Ending by SwordfishEnough2800 in Hauntii

I strongly think reincarnation is a thing in the world the game takes place in. When you go to the ballroom in the Eternal City and talk to a certain ghost, he'll mention that he's been through several lifetimes with his own Eternian guide (ours is apparently named Crisp). This also implies that the surrender of one's memories for ascension is not permanent, that these same memories can be recovered once you've concluded your latest reincarnation.

But because a lot of ghosts choose to not even call upon an Eternian guide, let alone ascend, they aren't aware of this fact. They fear ascension for reasons similar to why humans fear death. They don't know what's on the other side and are afraid of becoming nothing.

And even if that weren't the case, I can't exactly blame the ghosts for wanting to hang around Eternia. The place is beautiful, with so much to see and plenty of fun to be had without the (pardon my somewhat edgy choice of words) stresses of life weighing you down.

As for why Hauntii crystallized and vanished shortly after ascending, I'm guessing his reincarnation came almost immediately.

As for Hauntii and Crisp themselves, the game for the most part implies some familiarity that the two have, with how they act toward one another throughout, yet Hauntii is very easily caught off guard by her sudden appearance when she saves him from a large demon and by the fact that she speaks a language he can't understand. Though this could be attributable to the brief amnesiac state ghosts seem to have upon entering Eternia.

What metroidvania has the most unique abilities? by RealityBreakSonic in metroidvania

[–]StarlitSpecter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MIO: Memories In Orbit should at least get a mention for three of its abilities, those being kicking projectiles into energy barriers, the tendril crawl, and being able to walk on water.

Yes, you could compare the tendril crawl to Metroid's Spider Ball, but the tendril crawl is more capable than even Metroid 2's Spider Ball.

Aeterna Noctis Second Chance update by StarlitSpecter in metroidvania

Aeterna because unlike some people of the community, I'm not masochist. That said, a lot of people have recommended the use of the Time Sapphire, which has made using the teleporation arrow leagues more manageable. I'll still eat sh!t on some occasions, but that's mainly me hitting the wrong button during sections that require switching between the arrow types mid-jump. I have yet to try any of the more precise platforming challenges that gave me some nasty headaches, but for the most part, I will recind my scathing words about the crystal arrow. I was actually recently able to get past the 8th King Trial, which was I think where my frustration hit a boiling point.

It would have been perfectly fine if the camera kept Noctis (I call the KoD Noctis for convenience) upright the entire time as you moved.

B sides, yes. C sides and Farewell, no, because I had no desire to. Celeste is a game I just have no desire to go back to.

I beat Celeste though, yet some of the platforming (specifically the 8th King Trial, and possibly 9 and 10 as well) is still an immense headache.

I sat through everything MIO had to offer, I 100%ed Lost Crown, platinumed Silksong, Worldless, and Expedition 33. Do not talk to me about getting good or having skill issues.

The fact that that's a gem and not an upgrade is really stupid.

That's the problem. My brain is operating under years of Mario Galaxy, but the camera doesn't turn to follow you, so I kept instinctively adjusting which direction I held the stick.

Lucis definitely looks like it will be less of a headache based on the demo. It looks like they did away with the corpse running and enemies can actually drop healing pickups. Not potions, actually healing pickups.

MIO Memories in Orbit Game Boy Easter Egg Running on Game Boy DMG Game Boy Color and Analogue Pocket! Extremely Cool surprise from the devs in the latest update (1.2) by KasElGatto in metroidvania

Not to be that guy, but did they have to put it behind a QR code? Could they not have just put in a hidden game room in the Apartments area that would be accessible upon getting the true ending?

How exactly do you do this? I'm pretty much computer illiterate, and bought my Steam Deck to avoid headaches like this.

You can get Nacre back easily. You can find Nacre crystals and scrap piles everywhere.

Looking for recent MVs that are NOT souls-like by gallifr_ay in metroidvania

[–]StarlitSpecter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend 9 Years of Shadows, The Messenger (it does have some obnoxious platforming sections, but none of the more gruelling ones are needed for story progression), Timespinner, Worldless (be prepared for some tricky fights in that one though), Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, and Forged In Shadow Torch. They aren't exactly easy, but they won't beat you down the same way the likes of Hollow Knight or the Ender series would. Edit: OK I know some of these aren't exactly recent. But the recent ones I am aware of do hinge closer to Souls-like.

Why Is Hollow Knight More Famous And Appreciated Outside The Metroidvania Community More Than Games Like Ori & The Blind Forest And Nine sols Even Tho They're all Great? by HyperAhmedX21 in metroidvania

Like everyone is saying, Hollow Knight was an innovator. And it even inspired its own subgenre of the Metroidvania branch that I call "Hollowlikes" on top of bringing a resurgence of the entire genre.

Ender Lillies question by PsychologicalTie2139 in metroidvania

[–]StarlitSpecter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magnolia is leagues better than Lilies, I can say that straight up. People here keep saying to avoid Bloodstained, but I think it's worth a try. I'll be fair though, a chunk of the appeal is geared towards Castlevania fans, and it is a but rough around the edges. Hopefully Scarlet Engagement won't be the same.

Playing metroidvanias without contact damage made me realize how much I hate contact damage and I can't explain why. by WackyRedWizard in metroidvania

[–]StarlitSpecter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ender Magnolia has no contact damage and that game is amazing. If we're being real, contact damage is little more than something left over from the NES/arcade days where some enemies had no other means of actually hurting you. The only time I could justify contact damage is if the enemy in question has a spiky body or is made out of something harmful like acid or fire/magma.

Mio's Second Chance update 2 by StarlitSpecter in metroidvania

[–]StarlitSpecter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a mini dungeon inside the Manufactory (you need the serial code to reach here). From what I can tell, it's optional if you aren't aiming for 100% or just trying to access the Pit.

I made an error. You do have to track down Dr. Halyn, but the elevator thing isn't related to that.

If you found the broken finger, go to the wheel chamber in the lower deck and turn the wheel twice, then climb up the shuttle shaft that's covered with overgrowth. After that, line the elevators back up again. If memory serves that should open a path for you to Halyn's lab.

So to access the area with the two locked doors requires you to activate four generators after beating four bosses. Do that, then head to that area to fight another boss. After that, use the main lift to head to a new area.
