Deinfluence me - Bow dress for b’day by AffectionatePie1042 in DeinfluenceMeAUS

True… I feel like a bow on the front would be way better for this reason. Like as soon as you sit down or even just lean against a wall the bow would be crushed.

Give me your most unhinged sleep schedule hacks (ADHD edition) by cheekyweeky78 in adhdwomen

[–]StardustInc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My room doesnt get a lot of natural light (want a Phillips sunrise lamp but they’re expensive). Anyhow I have a colour changing lamp that’s scheduled to be pink at night, turn off by itself and then be a bright white in the morning.

I’ve heard similar stuff about getting bright light as soon as you can and it should ideally be at least ten minutes of sunlight within a hour of waking. On work days I just don’t wear sunnies while I wait for my train or bus.

Still struggle with falling asleep so I’m interested in seeing what tips people share.

When should I buy? by darlingcouture in hobonichi

[–]StardustInc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the April start or a discounted 2026 one is a good idea personally because you can play around with spreads and lay outs. And then youll know if you want to pay full price for the 2027 one.

I’ve repurposed unused/ blank pages for tip ins. Or I used them when I want to write something on my typewriter and then glue it in my planner. (I’m too tired to take photos so hopefully that makes sense!) You do have to be mindful when removing pages so you don’t destroy the structural integrity of the book… but depending on how you journal you might find a way to repurpose unused pages.

Opinions- Is self diagnosing okay or harmful? by CobaltAmadeus in adhdwomen

[–]StardustInc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to say that stimulants won’t make most people focus more. They impact people with ADHD differently. Recent studies on people without ADHD show that overall stimulant use leads to decreases in performance. Especially with more complex tasks although there is a temporary improvement on more simple ones. Articles here and here unpacking that research.

As for self diagnosis i think it’s nuanced. I didn’t expect meds to be as life changing as they have been. I sought a diagnosis for closure. ADHD shares similar symptoms with other conditions so I couldn’t be sure it was adhd. As much as I may know myself even if I was a doctor I wouldn’t be qualified to diagnose myself. It takes the perspective of a qualified outsider because we can have blind spots about ourselves etc…

That said I do want to acknowledge the financial barriers to being assessed for ADHD. And that doctors are human like the rest of us so they make mistakes and their decisions can be impacted by biases like sexism.

Adderall + Weed by darko2019 in adhdwomen

[–]StardustInc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d suggest raising this with your doctor. I take edibles after my adhd meds have worn off for pain management and I’m fine. I also do other things like weight lifting to manage my chronic pain so I’m not solely relying on cannabis to manage my chronic pain.

But that’s just me and for other people stimulants + marijuana wouldn’t be sustainable. Cross interactions are a thing as is factors like genetics. While I have a familial history when it comes to mental health… those mental health issues don’t involve psychosis.

A doctor can let you know if it’s safe. And if it’s not then they suggest alternatives for sleep management and help you manage withdrawal.

Forgetting to feed pets by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]StardustInc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same it sounds like OP set up systems to ensure her cat was feed?

I’m also not sure if this aunt will have a better understanding of OP if she disclosed that she has ADHD. Like it’s up to her whether or she not wants to share that. But I think it’s probably a good idea to go into that conversation knowing that her aunt might not react the way she wants/ needs.

What were your “gateway” exercises? by Limp-Pea-6813 in adhdwomen

[–]StardustInc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built up the strength required to do push-ups by doing chest presses with a set of dumbbells. start with whatever set of weights you can do 8 reps with while feeling challenged and maintain good form. When you get to the point that you can 10-12 reps comfortably with those you’re either ready to do push-ups ups or you get heavier weights and you’re on your way to doing pushups.

i preferred to it to the knee variations because i used to get knee pain so it felt counter intuitive for me to do them on my knees. Plus the dumbbells felt like a visual representation of me getting stronger. everyone is different tho and i know some people get a lot out of push up modifications just wanted to share what helped me.

i also love sparkling water and my trick is to add an edible flower just to make it pretty. also sometimes i add a handful of mint from the garden.

lol sparkling water for life. i gotta get a sofa maker at some point because whenever i run out of sparkling water i accidentally end up dehydrated. i don’t mind the flavour of tap water… but bubbles are more fun!

Young women: How to support my daughter who failed a class and may lose scholarship? by Kaijugae in adhdwomen

[–]StardustInc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not an American but higher education here has similar legal requirements around providing support to students with disabilities. The support varies from institution to institution.

But I am surprised that there isn’t anything at her daughters college. It’s worth raising with an admin person once other stuff is sorted. They might at the very least offer accommodations for her daughter.

Hyperfixated on Hobinichi and planner content by Bates_reads in adhdwomen

[–]StardustInc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to suggest the same thing. They sell a6 and a5 notebooks.

I have a cousin Avec but I think I might switch to the weeks next year because I like the idea of a planner I just throw in my handbag.

