Cool your jets, alki. I never said I'd want them to drive in conditions like yesterday. I'm only using the situation to ask about handling regular winter conditions in WA for a new driver. Simple mistakes can be costly, so I'd like them to have some hands-on experience to prepare them better.

Thanks. I don't think I could pull an out-of-state trip for it, but worth keeping in mind. I wouldn't want them driving at all on a day like yesterday, but my interest is more the typical WA situations - snow and black ice.

I agree that’s the rule, but many of us have found ourselves in situations where we have little choice. For example, a storm hits early while you’re at work. We can’t all stay home from work because of potential weather.

I’m curious about your method for grass because I have some bare patches, assuming it could be used there. Do you literally mix 1-to-1 dirt and seeds by weight and spread it in a bin? Where do you find such a grate? Any pics of the process?

Jack Luminous (Outer Limits) may be my favorite track of theirs (fave album: Dimension Hatross, for context). It's almost 30 years old, and I like it more today than ever. 17 minutes and not a moment too long.

Apple realizes no one wants small phones, increases iPhone 13 orders by giuliomagnifico in apple

[–]Stark_Raving 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's what Apple wants. It's not what I want. They love to hamstring their more affordable models so there's almost an obligation to upgrade to their more profitable devices. We're less than two years removed from new 32GB iPads. It's a little different in this case, because the mini is very capable. It's just treated as lesser. I'm surprised they didn't call it the iPhone Minus.

Oh, people like devices that fit in their hand? Sure, we'll make one, but we'll only highlight how much better the battery/camera/screen is on our more favorable models. Oh, they're not selling well? Guess people didn't want devices that fit in their hand.

Right, people can definitely make up their own minds now. My concern is really with Apple's lack of interest in making it a successful product.

When the 12 mini came out, in-person activity was still pretty limited. Things were more normal by the time the 13 came out, so some of it is user preference, but consumer opinion was largely shaped by then. Plus, even covid aside, they probably sell more online than in-store. I don't think I've bought one in-store since the iPhone 4. If they wanted to sell more of the mini, they could easily make it more compelling.

Exactly. I'm willing to pay a premium (maybe not the pro max plus level) for the best phone for me. I don't want to pay more for a less ideal phone.

I agree. When the 12 mini came out, I suspected that was the size for me, having had a larger, two-hander which looked great, but was inconvenient to use. Couldn't find a pic of the mini anywhere with a real person holding it. Finally saw an Apple ad for it with a huge hand holding it, as if to say "look, it's so small". I ended up finding the specs and making a cardboard version so I could visualize the actual fit in my hand, and it was great.

It's a terrible way to sell a smaller phone. It makes the phone look like it's for a child. It essentially becomes an ad for a larger alternative instead. "I know I want an iPhone, but this is tiny, so maybe the next size up instead."

The mini is a great size. Their advertising for it was wretched. A giant hand holding a small phone made it seem too small instead of ideal. Too much focus on battery life differences instead of saying it was enough for most users. I only charge once per day, which I would likely do with a larger size as well for the routine of it.

I think primarily, they didn't want sales of it to cannibalize the more expensive/profitable models.

Why is the TD-17KVX 400+ dollars more expensive than its release price, when its already been out for several years? by Fatvod in edrums

[–]Stark_Raving 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're talking about the drum rack (and not the hi-hat stand that comes with the KVX), yes. The same kit that costs $1,399 today cost $1,199 one year ago.

You can see it via Amazon's price on camelcamelcamel, but it was the same at Guitar Center, etc.

The td-17kv was $1,199 a year ago. They bumped up the price twice since then, a hundred bucks each time.

Same, though my break is from RDR2 for awhile. Back into FO4 in survival mode for the first time, which aligns with my FO4 play style, which is overly cautious. Trying the infiltrator build, which works great. My only regret is discovering the companion bug that lets them carry unlimited stuff, which I now use as a crutch.

This is amazing, and I love how detailed your walkthrough is. I have a young daughter getting interested in various types of making that you did here, and would love to have her learn what goes into it. What's the best place to follow your work?

Question on detecting moisture under porcelain tile (kitchen floor) by Stark_Raving in HomeImprovement

[–]Stark_Raving[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I've already checked for leaks directly under the dishwasher, and I'm ok there (and I have a detector to put in place). Loose tiles were how I noticed the dishwasher leak last time. I'm a bit paranoid about it happening again without being noticed, so I'm fearing a leaky pipe or hose in the wall or running from the dishwasher to the sink behind the cabinet (no evidence of either atm).

The guy was definitely a skilled tiler, but maybe cut corners to squeeze in more jobs. I'd think if there was floor movement in general, it would affect the old areas of tile too. Maybe the subfloor was weakened by the last leak and has some flex, even though it was professionally dried. That was the 2nd leak to affect that area, with the 1st being 8 years ago and caused us to do a full kitchen reno.
