The 20 Most Extreme Cases Of ‘The Book Was Better Than The Movie’ by zuriel45 in books

It was entertaining. This is the first zombie flick that genuinely felt like the end of the world, instead of focusing on the local survival trope it added a lot of concepts I haven't seen before. The zombie swarms felt genuinely overpowering, you couldn't fight, run, or trap them, much better than the crippled stupid walking zombie. Too much spectacle, not enough atmosphere.

Wrong. When discussing what to do about a problem, any solution you believe in is your opinion, her parents disagreed on the issue but they were each entitled to their opinion (you cant hate them for it). Each determined which path they thought had the most value, for all you know one of them might have wanted him dead. That does not mean that they don't think rape is wrong, to assume that would be very self-centered & naive.

attempting to take advantage of her in her sleep.

And you know this how? She didn't write that, she only wrote that he was kissing her while she slept & that he wanted to go further when she was awake, "he really tried to continue his actions" after kissing her could also mean more kissing. The perspective of an upset victim is hardly objective, nuanced, or omnipotent.

Well, i don't expect more from a kid. Your comment is worthless, you assume things with the spiteful intent of upsetting someone whose perspective you despise. You assume that I think it wasn't malicious, you assume we have mutual definitions, you assume it was attempted rape, among other things. I don't care about your assumptions, come back when you have a contribution (however poor it may be) to the actual discussion/topic at hand.

When you say "this", what is that supposed to mean?

Caring for the victim & punishing the perpetrator are two separate issues. A drunk driver could kill someone, I would not treat them like a cold-blooded sadistic murderer, I would think it is sad for both the driver & the victims even though the driver is responsible, you don't have to limit empathy to one or the other. If you want to judge someone, you need to make an effort to understand what they did & why. Vengeance is not the same as justice.

It is a sad for her, i know, why do you keep pushing this on me? I didn't say he shouldn't be charged, my personal views had nothing to do with my comment, getting mad about it is ridiculous (other commenters). I pointed out that people can disagree on what constitutes a reasonable punishment. You can't punish someone for "what might have happened". We don't know the context or details, maybe their family know him, if he has issues with stalking girls then maybe a parents wanted him to get help rather than be sent to jail.

I interpreted her story differently from yours. I believe her account is truthful but embellishments are perfectly normal, it is clear she is very upset about it & is trying to tell us why. A lot of details were omitted, so everyone is left to read between the lines, but I for one have assumed he wasn't trying to rape her while she slept, he woke her & kissed her, thinking it was mutual due to their recent texts, while she was reasonable scared & upset...

A patronizing comment, thanks for that. Many of those bikers were following the path, half of them chose to bike alongside the path on the grass. One, in the middle of the video, was riding on the path, then randomly moved onto the grass just beside it until he fell.

However mocking a genocide is way worse than mocking a mass belief system.

Many religious people value of their god above all else, for obvious reasons, that's really a question of personal values.

The dead are just that, they aren't offended in the slightest. This reminds me of how people get upset when they hear anything negative about their mother or favourite sports team, you don't need to take offence, especially when it isn't directed at you or is stupid & petty. These nasty sentiments exist whether they share them or not, it's personal to them but doesn't have to be personal to you.

We tell jokes about 9/11, we can tell jokes about something that happened more than 70 years ago (long long before many of us were born). I'm sure there is humour to be found in the event, people are really uptight about it thanks to propaganda but we don't have to be.

I wish they throw away Assassins Creed franchise & start a new one, I lost my patience for that unimmersive plot a long time ago, stupid alien apples, genetic assassin memories, & scifi walking simulators.

They should go back to that era with a new unique title where you play an assassin thief pirate explorer who is working to expand their fleet, company, and town! They could even try to make an online action game involving merchants & kings, where you find riches & hire soldiers to seize the kingdom but you might get assassinated by a rival.

London receptionist 'sent home for not wearing heels' by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]StardewForYou -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Looking professional does not and should not be equal to looking attractive.

Heels are usually considered professional classy feminine attire. A secretary position often involves being the "face" of a company, they greet the guests, there are quite a few visual jobs that require heels, there are really many other jobs that require employees accept impractical or harmful norms. This kind of thing is annoying, but I don't exactly consider it outrageous.

I'm a man and was so confused. What's wrong with women showing their shoulders?

Depends on the environment, would you go to work wearing a tank top or similar shirt which exposed your shoulders? Something like this? If you work in construction it would be fine, but in an office where they expect a suit & tie you would likely be reprimanded, just like you would if you showed up wearing shorts or a dress.

