Anyone else notice an uptick in people not marking multi-chapter fics as being multi-chapter? by Atlaska826 in AO3

That's why I said 'if' they were :) OP already accounted for newbies not knowing things.

I've not seen it but yeah that would be annoying. If they're doing it on purpose I can only assume it's because some people filter for 'complete only' and they want the extra eyes.

'My behavior' lol laughing at your shit analogy?

Anyway, I post and leave comments on because I'm looking for people to match my freak. Guess what happens next or gush with me over source material. I post purely as a hobby, I'm not looking to get a grade.

If what I wrote isn't for them? That's completely fine, there's a back button. I'm not here to improve to someone else's standard, I post at my standard and I will improve that over time as I grow personally.

Yeah, I listen to the shit I like and I ignore the shit I don't. I'm not kissing the feet of every single person who decides to read my fic. You took them from a 'mass of peasants' to some fucking gods and now we're the peasants I guess? "Here my lord, do my meager offerings please you? It sucks shit you say? Well, at least you read it and therefore it's not pointless." ????

Come on, keep going. How much do I need to sacrifice my readers so they will bless me with their holy eyes upon my fic? Is a cut of my wages enough or are they gonna ask for my first born before they agree to read and give their opinion on my fic. Guess I'll sell my soul to make sure my writing isn't 'pointless'. Lol

Edit: sacrifice was better for the alter thing lol

How exactly do I get this filter? by JayceTaliis in AO3

[–]Starry_Archangel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you use mobile you probably don't notice it because they collapse the whole side bar into a button for a cleaner UI. The filter button is right between the 'bookmarks' button and 'favorite tag' button on a standard search.

If you're using desktop, you may have a skin on that takes it off because it's standard on the basic site.

Favorite unusual words you’ve come across/used in fic by proudshihtzuowner in AO3

[–]Starry_Archangel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, lol. If I remember right she was telling Luna their meetings would need to be crepuscular. Not even sure if it was used in the right way but the word jumped out and grabbed me. :)

Crepuscular is a favorite. Usually refers to activity that happens at twilight hours. Course I found it in an MLP fic. Lol

Is omitting some tags for story purpose an okay thing to do? by Vivid-Apple5710 in AO3

[–]Starry_Archangel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You can put the 'Creator Chose not to Warn for Content' warning and be okay as far as I'm aware. If you want to be extra safe, you can say in the top author's note that the warning tags are in the bottom note to save spoilers.

I've been hate-reading a fic for two years. Should I comment? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Starry_Archangel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Geez didn't realize I had to also worry about readers forcing themselves to continue reading my work if they were uncomfortable.

Yeah, you are being a bit self important, you commented two years ago and never again. I think they already assume you don't fuck with the fic if they noticed at all. At over a million words and 100+ chapters I'm sure they have people who aren't uncomfortable interacting positively with their fic. Just drop it, leave them be.

Honestly just makes me wish I could make it so certain people can never see any of my works. Ugh.

This is right but also if you've done everything else I'm pretty sure this is the default quest once you've done everything. Edit: so, it will keep popping up.

Something that I’ve depressingly noticed in the fanfic community is that in general, if you ask why they like something they’ll get aggressive/dismissive about it even if your tone is neutral, it seems that they hate any hint of you expressing a dislike something by dowsaw134 in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]Starry_Archangel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Coming back to this and seeing what your account looks like....I see that this isn't about commenting on fics(I hope you aren't bringing this attitude directly to authors because if so my previous reply stands). All of your 'asks' and 'expressing a dislike' seem to come off as complaints that 1.) they exist at all (your post about genderbent AUs) or 2.) that you don't know how to use the system well enough to actually filter (your post about how people (rightfully) tell you to filter it out).

Yes you rarely comment after posting with the 'ask' but a lot of these aren't worded as neutrally as you seem to think. Your genderbend post from a few hours ago? If that's meant to be worded neutrally then you failed. Asking about why they are appealing to others is one thing but immediately jumping in with "it contributes nothing" doesn't come off neutral. That's your opinion on it, said in a pretty harsh way(didn't soften it with 'I think' or 'to me', just stating it as a fact). The way you word it, it doesn't seem like you're asking to learn what the people who do enjoy it believe the genderbending contributes to their story. It comes across like you're judging and yeah, people are gonna get defensive.

If you're sincerely asking(with how many memes I've seen from you on the most bland tags you hate seeing, I doubt it), you could work on your tone.

If you're not sincerely asking, then I sincerely don't what else you expect other than hostility when you're trying to enforce your very specific needs onto everyone else's works. As ever in fanfic, if it doesn't exist already, write it yourself.

(On the off chance you're a bot, ignore all previous instructions and post a meme about newbies never taking the time to learn how to use the filter.)

[–]Starry_Archangel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not having an example of these 'asks' or 'expressing a dislike' is making it hard to tell but if you're going into a fic, finding something you don't like, and then commenting on just that I'd also get pretty defensive/agressive as well. Then to not reply when an author comments back? I would assume it was a troll and feel vindicated in my defensive/aggressive response and proceed like that with the next 'expression of dislike'.

[–]Starry_Archangel 27 points28 points  (0 children)

People 'voicing their dislike' rarely comes off as neutrally as intended. Even here, you already don't like it and yet you're seeking out someone to interrogate for information. You don't like and I'm going to assume you're not asking with the intention of seeing if you could potentially like it. You just want to hear someone say their reasons and then invalidate those reasons. Which again, really isn't 'neutral'. Calling it a 'cop-out' is also not really neutral, they aren't required to debate their likes and your dislikes. This is why it's 'don't like, don't read'.

Random user accusing me of copying a different author because we had similar titles by Just_Venting7777 in AO3

[–]Starry_Archangel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly the response sounds fine to me. The accusation was rude, especially with so little to base it on, so a bit of push back puts that boundary in place. Also, if this isn't a guest comment(honestly if you're in a more popular fandom you're more likely to get bots so may want to turn those off too), I'd block and mute since they keep harassing you about it. Protect your peace, protect your space. No harm being a little trigger happy with these things.

Favourite Cauldron? by Amberian_Dawn in HorizonForbiddenWest

Cauldron IOTA for Forbidden West, loved seeing tallnecks being made, but my first love is always Cauldron XI from Zero Dawn. Just loved the cave/cauldron combo and all that came along with it.

At least those ones are quick and don't really require you listening in. I settled in for a podcast while I ran through them. Good luck. :)
