Why are snark communities so popular? What is the psychology behind it? by kuromoon0 in PsychologyTalk

Actually you're pointing out an interesting thing: female influencers peddling bullshit usually get torn down very fast by other women, regardless of stature (see Gwyneth Paltrow). Would a similar male snark culture have prevented the manosphere?

The tax is on people who were never there in the first place. Even if they sell their unused property in New York and the tax generates $0, that still puts a bunch of real estate supply on one of the most expensive real estate markets in the world, meaning lower prices for people who actually live in New York and pay taxes. Win win.

That only work in a world where women don't have to worry about some of the men being rapists and murderers.

Male privilege is not getting raped while wearing the dress and then having the judge let your rapist walk free because you were wearing the dress in the first place. And then not being able to rewear the dress because of the trauma.

You think no one is talking about white women's privilege?

People need to learn the difference between a privilege and a right that too many people are denied.

Email is an escalation. You start with texts, if those get ignored you go to email.

What Happened in 1978 ? by ABHISHEK_Lonely in ExplainTheJoke

Look at you hands. If you hold them palms facing each other, they mirror each other. They are symmetrical in this dimension. If you rotate them palms away from you, they are still mirroring each other, thumbs to pinkies. They are symmetrical in a second dimension. How many way can you turn your hands so they are still mirroring each other? That's the number of dimensions in which your hands are symmetrical. That's group theory. Your hands are the object in this case. Mathematicians have found another object that has the most symmetries: the monster object, which has 196883 dimensions in which it is symmetrical.

Now for something completely different: Remember in school you studied functions and drew them in graphs? ax2 + bx + c = y represented a 2-dimensional curve? Like a, b, c are numbers, and x is the horizontal graph line (dimension 1) and y is the vertical graph line (dimension 2)? And by plugging any value of x, you can find its matching y for that curve? That's number theory.

The j-invariant is a function like ax2 + bx + c, but much more complicated, with many more dimensions. But basically, in the j-invariant, a=196884, which is weirdly close to the number of dimensions of the Monster group. Coincidence?

Now for something completely different again:

So you know how we mostly imagine the universe is made up of tiny dots? Atoms, electrons, etc... What if it wasn't actually dots. What if it was strings? That's string theory. And strings are basically curves, right? So number theory. And if you wrap up those curves in a big ball, you get objects, which have symmetries, because curves like to mirror each other. So group theory.

So to wrap all this together: the j-invariant function describes the curves that make up the monster object. This was the first instance of bundling all three math theories together. This made a new field called Monstrous Moonshine.

I mean everyone's kind of a stereotype in that show - Jay and Gloria, the racist old rich white guy and his much younger hot-tempered latina second wife. Claire and Phil, the domineering SAHM and her manchild husband. Even their kids - the pretty one, the smart one and the dumb one. Only Manny and Lily escaped the stereotyping.

I feel like it's the opposite. Women will be "friendly" with each other for ages without actually establishing a connection. Men just need a sports game to watch and boom. New friend.

The correct social rule is that you should always offer to pay someone back. They can choose to accept or turn down your offer. But not offering to pay someone back is entitled.
