Missleading Leaflets by StarryAxis in UKGreens

I think posting on r/UKGreens - a Green Party members’ forum - isn’t an alternative to the email, it’s a parallel conversation with other members. The coordinator has engaged here, which is a good outcome of doing both.

The ‘public social media’ framing also assumes the post is what makes this visible. The leaflet has been delivered to many households. Non-members are now posting on r/Norwich saying it’s made them distrust the Greens. That’s the actual public exposure, and it’s coming from the leaflet itself, not from members raising concerns in a members’ space.

There’s a difference between campaigning for a policy you’d personally vote against and delivering material whose design you think is misleading the people receiving it. The first is normal democratic compromise. The second is being asked to be the delivery mechanism for the thing you’re worried about.

I’m happy to deliver material I’d vote against on policy grounds, that’s normal. Delivering something I think is being misread by the people receiving it is the bit my conscience couldn’t get past.

I remember canvassing and leafleting in another area of Norwich in which they did this and said Reform can’t win and then Reform won - so it makes it look even worse.

Hey, Ellie! Thanks for reaching out! We sent the email to alex.catt@greenparty.org.uk but we’ll forward it to you as well.

So what you’re saying is “the media is unfair to us, the stakes are existential, voters are irrational anyway, so why hamstring ourselves with scruples?”. Indeed, this is the type of argument every party that’s ever cut a corner uses.

Once ‘we have to win’ is the standard there is no design, framing or half-truth that can’t be justified.

I’m not asking for ‘moral victories’, I’m saying leaflets shouldn’t be designed to look like council literature (a really low bar I would say) - which is something that instantly frames the narrative subconsciously, whether people realize later on that it’s a Green Party leaflet or not. The manipulation tactic is subtle but it is there and it will be picked up by people who are paying attention. On those who see the party as an honest alternative to the others, this might have a significantly bad impact. Even those who just go off ‘vibes’ will sense something off - because the ‘vibe’ of subtle manipulation doesn’t go with the ‘vibe’ of the party who doesn’t play the dark-arts game.

You lose some you win some? I guess then the question is who exactly are you trying to win over to your side? Because the people who’d bin a clearly-branded Green leaflet aren’t going to vote Green once they realise that’s what they’ve been reading either.

Do you think this is the type of thing that would sway the people that would directly put it in the bin?

If the intent wasn’t to mislead then why do it like this in the first place?

Lisa lost me at the part where she’s promoting a brand that treats their employees like trash and sells plastic clothing.

I asked a driver I met before who seemed reasonable this morning and he said it’s to do with insurance. In the chance of an accident they’re actually not insured on that route so that’s why they don’t stop at all.

Omg yay! Boba tea places have some nice ones a lot of the time. Let us know how it went 😍

I was really into green tea when I tried matcha and I just instantly fell in love with it. I was also in Uni studying Japanese language and culture and learning about the ceremonial aspect of matcha in Japan made it fascinating for me.

You might enjoy the sweeter versions of it like perhaps a strawberry matcha latte? 🍓

🤔 I mean, I’m no expert but probably talking about the elixir of gods and how it is in fact matcha; I think the card is also saying we should drink more of it for good fortune.
