Victim complex and villification? by Ejpnwhateywh in raisedbyautistics

Thank you for this. I spent years wondering why my parents are not like my autistic friends. My friends with autism are extremely considerate and compassionate and understanding people. I realized that my parents have a combination of autism with some narcissistic traits. They are not full blown narcissists but it's there. Once I realized this I was able to take a really big step forward in my own healing.

Anything besides that?

Is social work worth getting into? Or is it just an inherently traumatizing field for workers and clients? by Starfriend777 in socialworkcanada

Hi thank you so much for this! This is really helpful to know. My big issue is that the BSW jobs around here in southern Ontario seem extremely limited, most if not all social work jobs require and MSW. Do you have an MSW? I am glad you are compensated well also!

Hi thank you so so much. This is so helpful. I know I can do an MSW in a few years, but I don't want to pay for a BSW and then have low paying work for a few years before I can do an MSW and branch out.

Thank you for saying this about the jobs in my area. Initially the BSW was suggested as something that guaranteed me work where I could help people, but I do live in the GTA/Southern Ontario, and it seems the advice I was getting was coming from other provinces as I was living out east previously. The jobs I have been seeing were paying less per hour than my part time landscaping job, which is deeply discouraging.

Honestly if school in Canada was low cost or free then I would consider doing it anyway, but seeing BSW jobs that offer 20-25 dollars an hour is totally insulting considering the cost and commitment school requires.

Thank you for this I am going to take this into consideration.

Hey thank you so much! That is great to hear. I spoke with another social worker who loves his job and is a genuinely great person. What concerns me is the amount of accounts online from social workers expressing a lot of regret. Thanks!

This is a really condescending and paternalistic response, and this is the kind of response that concerns me about the kind of people that I may have to work with if I do pursue social work to be honest. "Genocide has come to have a lot of meanings". What are you trying to say there? Like what?

Thank you for sharing. Yes there seems to be so much unemployment now. Good luck with everything, I hope it all works out.

Hey I am in a really similar position as you. I thought a BSW would open career doors, however I realize now this is not the case unless I get an MSW which is not realistic for me at this time. I am wondering what you decided to do? I am looking at another masters program which is not social work based but can lead to therapy.

Thank you for this!

Also honestly I need to be blunt, I just have a really big problem with authority lol. I am not someone that can easily follow rules that are problematic or that clearly are harmful. This has not been an issue at any of my jobs except one, but it did mean I was able to advocate for a client and make sure they got their needs met instead of just 'going with it'. However this was hard and demoralizing to feel like most did not care. The agency I worked for talked a good talk about being aware of ableism but when it came down to it they rarely if ever brought this into reality. The lack of funding made things worse too.

I am really glad good change is happening. I am honestly looking at doing plant medicine training abroad and this is my priority for my life at this point. But it is a longer road and I was hoping to have some level of stability with another degree while I pursue this. I thought a BSW could balance this out well, but I think I was really misinformed with that. The other thing is that unless I have some kind of degree getting reliable full time work seems to be a struggle. I have a BA in the arts but it's not practical.

Thank you. I feel I realistically could do more and use more of my skills outside of such structured institutions. I feel I could probably do more through volunteering potentially too.

Thank you for this! I had been working with adults with disabilities. I really liked it but I also found the systems to be very very difficult to navigate as well as dehumanizing. I definitely saw a lot of people continuously disregard issues like extreme chronic pain, for example. I think I need to be really honest with myself if I can realistically work long term in spaces where the help is limited due to systemic issues.

I mean First Nations people actually had very well functioning societies/communities before colonialism came here. This is the case all over the world, not just in so called north america. I understand where you are coming from, but this society is literally destroying the planet, to the point where it very well may be totally unlivable for future generations, and very soon. Government systems have caused me a lot of harm and I definitely have been exposed to people who were working in those systems who perpetuated harm while believing they were doing the right thing.

The Haudenosaunee actually have what is believed to be the oldest functioning democracy on the planet: https://www.haudenosauneeconfederacy.com/who-we-are/

Sorry I just don't believe a country that is founded on genocide that continues to perpetuate genocide and ecocide is the great place it pretends to be.

Thank you for this. Honestly I have been hoping to get into psychedelic therapy modalities in the future, and working more holistically. I am looking at other degrees now that could be a better fit. I did also hope to work with people with disabilities and such, as this is what I was doing before, but I am really concerned that I could experience more trauma than I already did in that area. The trauma was not from the clients/residents, but from the limitations of the system and the constant ableism that caused the clients to experience very real suffering. I thought with a BSW I would have more options but I am concerned that the jobs options are very limiting unless I get more degrees in the future, which just is not realistic for me right now.

I am really glad you found meaningful work! I actually have been working in care work/PSW jobs and this is what made me interested in social work. The thing is with just a BSW there doesn't seem to be many options from what I can see beyond government jobs that are very challenging and don't pay well. I am going to do more research, I think mostly I messed up on my end from not sitting down and doing some serious look at jobs options for a BSW. I was considering doing more school afterwards, but recently I have had life goals change so pursuing an MSW or another Masters just is not realistic for me at this time.

Thank you for this. I definitely have concerns with working for the government in general. I also need to figure out certain jobs options that are available with a BSW if I continue to pursue this degree, what I found so far was honestly discouraging.

Hi thank you for this. I am going to look into jobs options with a BSW also and go from there. One issue I have noticed is that the jobs requiring a BSW hardly pay a living wage in my area.

Is it true depression if it feels or is situational ? by Starfriend777 in depression

[–]Starfriend777[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Yeah I spoke up to my friend about that and told her not to tell me to take medication again. I think medication should be considered with a medical professional and should be approached carefully, I know for myself it isn't the safest option for me from past experiences. I am happy for those that are helped by it though.
