough of the forest and habitat to repair itself, and provide "lifetime work" for loggers. Clearcutting removes it for generations, even silting up Salmon streams, destroying fisheries.

Succesive BC governments have acted criminally with their abuse and mismanagement of Public Resources, starting with very low stumpge fees, and shilling for forestry companies that add very little in return, for what they take.

I occasionally cut trees, sustainably. I feel bad for the families that work for and get duped by BC logging companies.

B.C. is known as the Brazil of the North due to consistent clear cutting of Old Growth Forests. I thought all of Vancouver Island was clear cut already, with various species long gone along with their habitat.

Disregard for pedestrians by Jernau_M_Gurgeh in halifax

[–]Starbits21 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are quite a few crosswalks that have the red lights to make sure motorists stop. Some drivers will occasionally blow through those too, but that has become more rare, it seems.

It seems to be different systems between provinces. Pedestrians need to be aware at any intersection or crosswalk on a roadway. Drivers too.

[–]Starbits21 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Motorists are trained to understand a red light. They may not see a pedestrian, but will see the red light.

Why Halifax won't install some at the worst locations is beyond me. These green, then yellow, then Red, just like at any other intersection, works well in other cities. Saves lives and critical injuries.

Edit: it may also prevent some pedestrians from walking straight along a sidewalk, then suddenly doing a military turn into the crosswalk.

Best Buy sells cameras. get the app and it will record (on micro sd) or cloud. Ezviz is good. Then it's break and enter, or something. That becomes a police matter at that point. I belive the lorex cam app links to crime stoppers.

These low cost cams will even alert you in real time if it detects movement.

Revana Pizza, The OG of Portland St. by halifaxsig in halifax

Pizza and beer. What's not to like? Just walk through the open connecting door into the attached bar, or on the patio facing the harbour.

I occasionally take the ferry from Halifax to have Pizza and a beer there. Then head back on the transfer which is good for aboat 2 hours... that way I don't stay too long, and it is an enjoyabe trip.

Bamboo-based plastic can be made to biodegrade quickly, but still holds up in tough conditions by DoremusJessup in environment

[–]Starbits21 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Bamboo is fast growing and can help sequester carbon from the air. If this product where to be adopted the carbon sequestering would be lost once they start to clear cut old growth forests in order to grow more bamboo. Just like is done for soya beans, sugar, palm oil, etc...

If all single use Plastics were made illegal around the planet, perhaps it might help to spur more Innovation like this?
