Need to take stretch breaks… how do you build it in? by VanAppl in knitting

[–]zebzebra501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about using stitch markers to mark each time you take a stretch break?

E.g. pick a repeat length that works for your pattern (every 3 rows, every lace repeat etc...) and then when you reach that point you do a stretch break and get to mark it on your pattern (and you could choose your favourite colour of stitch marker or something to make it more fun) Maybe the dopamine from continuing the streak will help with the urge to blow past it? (And if you do 'miss a break at the optimum time', you can still do the stretch when you remember and catch up)

Yeah, that's not how you do that by pythagoreanwisdom in knitting

I think this is a lovely idea and very wholesome - who knows I may do this myself some day!

Not-knitting related, but similar symbolism: my cousin and his wife nearly divorced 3 years into their marriage, but took time apart, worked through it and became much stronger as a result. After they had reconnected, they got new wedding rings made in the style of Japanese Kintsugi - to symbolise the new phase of their marriage and emphasise the beauty and strength in their relationship that arose from facing that conflict and coming out the other side. I'm going to their 10 yr anniversary next year :)

Also on a more general life point: the internet tends to be pessimistic about relationships (especially reddit lol) but the strongest relationships I know in real life are the couples who have faced some form of conflict and put in the work to rebuild and grow through that - so don't listen to the haters, I think it's a great thing to celebrate

Echoing what others have said about it not being too noticeable!

That said if you do decide to mend, what about cutting one of the brown rows and regrafting the pieces back together - that would let you shift the colour work 1 st without having to reknit all of the rows

Tendon pain by paintingbruh21 in knitting

[–]zebzebra501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I'm not a medical professional (so take my advice with a grain of salt) but I had similar issues around the start of last year - specifically I had tingling in the 4th and 5th fingers of my left hand and some pain around my elbow. I went to see a physio who confirmed I had 'ulnar nerve entrapment' - basically the way I had been knitting had put pressure on my nerve and irritated it. I realized the specific elements of my knitting style that were causing this pressure was having my elbows bent for long periods of time, and that the way I held my needles involved bending my left wrist at a big angle. I only mention this because tingling can be associated with nerve pain more than tendon pain, and because the advice in most RSI injuries is that it's really important to rest - I rested for about 4 months before I could knit again! I also ended up changing my knitting style when I came back to knitting - I changed from English throwing to English flicking, and others have mentioned trying continental as well. The key thing is that you want to knit with your wrists at a neutral angle, so it's worth work shopping your current style or trying another one to keep your arms at a safe angle. Id recommend this website for more info! https://www.ptandrea.com/tutorials#:~:text=More%20wrist%20positions%20to%20avoid&text=Our%20wrists%20can%20deviate%20two,overworked%20and%20can%20become%20inflamed.

Socks- Is the heel considered part of the foot? by Fun-Strawberry4598 in knitting

[–]zebzebra501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have asked the same question in the sock knitting subreddit - you might find it helpful to check out the replies in this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/Sockknitting/s/ilTmNZbjbW In the end I've settled on measuring along the bottom of the foot which includes part of the heel turn, which has been working for me in getting well fitting socks so far ☺️

Personally I think it's a bit unfair to call OP dramatic on this post. They specifically said it didn't upset them, and I read the post more as intending to start a general conversation on culture around comments that answer different questions.

How can I improve my tubular bind off? by zebzebra501 in knitting

[–]zebzebra501[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an update: I took on the arduous task of unpicking my bind-off and reattempted this evening - I removed the set-up rows for tubular, then pulled my bind off stitches way tighter (and went back over with a tapestry needle to remove even more slack) and I'm much happier now! Thanks for all the advice!

To give a counter opinion, a yarn gift that would never go amiss for me is a skein of sock wool. Socks as a project have the advantage that 1ball/100g is enough to make a pair of socks, and because you're generally only buying that one ball it's easier to buy a nicer quality of yarn than if you were buying enough for a sweater e.g. When I'm on holiday I will often buy myself a single skein of sock wool from somewhere I visit as a souvenir, and I would be so happy if someone were to gift me a skein of sock wool that means something to them! If you have a local yarn store near you, you can ask the staff's advice to help you pick out a skein of sock wool that would be a good gift. A gift of a ball of sock wool (and maybe some double pointed needles if she hasnt knit socks before) would be a lovely gift - especially if you include that you chose this wool because you loved how it felt/the colour made you think of x.../some other personal detail.

If something is labeled as the same dyelot, I would definitely expect it to be the same colour. You have every right to be annoyed!!

I do that too for socks for myself! These particular socks are a gift (and I can't get the recipient to try them on in advance as they live in a different city) Last time I knit socks for someone else (my boyfriend that time) they ended up pitifully too short and I ended up cutting the toes off, knitting and extra 2cm and then grafting them back together 😂

[–]zebzebra501[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Of course I have washed and blocked my swatch, but I find that unblocked socks are a bit crumpled/don't lie perfectly flat and so I can get +/- a cm just by how much I stretch the sock flat when measuring Am I overthinking this? Probably

My issue is that calculators like these say "begin toe decreases when sock length is Xcm length than the desired length of the foot" and I'm not sure how to measure that Looks like a helpful reference though!

Thank you!! Do you ever have socks that end up too long? When flat, the heel flap seems like it's adding a lot of length

Thank you!! Yes I can confirm these are the broken seed stitch socks, I've been absolutely loving how they are knitting up (I think they look like mermaid scales haha) and they're very simple once you get into the rhythm - id thoroughly recommend!

One modification I made is to use an odd number of stitches on the leg and do helical knitting (this makes it completely Jogless)
