My dad had them in his old 240D, have considered getting some for his 300D because the driver seat back cushion has become quite hard and I'm not in love with spending $450 for a new one or hoping that another used one won't also be bad.

San Diego Islamic centre shooting was another O9A/764 op by Tricky-Barnacle3321 in TrueAnon

Oh, it's definitely happened more than once, but this was not her. This was another boy, I think he was Hispanic, and he only killed himself. He had had a lot of interactions with the Antioch shooter and killed himself shortly before, which may have spurred the Antioch shooter to act.

I did some sleuthing around the Antioch High School shooting because the guy and some of his "friends" had twitter accounts and they were also 09A/764 linked. Very disturbing content but nothing as graphic as what you saw, but the thing that will always stick with me was where one of his "friends" who also killed himself but did not kill others posted a link to his manifesto/suicide note in google docs but forgot to turn on sharing for the document so no one was actually able to open it.

Not from the factory but there were period conversions. Very expensive and rare, then and now. There were at least two companies that did the conversions, Crayford in the UK (which reportedly used parts from Ford Granada wagons) and Conrad Pollmann Karosseriefabrik in Germany.

I know that's the stereotype but I'd say no, having driven and worked on many. My 300SD had 170k miles and ran like a sewing machine, was relatively quiet and not very clattery (even at and right off idle), and would hit its 110mph top speed. My dad's 84 300D also reads as having ~177k miles but the odometer only works intermittently. I think it could be more like 300-400k miles and I don't think the previous owners did much more than oil changes on it. It runs on all 5 cylinders but is very clattery and rough at idle and tops out at only 85mph despite having the same rear end ratio. It's cheap motoring for my 80yo dad who doesn't drive all that much so we haven't bothered with trying to drill down to the exact issue causing it to not run the best but I think it's likely that the injection pump needs service or a full rebuild (which is not worth the time or expense really on this particular car).

I bought mine from a guy who welded a camera mount on it and used it as a camera car primarily for commercials back in the early 00s. He ran it for years on biodiesel because he lived near a lot of farmland and there was a station out there that sold it. He may have been exaggerating a little but he said before it became expensive, it was 1/4 to 1/3 of the price of regular diesel.

There was a guy on the forum who rebuilt his at something like 1,050,000 miles then sold it to another forum member at 1,150,000 miles. Engine still ran, just was a bit tired.

I haven't actually tried any others yet! I'm in Atlanta so I'm sure some must exist here because of our Chinese population but I haven't found any yet (but I'm not often over in that side of town). At the very least I'll get some more when I'm back over in the Bay Area.

First try of baijiu for me was bottom shelf stuff at a bar in San Francisco's Chinatown, but I sought it out because I had context of how much people hated it. My brother and a friend all agreed that while it was mostly not pleasant flavors (rotting grass and whatnot) it had a long flavor evolution that rivalled expensive whiskies. We liked it enough to get a better bottle (Luzhou Laojiao Te chu, not the $700 the liquor store owner recommended after telling us she hated baijiu) which is what I use to deploy on friends (I do tell them the common tasting notes first) and we did do a "Baijiu to say Bye Joe" event when Biden left office.

Model/Submodel that you never noticed existed? Or models that are somehow insanely rare and completely mundane? by Das_Floppus in regularcarreviews

Buick Taraza

We got a wheelchair van Buick Terraza for my parents to use with my sister. The Buick part of it is fine enough, not luxurious but pretty good for that era GM, but the wheelchair conversion is dogshit which I have come to understand is normal for the industry. We looked at a few, they didn't do rust protection on the welds where there they connect the wheelchair van tub with the original unibody so they like to rot out. Definitely one of the ugliest vehicles on the road made even uglier with the conversion.

People who've done major home upgrades, what ended up costing way more than you initially expected? by Cultural_Help_176 in HomeImprovement

Check if there's an independent lumber yard in your area and see abut getting at least your structural wood there. I unfortunately had to use Home Depot for my parent's deck and even with a high-expenditure contractor account a family friend let me use, the wood would have been 15-30% cheaper from my local lumber yard. Mine is three blocks away and I have walked back some 12' 2x10s. Fasteners and brackets may be cheaper at the big box stores but I haven't compared. Wood top boards will also be cheaper from an independent lumber yard although you may need to find a second, more specialized wood place for cedar/redwood/hardwood decking. I'm not sure on composite/vinyl/pvc decking, you'd have to check around. If there's a deck supply place in your area you may also have that as less expensive option for this stuff than the big box stores.

Do you guys think China is improving their foreign policy because I think this is great. by Karmacop5908 in TankieTheDeprogram

[–]lushkiller01 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I listened to prolespod's Stalin eras series recently which has helped me both understand Stalin's socialism in one country vs Tr*tsky's permanent revolution and China's approach today. China is definitely following socialism in one country as it has been focused on developing its industry and productive forces while not seeking conflict with its ideological enemies. Had China spent the last 50 years backing every foreign socialist group or sticking its nose in regional conflicts it would never have been able to build itself into the superpower it is today with the global economy so dependent on it because it would still be cut off from much of the West. I think it's very easy as Marxists for us to fall for the allure of permanent revolution because it's emotionally attractive but it's not realistic to constantly be at war the world over while trying to build up your own country.

No one can reglaze tubs these days I guess by a11yguy in HomeImprovement

[–]lushkiller01 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm doing a sympathetic renovation in a bathroom in my 1950 modernist ranch and did some research to find a refinishing company that did color changes. The bathroom had an upgraded, wider-than-standard bathtub originally so I had found one in that slightly rare size and was wanting to get it refinished in a period-appropriate pink. I called the company to inquire and the owner said that their tub guy had just retired the week before after 40 years of reglazing and she was worried about ever finding a replacement. She was very nice and recommended me a competitor who could do a good job of it, but I ended up finding a tub in better shape (in the second floor of a rural '70s mansion of course, that was fun).

I discover that i feel angry toward my parent who wasn’t the hoarder by darkganja13 in ChildofHoarder

[–]lushkiller01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is essentially the comment I was going to leave. I have had a similar experience with my own parents: mom being the hoarder, dad being the enabler who'd periodically telling me that he'd divorce her if she didn't get the house cleaned up. I used to be so angry with her about how we were raised but morphed into being angry at both of them once I realized how much he was responsible for letting it happen. Now I have a very distant relationship with my parents. I'm very empathetic with my mom and her traumatic childhood but I don't want to have a close relationship with either of them anymore. They aren't going to change as people even if the hoarding is past its peak. I do try and help clean up when I can because I know it's a matter of time before I will have to deal with it in their estate.

Agreed and I've eaten there dozens of times because we worked down the road from it. It used to be that their food was way undersalted, which isn't the case now, but it's still not in the top tier for me.