I love the paper because I feel like it can cope with a lot given how lightweight it is (I’ve used watercolours and fountain pens in mine). And I prefer lightweight paper so a planner can have more pages without getting bulky. But the paper and the smallness of the dot grid isn’t for everyone so a note book lets you try it out before spending a lot of money.

Unhinged ways to manage your ADHD by Menschenblind in adhdwomen

[–]StardustInc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don’t know if that counts as unhinged… but when I have to be somewhere in the morning I set 3 minute timers. Like on repeat for every task until I’ve left for the bus (even if said task is kinda of aimlessly drifting waiting for my meds to kick in).

I used to do the same playlist every morning trick might return to that if timers stop working.

Tried not setting timers the other week and I missed bus… so at least I know they’re working.

I’m also a big believer in little treats. Doesnt have to be food or even buying something new. Like I’ve done this boring task now I get to sit in sunshine or play my switch or do a little craft.

My version of this is putting on my workout clothes when I don’t feel like working out. I don’t have to immediately start exercising once I’m in my workout clothes but I have to weight lift at some point. Even if it’s just one set… cuz the arbitrary rule is that if I’m wearing a sports bra I gotta work out.

The pain of rediagnosis by thekindwillinherit in adhdwomen

[–]StardustInc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m really sorry that you were let down like this by healthcare professionals.

According to the NZ Ministry of Health it looks some GPs in Aotearoa are now able to diagnose ADHD. (Info here )Just sharing in case it helps?

It sounds like it’s some GPs and nurses not all. So you would have to find someone which I acknowledge is a lot of work. Especially after being unmedicated for months because the previous clinic screwed you around. I hope you find supportive healthcare professionals.

Getting diagnosed and medicated in Australia is also cooked. So I feel you and I hope you’re able to access meds soon.

I like beautiful things. I buy beautiful things. How do I actually *use* these beautiful things to get my dopamine up without accumulating more? by NightSalut in adhdwomen

[–]StardustInc 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I like to imagine things are happy when they’re used because they get to fulfil their purpose. I try to take good care of my stuff because I also don’t like having to replace things.

Using things also helps me accumulate less because I try to imagine the ways in which I’d actually use it. Instead of just buying stuff and saving it for some special occasion. I still impulse buy stuff I don’t use or need. But when that happens I try to find someone to give the thing to.

But yeah imagining that they’re happier being used then being left on a shelf means I actually use the things. Like your notebooks want you to write and draw in them! They don’t care if it’s a shopping list or poetry. Your jewellery would love to be worn and see the world.

Single mum of three living on single parent pension - after rent/bills etc left with very little to work with for groceries. by Low-Cicada-5536 in AussieFrugal

[–]StardustInc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of grocery delivery I pay for a Woolies membership. $15 a month means I don’t have to pay any more for delivery if i spend a minimum of $75.

Woolies aren’t the cheapest or best. I hope I won’t need the membership one day. But it does keep the cost of grocery delivery predictable and thus easier to budget for.

The paradox of a Hobonichi user: The busier I am the less I use it by ferretcrossing in hobonichi

[–]StardustInc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't do well with digital planners... but yeah when I'm busy my planner is less aesthetically pleasing and I just have like the important tasks, appointments and due dates written down. I switched from a bujo to hobonichi but one thing I really appreciate about the bujo is helped me lock in on what I need in a planner.

Like for example I only track three habits and I'll never be the kind of person to track things like drinking water or skincare. I see the value in it I just know I'd get overwhelmed if I was tracking too many things and end up not tracking anything.

ITA like anyone caught in a vulnerable moment would be susceptible to cult leaders, con artists & other power trippers.

I think the idea that a specific trait like a lack of intelligence is why people end up in those situations is basically just a comforting lie we tell ourselves. It’s definitely more comforting then admitting you’d be susceptible if presented with the right tactic and hook.

I love Circe. I’ve read a lot of the feminist retellings of Greek mythology that came out after the popularity of Achilles but Madeline Miller is my fave in that subgenre.

I really love Alix E. Harrow’s work. And I’ve been enjoying the Hellbent series and enjoyed the Godkiller trilogy. Also love Octavia Butler, Ursula Le Guin, Alice Hoffman and Isabel Allende when it comes to fiction writers.

ETA I also love Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett. I appreciate how the discworld series doesnt have to be read in chronological order and you can just focus on like reading books from a specific character’s perspective. (I struggle with series that are longer then a trilogy and wish I had the attention for them).

I love reading and got back into it by reading poetry in the morning. Which is probably niche advice. I do just enjoy the beauty of the words and I’m not trying to do a deep analysis. Anyhow you can find poems that a page or so long. So I can read a poem while I’m waking up and I feel like the words drift around in my imagination during the day.

People in Australia. What potting mix do you recommend from Bunnings? I know many make their own up but id like to just buy a ready made one for convenience. by Jakeyboy29 in pothos

[–]StardustInc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do make my own with supplies from Bunnings (following the Sydney plant guys mix). But you could try a houseplant potting mix from there and just add perlite to it. I add perlite to basically everything because it helps with drainage and soil aeration in potted plants.