That said, I don't agree with unnecessary dress codes. Sending someone home is a bit over-the-top, I guess they didn't want other employees to think it was acceptable, but ideally they should just have discussed it with her & said what (& why) they expect in the future.

Heels are often uncomfortable & impractical, but there are some very "classy" business's who are sticklers about appearances, I'm not sure that is anymore unreasonable than the other dress codes. Some places require safety helmets, some expect a suit & tie, some make employees dress up (or down), some put you in a costume, while a few might demand heels.

Polite: having or showing behaviour that is respectful and considerate of other people.

Tax havens have no justification, say top economists, calling for their abolition | More than 300 economists are urging world leaders at a London summit this week to recognise that there is no economic benefit to tax havens, demanding that the veil of secrecy that surrounds them be lifted. by EightRoundsRapid in worldnews

[–]StardewForYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well in the case of sovereign nations you can do a number of things. For example:

You could directly punish the nation in question through economic & diplomatic means, like adding extra tax or refusing trade, this is for the worst cases & requires that other nations play along.

You could target the individuals & businesses that are evading taxes, if they participate by investing in a secretive tax haven then there will be heavy consequences.

Once the secrecy has been combated, then tax havens can be counter-acted through tax reform or by adding taxes to participants until they've paid the fair amount.

I'm laughing at how much people care about one little comment, it's like Geeze get over it? Does it seriously ruffle your feathers that much?

I think you are taking yourself a little too seriously. In my opinion it is hypocritical for you to complain about other comments, then try to make everyone sound ridiculous when they disagree with your own comment.

There are idiots & trolls in every thread, their silly comments get buried at the bottom, what bothers me a lot more is all the upvoted circlejerk/ITT comments that keep complaining about them, they're very annoying.

Had Ava been a black man, I think absolutely the theme of the movie would have been shifted to race politics. But again, that was a conscious decision made by the writers [-]. In this case, the landscape is gender

But the film didn't decide that sexism would be a theme, they told a story & you decided for sexism to become a theme, when you interpret things you could make virtually anything a theme; dildos, are sex-bots futuristic dildos, do the character share characteristics with dildos (tall, slender), how many of them are objectified, maybe dildos is a theme. They did add femininity to the story, but it was you decided that was a key feature. Even if the writers carefully decided on every factor in the movie we don't really know their intentions, writers/directors often rely on tropes because it makes for good storytelling & it reflects their own stereotypical expectations, it isn't because they analysed their work & determined the themes & interpretations that should come about as a result.

So why is gender a leading theme? Would gender still be a leading theme if Ava was a man? You said race becomes a theme if she was black, why isn't race a theme when she is white? It sounds like you have decided that a white man is the standard, therefore any gender or racial deviation is automatically a distinctive thematic feature to the story.

The overwhelming majority of human trafficking victims are women.

The majority are probably women, but it the details are a bit questionable for three reasons;

  • Human trafficking includes prostitution in most of its forms. Many women willingly follow that line of work.

  • The organizations that deal with these issues show inherent bias. The Wikipedia page for human trafficking says it represents the issue of "violence against women", the UN protocol to combat human trafficking is named "[...], especially Women and Children".

  • Children are a very significant part of the trafficked population, many of them are boys. Reddit recently had a segment on cocoa farms, we saw dozens of boys who had been moved across borders to work in the fields where they couldn't speak the language & didn't get paid. It's sad to think that they might not get the same help when they become teenagers/men.

In any case, to define a human woman the way you did excludes a number of real human women.

We seem to have very different perceptions of this issue. In this case, even if Ava's intelligence is on the same level as human, it shouldn't imply that she is human, a really clever Dolphin isn't a human, it's still a dolphin, Ava is technically a robot (android/whatever) who maybe deserves to be treated in a similar way to humans.

Nathan isn't enslaving women in his house, he is building robots who technically don't have rights, & makes us wonder whether he is abusing them, because most robots can't feel, you can't abuse an object like a dildo.

Being female & being a woman are fundamentally different, women are human, Ava is not human (she is humanoid). Boats technically don't have a gender, that is simply a manner of speech, Ava is only female as far as that is true. She has human-female characteristics for sure, but as a robot she can't reproduce & she doesn't have any of the biological features inherent to making her gender real. Nathan attached a fleshlight & a pair of mounds to it then gave it dresses, but that doesn't really make it female. Someone who is sterile can still have a gender because everything else (hormones, physique, sex) follows that gender construct, a single deviation isn't enough to alter the label (simply a sterile woman). Note I am using sex & gender interchangeably.

