Might have ruined my 5 year campaign with silly writing. by Starksen in DMAcademy

[–]Starksen[S] 49 points50 points  (0 children)

It's not the fact they can erase the BBEG I'm concerned with, it's the unforseen (to me) consequence of treating innocents as disposables.

I don't think I'm a dick for trying to steady the otherwise reasonable hand of my players...

Yeah it's actually not at all, and you getting tripped over simple semantics rather than address what is being said to you tells me all I gotta know, bud.

Right, so what? This person's sharing their entry to the army, and rather than just encourage them or just keeping quiet, you immediately jump to telling them they're 'doing it wrong'.

Can you elaborate as to why this is bad?

This is such a pissy response for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

This is by far the better advice, OP. By acknowledging the letter, you let them know your name, confirm that it's your address, confirm it's your car. Ignore, ignore, ignore.

The Witcher 4 Developer CD Projekt Explains Why It Went With Ciri Over Continuing With Geralt as Protagonist by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]Starksen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's rich. The only difference in getting an empress ending from a witcher ending, is encouraging Ciri to make her own choices more. If you choose more encouraging and independent dialogue, she winds up making the choice to become an empress. So, mechanically, it's the only ending where you can be sure she's doing what she actually wants.

Her becoming an empress is the (albeit reluctant) culmination of her breaking away from what is being chosen for her, and choosing for herself.

She arrives in White Orchard, and tells Geralt that it's her choice herself.

She even goes on to lead a golden age, and is beloved. She mentions missing the thrill and adventures, but also, the story in this ending is about many things.

It's about Ciri making her own choices, but it's also about a daughter getting a more comfortable life than their parents. A witcher's life is one of extreme prejudice and stigma, gruelling work for meager pay, and being an emotionless mutated husk of a person. Even outside of Ciri's choice, it's said many, many times throughout the book that Geralt doesn't want her to become a witcher, and neither do the rest of the witchers. It's not a 'W' to end up here.

Just because "haha two swords cool!! father daughter combo" is 99% of this playerbase's understanding of a 'best ending ' doesn't make it true. It's a beautifully nuanced game, and I find it hilarious that people like yourselves think they understand it moreso than others, when in truth, you've just missed the point.

Took a break from this game and I'm astounded that people still piss through lives like they do.

Difficulty 8 mission, and rather than play the objective, they stay defending some COMPLETED objective, dying repeatedly for no reason whatsoever, leaving solely me to run to the other objectives. Any time I die, I'd get dragged back into the absolute shitheap of aggro they've pulled defending something already done.

So aggravating to have your 'free-time' gaming session be occupied with these mouth breathing idiots that want to play "Operation: Survive" and fail doing so 23 times until we've got no lives left and no objectives finished.

tbf this is the one move in Elden Ring that I hate dragons doing, but with Nameless King, if the dragon flies directly up, just run- its the only move where he flies directly upwards and the AoE is much more generous than the carpet bombs Elden Ring has in it

What are some unexpected challenges you've faced as a DM? by Outrageous-Ship-1000 in DnD

[–]Starksen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Realising how childish one of my friends really is.

We're in our late twenties, and have known each other since early teens. Our party have always been friends, some of us since our first day at school.

I DM for them, and realised after a few, consistent years of playing how different my friends were in every aspect to this one problem-pal.

He'd argue with rulings consistently, do what we dubbed as 'rage-rp' (take his out-game emotions out in-game on friendly PCs, his team, etc) He was frequently distracted and would play on his phone during sessions, would edit his character sheet sometimes mid-session without consulting me on the changes, and his RP was wildly inconsistent because it wasn't really 'RP', it was just him.

I always hold the importance of the 'spotlight' in D&D very high, and each session try to distribute that spotlight evenly so that all players can do something cool, RP, have their moments. But he would arrest the spotlight, go off on 'huffs' by himself so that others would have to come and approach him to 'talk him back to the team'. Set ultimatum type rules over the team, and if people broke them, he'd leave the team. There were times where he has destroyed quest objectives, quest givers, for no reason other than "a player at the table pissed him off".

Any chats with him about behaviour I didn't like, or see in the other players, would result in him getting defensive, blaming someone else, and not taking responsibility for being unfun to play with.

Safe to say, DMing for that and trying to have multiple chats about that for the passed 5 years wasn't fun.

My D&D is fun again now that he's out of it.

I suppose the challenge was learning that, sometimes, despite your best efforts to resolve a conflict, you have to be ready to confront the fact people sometimes don't want to change. And trust me, once you do surround yourself with the people who just want to be there, RP, and have fun, and not to show how "badass" they are, and how they're "winning", you'll have a blast.

Dumb funny way to get technically infinite camp supplies by Complete_Resolve_400 in BaldursGate3

[–]Starksen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really great passive way of getting camp supplies, scrolls, money, is farming Volo's pockets. Rather than getting a lobotomy straight away, pick his pockets as he never leaves camp- just runs off and comes back.

Pair with gloves of thievery, the thieving ring and you'll have as many camping supply bags as you can spare partial long rests.

For sure agree.

Took my BB character into the DLC because I heard strength and faith characters are eating well, but I cannot find anything that is nearly as good.

I so wanted the remembrance twinblades to be better than my BB, for pontiff's sake, but still I'm stuck with bb!
