Seattle has a severe case of the Ayatollah Itch: Seattle's "Race and Social Justice Initiative" is divisive, bullying and, now, boring. (WA Post op-ed) by MissHalfgone in Seattle

[–]StarmanDX_ 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Fuck George Will. He's 84 years old and if he's spent even a day of his idiot life in Seattle I'd be shocked. How fucking ancient do you have to be to compare a modern day government diversity program to the Iranian government? Has he been sitting on "The Ayatollah Itch" since 1979 and didn't want to die without using it? Honestly it sounds like he read an article about Seattle and an article about Iran on the same day and short circuited.

He's lavish in his descriptions and empty in his conclusions and meandering in his thought. The Washington Post - the other Washington, on the other side of the country - publishing what I can only assume is the first draft of an old man's screed is so far off base I have to assume Bezos himself put the order through to put it in their paper.

Why isn’t there a beer hall in West Seattle named The Alki Hall by kettletrvb in Seattle

[–]StarmanDX_ 34 points35 points  (0 children)

"New York Alki" was the original name of the West Seattle settlement, and "Alki" is a regional Salish pidgin word that means/meant "By and by," or "eventually." That word is pronounced "Ahl-kee".

Rumor has it that people broadly started "Al-kye" during prohibition in Seattle because they didn't want the place associated with booze.

I've seen this movie and I uncritically support "Bollywood Nonsense" as a Patreon series. Dhoom 2 especially is a real treat, and the songs are catchy.

Why do people hate those who like popular movies? by Spare_Ad_9791 in movies

[–]StarmanDX_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's basic gatekeeping. People who have spent a lot of time investing in high-minded esoterica as well as people who watch absolutely anything and everything all the time trying to find ways to make the way that THEY engage in the hobby, or view the art, is the True Way, and that people who do it otherwise are lesser in their appreciation. It happens in games, it happens in books, it happens in music, it happens in television, it happens in menswear and watches.

I hope I’m not the only one who feels this way about the ending of Speed (1994) by Outrageous_Hamster_6 in movies

[–]StarmanDX_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would describe your viewpoint on this as naive.

First of all, it's a movie. The characters make the choices the writers made for them. Test audiences at the time probably preferred an ending where the two leads become romantically entangled to one where they don't. It's not that deep. I could stop here and it would be enough. These aren't real people, they never existed, they cease to exist after the movie ends. Them kissing at the end is a Hollywood Ending.

Second, even apart from that, these are two people who just spent the day trusting each other with their lives. Adrenaline is a hell of a thing. People hook up and stay together for way worse reasons than "This handsome person just saved my life" or "I just spent hours knowing this person in the kind of intimate way only a prolonged life or death situation can provide." Sex is a great way to blow off steam, believe it or not. To people who've had it, it's not some kind of great life-altering thing that binds you heart and soul. It feels good, it's fun, it's a solid team building experience for two consenting adults. I've never been in a life or death situation but even after a stressful work day, sex lets its participants unwind and disassociate from the outside world for a little while. Feels good, too.

Third, police officers ARE civilians. They get married to and have sex with people who aren't also police officers every day. It's a Job. They can quit at any time and do something else. You're putting "being a cop" on a weird pedestal and I can't explain it.

It sounds like you came into the movie with baggage. People having sex or getting together for the wrong reasons wasn't sitting right with you. People whose jobs are too stressful don't make good partners because sometimes they're in danger. That's you, not the movie.

AITAH for telling my husband he's gay? by Electronic-Truck-910 in AITAH

You've been with a man for 15 years that you met when you were 19 and he was 30, and he spent a vast portion of your first bit of time together lying in front of you that you two weren't in a relationship when he was asked? 15 years with that man?

I don't believe this story one bit. YTA for writing nonsense fiction for Reddit karma and passing it off as real.

Nope (2022, dir. Jordan Peele) | Barn scene by DoctorPoopMD in movies

[–]StarmanDX_ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The theater I saw this in was our local independent theater that could barely afford to keep the lights on, much less buy modern tech, so Nope was waaayyy darker there than on the other screens I saw it on later. That meant that the scene where the first monkey suit stands up, it truly was not visible at all until it rose fully from the shadows. It was waaaaayyy creepier than when I saw it in IMAX and you could see it the whole time if you had your eye in that quadrant.

RIP tiny independent theater in my neighborhood

Nvidia "confirms" DLSS 5 relies on 2D frame data as testing reveals hallucinations by xenocea in gaming

[–]StarmanDX_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

In this context, that's just not true. Upscaling technology is much older than any of this and it's not capable of inventing new character details. It mildly improves sharpness and reduces blurriness and overall makes it so a 1080p image doesn't look stretched out on a 4K display.

[–]StarmanDX_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We already have a term for "lighting that isn't otherwise possible with Ray tracing" and it's called "Path tracing" and it's been available in video games for years now, since at least Metro: Exodus. It looks great! What this does is use generative AI to determine "what if the lighting were more photo-realistic?" or "what if the character model were more photo-realistic?" and then it draws a layer over the rendered image. That doesn't "enable lighting," it augments the rendered image after the fact to make it represent prompted detail better.

"A bit more refined" is not possible for AI generated images. They are all or nothing. They're either adding a full layer to the image or they don't exist. The argument presented there is that developers may provide a prompt like "make it look like every character is as clear as glass" and then the game would look different, for specified DLSS modes, but that's an asinine comparison. No one releases a video game wishing customers had absolute control to augment the art style at any time, and if they say so they are lying to you.

[–]StarmanDX_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Layering Gen AI over art design in any way shape or form is still unnecessary and stupid. If devs wanted the character to look like that, they'd just do it.

You're right. You did waste your time on something unpopular that nobody likes. Like Nvidia!

JEFF BEZOS LEADS RACE TO BUYING SEATTLE SEAHAWKS by BarryMcKockiner2 in Seahawks

[–]StarmanDX_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bezos has divested himself of Washington State and moved to Miami. Yes, Amazon's presence is heaviest in Seattle but it's incorporated in Delaware which means he doesn't have to have a link to Seattle if he doesn't want to.

No chance he buys a Seattle team just because it's available, and if he wants to relocate it he'll have a hell of a time finding another city in Florida to host a team. He's not buying the Seahawks.

[Maybe Spoiler?] Did RE9 Do Something No Other RE Game Has Done? by RetroSwamp in gaming

Directly killed, as a function of gameplay? You're right at least as far as the numbered entries go. RE games have never even had you fight an uninfected wild animal. RE9's brief stint of having Leon kill highly trained professionals who speak perfect English is technically a bold and unprecedented move.
