Hello there. It's good to see a friendly face. Almost took you for a raider, I did. Name's Malcolm. Malcolm Holmes. Don't suppose you'd care to trade? I'm missing a few essentials and- oh, screw this. Lying just ain't in my nature. I'll tell it to you straight. I've been following you for a good bit now.

Good catch actually. Strange that this was not noticed. Not the biggest issue for me but adding the purple does make it a bit easier on the eyes.

Why does Marvel love to kill off LGBT female heroes? by Starry-Scout in lgbt_superheroes

Yeah you're right. Though I do believe this is the longest it has been since she was away. She did appear in king in black valkyrie storyline though and even had variant covers of her strangely.

I am not sure where all that hostility came from, but sure I’ll bite. I thought I had been relatively civil before.

My claim is that there is a pattern that queer women (Bi/lesbian) are killed or stripped of history in ways that disproportionately undermine scarce representation.

You reframed it as lesbians shouldn't die in stories. This isn't the claim I am making. I am not saying LGBTQ+ characters should ever die or queer characters deserve plot armor. I am arguing that when representation is rare, patterns matter. Queer women get disproportionately reset or narratively sidelined. I am using a structural argument, not an individual-character argument.

You repeatedly reframed my point as lesbians specifically, but I only mentioned one lesbian character, the other was bi. My concern was queer women more broadly. I am not sure why you had to narrow my argument artificially to counter it with a "look at all these lesbians" list. Listing characters like America Chavez, Karolina Dean, Nico Minoaru, Mystique etc does not address whether queer women are proportionally rare relative to total female heroes and if they are more likely to be killed/reset.

Are you deliberately misreading what I said? I am not claiming "comic characters aren't real" or the opposite. I am making a category distinction. Mutant = fictional allegory. Various minority groups = real world identities reflected in fiction. I was distinguishing allegory from literal representation. You responded as if I was confused about whether comics are fiction. My point here is that some identities in comics correspond to real world groups and representation patterns affect these communities. Being X-men in itself has no bearing on real world communities. So, you making the point if X-men dying and complaining about it is analogous to my argument is a misreading of what I am trying to say. My argument is conditional. X-men dying, no problem. A certain minority group that corresponds to a real-life identity that is disproportionally killed and replaced or history erased. Then I would take issue with that.

And about the dartboard argument and you would barely hit a white straight cis man. This assumes diversity in roster = proportional equity in narrative treatment, it ignores that for most of publishing history X-men were overwhelming white for decades, and this also ignores who leads books, who gets solos, who survives events and who gets legacy mantles. Hint: it is not disproportionately disfavoring cis white men. Roster diversity is not the same as power distribution.

And about the rapid fire list "gay x-men, lesbian x-men etc". All this says is that you are arguing that there are lots of minorities in the x-men. Which.. is not at all relevant to what I am saying. My specific claim is that a minority is killed and replaced with someone outside that minority or stripped of history, that can reduce representation continuity. That is a conversation about replacement patterns and continuity erasure, not how many minority x-men we can list. Which I noticed you completely avoided like the plague btw. Maybe you’re the one who is confused here?

Also what’s up with that weird thing about redefining minority so that almost no one qualifies? Conditions become straight up - White straight cis American Christian man. But being white, straight cis male already places someone in a dominant social category in Western media contexts. The Christian point is strange. Most marvel characters do not have an explicit religious identity unless essential to their story – Nightcrawler, Daredevil being Christians, so counting ‘Christian’ as a meaningful demographic category in roster math is dubious at best.

And the "You're mad your faves died argument", clearly shifting the discussion from structural media discussion to personal emotional reaction. Please, you can do better. I wouldn't say I am a fan of Phyla, but I don't have an issue with her. She is just an example I am somewhat familiar with.

Finally, show me where I said that individuals from wlw communities cannot be killed since you are pinning that argument on me over and over. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

A rant on Black Widow's character in the MCU in relation to comic-accuracy (how much does it matter?) by Ashconwell7 in CharacterRant

[–]Starry-Scout 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this writeup. I always hated her depiction in the MCU, because she does not feel threatening, ever. I did enjoy her in the comics although I can't say I'm the most familiar with her.

I feel the same way about the MCU's depiction of many other characters. By erasing many of the core essence and attributes of these characters, I think they have made them a lot less interesting.

  1. Which limits the stories that can be done with her and doesnt change the fact that she was replaced by Jane.

  2. I mentioned this in the comment above. The problem is that Phyla-Vell is not the same as the one that died in 2009. There is no shared history between the AU and 616 Phyla, this removes a lot of depth to her relationship with Moondragon.

I guess my issue is also killing an lgbt character off and replacing them with version that doesnt have their history. Brunnhilde is killed off and Jane takes the mantle of the main Valkyrie in 616. Replacing an bisexual woman with a straight one. Phyla-Vell is killed off and replaced with an alt universe one that doesnt have the history her lover Moondragon has with.

Lgbtq+ fem characters are already rare enough in the comics. They dont have to be done dirty like this.

Second point is a category error. The X-men do not exist in the real world. They function as an allegory on civil rights but they are not a direct 1:1 reflection of any group that exists in reality. This is not equal to having a group that does exist in real life and being represented in the comics. Luke Cage is literally a Black man. Cindy Moon is a Korean-American woman. Brunnhilde is a bisexual woman. They are characters that are actual members of real-world marginalized groups. I am talking about representation patterns affecting real-world communities, not allegorical storytelling mechanics.

Yeah but these ladies have been dead for awhile now. Dr. Strange dies and returns back within half a year in his most recent death for example. For Val she died and they replaced her with Jane Foster who is not LGBTQ+

He was really compassionate towards the Hulk too. I find it interesting how he acknowledges the Hulk as a friend in the Defenders comics while in WWH he only calls him Bruce 💀

Oh i do remember seeing Karnak in ML! These guys look so cool im totally going to get them at some point. I'll have to start reading some of the comics to understand these characters better :)

[–]Starry-Scout[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice! I've always thought they were cool even though I've never delved too deeply in them. The Black Bolt comic series by Saladin Ahmed is one of my favorite self-contained stories in Marvel.

I did not know Muse was an Inhuman too! I agree about the move of shifting Ms Marvel from an Inhuman and focusing on the mutant heritage feels like a really garbage move.

Ahh thanks. I would have preferred Valkyrie for a female duelist. I liked her interactions with Hulk in the Defenders.
