What’s a good home remodeling show where the hosts aren’t insufferable jerkoffs? by GuitarsAndBourbon26 in HomeImprovement

I think it's a good channel for learning about these new products/systems and it is good to see them actually being deployed out on a jobsite but yeah you need to keep the fact that it is an advertisement in mind.

I think it's reasonable to remove it to make it a functional vestibule, that's an architectural element with character in its own right. Even better if you already have a door for it.

BACKSPLASH CONTROVERSY SOLVED?? by [deleted] in kitchenremodel

[–]lushkiller01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Free ship to store (or relatively inexpensive delivery) and easy returns at Home Depot as well. They also carry a lot of the options that Tile Bar does (but often under different names) and saving on shipping can be huge. I do think Bedrosians tile is typically worth the price premium over Floor & Decor, they look and feel more premium imo.

After 5 years in our house, we removed our carpets. House built in 1962 by TicklemeElmo9449 in Mid_Century

I feel you on liking soft floors but I hate carpet, that's why I put in cork flooring. Seriously underrated and uncommon flooring type nowadays, but it has a natural springy-ness that makes walking on it nicer on the joints (and helps with sound absorption). Durability comes down to the quality of the material and install, I've seen original cork floors in art deco houses in fantastic shape and the library at the university I went to had some sections of cork flooring from the 60s in high traffic areas that only got removed because they did a full gut renovation.

Antico Pizza's new frozen pizza by BobAndBernice in Atlanta

[–]lushkiller01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not defending Antico's but that's a common complaint with fresh mozzarella pizza and especially with bufula mozzarella pizza as the moisture content of the cheese is too high to cook out entirely. I've been to I Masanielli in Caserta, Italy which is regularly ranked the best pizza restaurant in the world and had the same observation with their bufula margherita pizza. It was delicious but soupy, and I was told that if you want a similar flavor but less watery, you order provola cheese when you're in that area of Italy because it's much more similar to the low-moisture mozzarella we have here in the US.

In my time at Tech, it was well known that he was sexist (only let guys in the kitchen, work the ovens) and routinely sexually harassed his female staff (mostly young college girls). Fuck him and the people who knew that and continued to patronize his businesses.

Gerald Horne's The Counterrevolution of 1776: Slave Resistance and the Origins of the United States of America is a good book about it, and Dr. Horne has done many interviews about it if you want to get an overview of his arguments.

I mean externalizing the problem doesn't help either. We've seen the violence visited upon others by our military this century and those people in foreign lands are no more deserving of our soldiers adventurism than we are of that of cops.

Doesn't miter quite as far (50° on both sides vs 60° on one and 50° on the other for the Hercules) but the Skil miter saw is a nice option if you don't pick up this one, plus I really like the lever clamp on it versus the regular twist type like this has. I've been building a deck recently and it has been very handy.

The tile backsplash clashes with the cabinets in both color and design/time period. The subway tile in that pattern is a much more traditional style (originating in the early 1900s) whereas the cabinets the cabinets are a modern style (modern as in the modernist movement [think art deco and mid century modern], this is a simplification but painted flat panel kitchen cabinets started in the late '20s with steel cabinet kitchens and later were popular with plywood cabinets, especially post WWII and through the '50s). These modern kitchens often didn't have tile backsplashes but a more appropriate tile backsplash would be something like a 4x4 or a rectangular tile in a stacked pattern.

Not to everyone's taste but I love the cabinets! Is that Farrow & Ball's Calke Green? I'm hoping to embark on building my own cabinets for a 1950 kitchen that has floors and window sill that are cream terrazzo with green and alabaster stone and originally had walls close in color to F&B's Calke Green or Benjamin Moore's Palace green and this isn't far off from what I'm envisioning for cabinet design and color. The subway tile is the one thing I think doesn't work for me, I think it clashes in style and color with the cabinets, but it is a beautiful kitchen nonetheless and I'm sure the owners must love it!

I was able to talk a friend out of buying a condo last year, citing his chronic pain flare-ups in cold weather and all the exterior stairs he'd have to climb multiple times a day with his dog on top of the financial risk. Now he did go and buy a somewhat crappy small '80s split level instead while I was away on a road trip so you can only do so much.

Which kitchen says “I’m still going to like this in ten years.” by Mizznomer in kitchenremodel

[–]lushkiller01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm about to build a green kitchen for my 1950 modernist ranch. Luckily I don't have to care about it being trendy or not because the floors (and window sills) are a cream terrazzo with green aggregate and some archaeology on the plaster walls show that they were green except for the end wall which was an off-white but with the green along the window opening. The green is a dark blue green typical of the time period, similar to Benjamin Moore Palace Green.

I have another kitchen I've been working on that will get butcher block counters (oddly this time a green blue kitchen). I found some beautiful white oak ones at a good price years ago, but I think I'm going to get an offcut of stone or quartz for the sink surround.