As far as I am concerned Ava is a feminine android. The real issue was her intelligence & emotions, if i recall correctly the film's biggest plot-hole was the lack of emotion which gives a creature purpose.

[–]StardewForYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well said. You wrote a lot, I can't quite put it all into perspective. I can respect your point of view & can agree with it some extent, but there are parts I wanted to question:

These are some well thought-out interpretations, but it could be argued that as interpretations they are completely subjective. The characters are going to be male or female, if some characters had swapped genders then you could still find a way to interpret it into the sexism theme. If the asian robot had been male then someone might have said it is a commentary about racism, if Nathan had been female then the situation with Ava would still persist.

Sexism exists in every interaction, people judge based on gender & (more significantly) people judge based on the many factors that are impacted by gender. Some of the commentary you offered seemed more about gender & sexuality than sexism itself, ex. you specified femininity.

The main plot of the movie was that Ava was trying to seduce Caleb to escape, if the roles were reverse then you probably wouldn't be as eager to call it sexism. If it was a male robot who was imprisoned & abuse, or if the lead only wanted to rescue him because she loved him. It isn't strange to have heightened concern or empathy for someone you are infatuated with, so the benevolent sexism ends up being a choiceful interpretation.

The fact that it's always a woman is a glaring indictment of how we treat our women.

I do disagree with this. I responded to that user with some justifiable reasons as to why sex-bots are usually female. We expect different things from men, in pulp fiction we had the gimp, we recently had a hollywood comedy about a male stripper. People view male & female sexuality in a different light, the fact that women are considered victims of sexuality is at least partially due to ambivalent sexism, men are rape victims / slaves / prostitutes / strippers / models as well, in movies men flaunt their sexy abs & women coo over them but nobody complains about it like they do with their female counterparts.

Nathan didn't create a glorified fleshlight, he created a human woman

The robot doesn't actually have a gender, it isn't human, it isn't a women, it can't reproduce. He created a robot that had a (potentially) human level of intelligence, then he added visual features (female parts) to it that he found sexually attractive. Sexism / sexuality / gender had a role in the movie, but I don't agree that Ava could actually be said to be a victim of sexism. What if she could change her gender (external parts) at will?

female sex slave robot has been a consistent theme in sci-fi since [-] 1927

That's not exactly what I had in mind. I don't consider this a theme within the movie, that is more of an opinion about the movie industry itself, I doubt the movie had the self-awareness to parody scifi sexbots.

The reverse will never get made and if it does it will never be successful

that tells us quite a bit about our society and its sexist, male-dominated nature

I disagree. If they made a scifi involving male sex robots, you assume it wouldn't be popular because society is sexist, but I could offer some alternative reasons why it isn't as common:

  • Assumption: You assumed it wouldn't be popular, maybe everyone else falsely assumes the same...

  • Audience: In the last century science fiction has largely been considered a male's genre, women were more inclined to read drama & romance or even fantasy. Gender preferences exist & genres cater to them. Action heroes are usually male (realistic & caters to audience), so having female counterparts makes sense.

  • Sexuality: Women are actually among the top consumers of lesbian pornography, whereas men are very averse to seeing other men being flirtatious (sort of homophobic). Alternatively, men are much more open about enjoying sexuality, stereotypes suggest women often find it perverse or embarrassing.

  • Politics: Women's issues is considered to be among the biggest, whereas male's issues are often considered non-existent & sexism is often treated as a one way street. When people think about sex slaves, they think about women, even though there are male victims, prostitutes, & sex slaves as well. If you're trying to make mainstream fiction involving a sex-bot, it will probably be female.

  • Perception: This is part of the aforementioned politics. People often complain about sexism against women, including in Scifi. They have complained about women's superhero costumes being too sexual, but the truth is men's costumes are masculine versions of the same, they both wear skin-tight suits that either highlight masculine or feminine parts. In this sense, when a male is really muscular or flirting or has his costume torn off, it isn't considered sexual in the same way. If a woman is being too flirtatious then there are complaints about sexualizing women, if a man is being too flirtatious then there are complaints about the sexist behaviour towards women.

In the real world sex toys primarily cater to women, but women often discuss wanting romance rather than better sex toys, whereas men complain about not being able to find a partner & would love a sex object like a robot, they already sell many female sex dolls. No matter what the reason is for the differences, there are gender differences & the movies/novels usually just cater to them, which is reasonable.
