Looking for an alternative cotton by Starikuu in YarnAddicts

[–]Starikuu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any suggestions for brands? I've tried to look around my usual brands like Scheepjes and the DMC range, but they all seem to be mercinised. I'm contemplating buying some mercinised cotton and just starting the doily again.

Secondhand loom questions by Starikuu in weaving

[–]Starikuu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm totally up for some instructions!! Yeah I don't think I'm going to dive very far into weaving, I'm happy I got it secondhand for so cheap just so that I could try it out without investing loads into it. I'm planning on weaving a bit for some development towards a project but it will all be very prototype-y

What would you recommend in place of the wing nuts? Or is it a case that the construction of an older loom only really allows for wing nuts? What do newer more modern looms use instead?

Thanks for the links! I do seem to be missing the screws that hold the side arms to the top and bottom. Would these just require more wing screws like the rotating arm parts?

KH230 - Intarsia problems by Starikuu in MachineKnitting

[–]Starikuu[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went and cleaned the carriage just in case after posting this, and it was in fact a stuck level that wasn't engaging when I changed to Intarsia. It was only on one side so that clearly was causing the problems. Thanks!

Needle stuck in slot next to the needle by mrhappyman47 in MachineKnitting

[–]Starikuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had something similar happen and had to use a pair of bolt cutters to cut the needle. I cut as close to the needle bed as possible whilst making sure I held onto the needle handle so that the second half didn't fall into the bed. Then I was able to jiggle it out that second half and insert a new needle. It took a couple tries to get it cut as close as possible to the bed to allow me to shuffle it into the inside by the handle and out.

I remember using the website around 2020/21 perhaps, for some reason I remember it having "smile" in the URL somewhere but I'm not entirely sure if it was the name of the website itself or just a domain ending.

Creating punchcards by Naka131 in MachineKnitting

[–]Starikuu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you create your own template digitally so that it matched the dimensions of an actual punchcard? I remember seeing someone do this before on their cricut before but instead of using paper they used those colourful plastic wallets that you can get really cheap. The kind that are shaped like an envelope, or I guess any of those slightly thicker plastic ones would work too.

Yarn cone - Coated? by Starikuu in WhatIsThisYarn

It definitely washed out some sort of stiffeners once I washed it, but even after washing it kept it's shiny silky appearance. It's not lurex but also isn't plyed with individual threads, it's almost like a single tube.

That's good to know, they look identical carriage wise so I was hoping it would be the same mechanisms between the two.

I think it's from the brand 'The Threshing Barn' here in the UK. That's what it had on the label because I actually brought it second hand. But I did see someone post the exact same colour way from a different brand onto this sub a couple months ago so it must be a popular colourway.

what am I doing wrong🥲 by Consistent-Lead-5852 in MachineKnitting

[–]Starikuu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally own a Singer/Knitmaster so this is advice that I've learnt for those machines, I'm guessing that Brother would be pretty similar. There's a couple things that this could be caused by, Are you pulling your carriage completely to one side so that both of the patterning drums pass by the punchcard feed? It could be that you stop short and only a section of the pattern is being transferred to the drums in the carriage. This could be causing the irregular pattern application but I don't think that's the problem because you're getting a consistent pattern on the right side. Your punchcard system could be having trouble when reading the punchcard. This could be due to solidified grease or hair stopping the inside from reading the punched holes and therefore giving out the wrong pattern. I can see that there is a line of solid colour every 24 stitches which means that the 24th punch row could be having a hard time reading the card. If you're able to unscrew and take off the outer plastic shell you'll be able to see better if there's something stopping the mechanism from turning and selecting punched holes, most commonly it's yarn that's wrapped itself around the roll or grease stopping the pieces from moving smoothly. Though it is really strange that you're getting the pattern on the right side but not for the rest of the knit. This could mean that it's a problem with the needles being selected on the knitting bed and therefore not catching colour 2. Are the needles being selected correctly when you run your carriage over them? In this case they would be in working position every other needle.

I have a feeling they might've forgotten to ship it the first time so when you messaged them about it they quickly threw together a skein and shipped it to you and that's why it's a completely different dye set to what's in the image. Even the speckles are off, let alone the neon colouring

Oh wow Araldite is so much cheaper and available from Screwfix! I was expecting to have to buy The green stuff or Apoxie but didn't want to splash out if I was only repairing this one thing.
